My wife was kind enough to purchase the S&B PMII that the USMC uses for me, so now I need to add it to a new rifle. I have narrowed it down to the GAP's M40A5 (which should naturally be the choice, but..?), the Army M24, and the Crusader keep popping into my mind. Rifle will be used for courses and comps.

I will let you guys select it for me.

I will be making this purchase on 9/5 so please vote until then.

Thanks,

Re: Pick my next rifle!

Would love to help but the one I'd pick isn't on there. I'm sure you'll make the right decision but pricey isn't always the best choice.

Ya got a keep with the wifey, better take care of her.

Definitely keeping her.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I voted for the Crusader I was actually looking at them the other day thinking that its not a bad rifle, and I may still see about getting one in 223 we will see I already own three 308s so I don't think I need anymore.

I have never warmed to the M-24 it's ok seems to shoot alright just not my cup of tea.

The M40A5 I would own one of them they are a nice rifle but I like the Mcm A5 stock more than the A4.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

IF it was my choice, and I was going to use it as a comp gun, I wouldn't choose a 308. So I guess go with a M-24, but have it chambered in 300wm.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I would go with a M40A3. but chose the A5 since the A3 wasnt on your list.

Any reason so that I may choose more wisely?!

Re: Pick my next rifle!

No use to pay custom money and have a factory action. I too would ditch the 308 in favor of one of the 6.5mm offerings.

If I go crusader I would do a 6mm Creedmoor. If I got M40A5 or A3, I'm going full spec.

You pretty much answered your question then. Go custom action and 6mm for the money.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

You already have great glass. Why not just get an AE (or AW or AX if you can afford it) and be done with it. I went the custom route and now regret that decision. Could have had an AE for the same money and had a far better rifle for the money.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

Why not the Savage precision action?

.243 or .260 for standard available rounds, 6 CM or 6 XC for comps. I chose the 7mm-08 with 1-8" twist so I can shoot the heavies.
For any comps though, you will need to reload pretty much.

Also, the Surgeon is a good choice. The integral recoil lug being one of the most important.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I like the Crusader if it's in your budget, but I'd probably go 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 over a .308.

Now that you mention it I will have to check into that.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I picked the Crusader because that was the best of the three there. In reality, it would be none of the above unless these rifles are truly spec'd out exact way you want them. If you're spending that kind of money, don't settle for anything other than how you want it.

Personally, I would get a rifle with the Surgeon action, chambered in 260Rem or 7mm-08. The rest you can build from there depending on your tastes.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

Hell, with a wife like that get ine of each.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I would go with a M24. Here is why i say that. I built a M24 as close to spec as i could...95% minus optics and rings/base and trigger 9i have a 40x trigger on it).

I was doing some shooting today to 1000 yards and i was hitting the target. Granted i probably screwed up on my end but i hit the 1000 yard steel target as well as 450, 550, 750 yard targets and i was having a blast. Granted the 308 is beat by a lot of other rounds, HOWEVER the 308 winchester is extremely popular and it works for what you might need it for and it has a huge database of info about it as well as commercial ammo and if your lucky you can get M118LR the legit stuff. And barrel life is EXCELLENT approx 8000 rounds so cheaper in the long run since you won't be replacing barrels as much as with some other rounds.

This is just my opinion so take it for what it is forth.

Do you really want to use a .308 in competitions against folks running every high-octane cartridge they can get their hands on? 6mm Crusader is an excellent wind-bucking flat shooter that puts you on the same level playing field as your competition.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

Keep in mind that the AI rifles give you the ability to change barrels and/or calibers (within the same case family) in just minutes. Everybody should have one 308, but the 6 & 6.5mmm rounds dominate the comps. With an AI, that is just a barrel change away. Not to mention, with all of other custom options, they are just sporting applications adapted for a specialized use. With an AI, it was built from scratch to be a tough as nails precision rifle second to NONE.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I vote "none of the above"

build yourself a monster 30-338LM and let me know how it works out.

Re: Pick my next rifle!

If you don't go with the full spec M40 build, I'd choose AI or TRG. Customs can be good fun but it takes a lot of planning, choosing, compromising, and waiting. AI and Sako carry a factory warranty, give you some peace of mind, little or no wait, ready to rock out of the box and can still be upgraded after purchase to suit the shooter and in the case of AI, barrel changes are as easy as a savage and AI doesn't bend you over on the pricing of chambered barrels, either(on the AE, at least. AW and AX I believe are much higher)

This would give you the ability to shoot a 308 for practice on the cheap and swap to a match friendly barrel when need be.

Plus the new MkIII skins are gorgeous

Re: Pick my next rifle!

I picked Crusader, but personally, I'd go with a Surgeon action vs the Templar. I have two GAP .308 bolt guns, one with a Surgeon and one with the Templar action. Based on the two samples I have, the Surgeon is a much better action as there is a little wiggle in the Templar and it's a little "sticky". Might be because it's new, but my Surgeon was smoothe on day one.

I've only shot in a few long range matches but have to agree on the .308 not being the best choice for a purpose built competition gun. However, if you plan to use your guns more multipurpose like I do, .308 is the way to go.

Good luck with the new gun, however you decide!
