Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

I just picked up a new .223 700 LTR. Remington LE's web site recommends cleaning the cosmoline off, spraying the parkerized parts until wet, and then drying it with a towel a little while later after it has soaked in.

I initially just lightly oiled the barrel and action with MPro-7 oil while the rifle was still assembled. Since reading their FAQ, I have disassembled it and will clean it thoroughly with MPro-7 cleaner. I'd like to use a spray-on lubricant to get the nooks and crannies in the 'get it wet' part, so my question is:

1. Any problems with using something like RemOil when there may be remnants of MPro-7 on the rifle (mixing lubricants of different chemistries)? I usually use MPro-7 for general lubrication inside and out.

Assembly question:

2. Action screw torque spec: I have seen the 65 in lbs spec listed on the web, but I checked Remington's web page and they state that the rifle comes from the factory torqued to 45 in lbs.

My stock is the standard (H-S Precision) stock that comes with it. Which value to use?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

Just hose it own with wd40 or some other spray as such. Wipe it down.
It will leave a light protective coat.

45 in-lbs.
The 65 in-lbs is for steel bottom metal.
Your rifle, like most factory rem rifles, has an alloy bottom metal. Torque to 65 and you might crack it.

off topic a bit....sorry

I recently won a certificate for the 700P LTR 20" fluted barrel. I have a 700P 26" already set-up that is my competition gun.(8 year old rifle)

I am trying to decide if I want to keep the new gun or not. Can you post some good pics of the rifle. Especially the stock. Thanks. The LE sites states the stock is "slimmed down".

Here's the HS that was on mine originally.

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

OK, one last question. I finished the first clean and lube and noticed some strange 'stains' on the action. I tried using some MPro-7 and a nylon brush, and also some RemOil and a nylon brush, but this stuff wouldn't come out.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm wondering what it is, and if it has affected the integrity of the Parkerizing. I realize the rail will cover the top portion, but I'd like to feel confident that it has proper corrosion protection.

Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

Well, I contacted Remington. When I got some oil on it, it was really noticeable. It didn't seem to retain oil as well in the affected areas either. I wonder if the metal was contaminated before the Parkerizing process...

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

Have you tried taking the little screws out of the d&t'd scope mounting holes? If not, they are keeping the contamination in the holes from being removed and wicking same to the surface.

Take the screws out and flush the holes with cleaner. Then the stains should go away.

Looks like they didnt dry it properly when it came out of the parkerizing. You could get it reparked locally if someone does parking close to you.If you send it back to Rem it could take a while.I had my LTR reparked for $30.Hope this helps

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

I contacted Remington, and it's going back to the mother ship. I'll post the results when it's back to me.

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

I've had something similar happen when parkerizing.
Before you send it back, give this a try:
0000 steel wool and a little oil (doesn't matter what kind), and buff that area. If the discoloration is just on the surface, it will come right off.

Re: Couple of questions about new 700 LTR

Just a quick update. The LTR came back from Remington refinished. Not really much explanation on the work order, just a receiver that looks like it should. It took about 2 weeks after delivery to them. I'm happy with the results.
