Search Fu shows very little on this damn Caliber, so here we go.

Buddy wants me to load his .340 Weatherby soonest. Looking at the .338 Barnes TTSX in either 225gr or 250gr. Would very much like to stay with RL22. He's got a Weatherby Mark V w/26in Barrel and Zeiss glass w/Rapid Z 800 reticle. Been loading a couple .300 Mags and 7MM's with the rapid Z 800 and been able to match bullet weight/velocity pretty close to the Zeiss Calculator w/RL22.

Having said all that, any experience out there or suggestions on this combo? Gotta make that order, rifle season on the way

Suppose I should add that he wants to shoot everything from Blacktail Deer, Muleys, Roosevelt/Rocky Mtn Elk, and just plain fun to around 1200yds with us. Your wisdom appreciated.

85-86 grains of RL22 will get you 3000 and a bit with the 225 bullet, but you'll have a bit of compression of the powder and low pressures. That cartridge, even with the big case has a high expansion ratio. Probably better with the 250 and RL22 at the same charge weights to build pressure. You should get 2900 and a bit with the 250. Be sure to use a Magnum primer in that case and in cold weather.

i reload for my son he shoots a 340 weby mag he uses the 225 gr nosler partition with 88 gr of 7828 we chronoed them at 3073 fps. this is a compressed load but boy does it shoot he has shot under 1/2 inch all day long. we tried r 22 all the way up to 86.5 gr with the 225 gr barnes txs but they wouldnt do better than 1 1/2 inch at 100 yds good luck they are a beast to shoot stand well back lots of muzzel flash

Not looking forward to getting this going cause I'm not a fan of the 340 Wallop. Guess a 250gr pill will be the ticket, he wants heavy so so be it. Damn I hate this caliber:)

For a 250gr bullet are we looking at a crushed/compressed load any way we look at it with pretty much any powder? 2900 fps range would be ideal. His wish is to go with either a polymer bullet or hollow point. Unfortunately he's a couple hours away and I'll be the whipping post to shoot the damn thing. Oh well, he's a good friend, for now. Thanks again for the input.

I agree with the wallop. Especially in a hunting weight gun. Mag-Na-Porting helps with the muzzle rise without the severe blast of a full blown muzzle brake. The one I had (briefly) erased my short term memory. While we are on that subject, I have seen two .378 Weatherbys in the used gun rack. Both had a box of shells with 3 missing. Story was the same on each...Bubba and Joe went out to shoot Bubba's new deer rifle. Bubba fired twice, gave it to Joe, who with twice the IQ shot once. Back to the gunshop they went.

LMAO. So true. This will fill in the blank. The guy I'm doing this for is a Logger. Not stereotyping, just saying, this boy "runs" a logging show with his father and is no stranger to pain and punishment. Unfortunaley lost an eye a few years back while felling trees and got whacked in the brain box, top fell out and had his number. I'd put money on him for one round with Mike Tyson (now), hence that's the name I've taped to his stock.

Back to business. 225 or 250 grain bullets are what he wants. Recipe's welcome. Not stuck on RL22 at this time. Just looking for a decent load for this thing. Don't wanna screw up and buy something that's not in the mix, too damn much money for this thing. Just don't wanna have a whoops factor pop up. Thanks again.
