Fellas,

This week I'll be ordering a rifle I've only dreamed of in the past, an AE MKIII 2.0 .308. I've decided on a 24" tube, but I'm torn on the muzzle break. One of my questions is, is it worth the extra 200 bucks?

Another question, will I be able to shoot with the brake on without having ringing ears for 3 weeks? I try to always use earpro, but I'm not 100% by any means.

Also, any other wise words of advice for a guy getting ready to join the AI club?

Thanks for any help

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

I've got an AI brake on my AW, and to be honest there's not much of a recoil or noise difference between the AW and my AICS equipped 5R with no brake - but the AW does stay on target a little better.

I had one installed on my 24" AI & I really like it as it keeps you on target to see your impacts. Plus, after a day of shooting hundreds of rounds w/o a brake your shoulder will be sore.

Some guys don't care but, I do as, I train in the gym 5 days a week and it would take away from the productivity of my weight training to have an aching shoulder.

As the old saying go's - it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

Thanks guys. Avsfan, how does it sound without earpro on?

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

IMO, I'd prefer to either get an unthreaded AI and have someone cut threads/install an aftermarket brake. More choices for much better brakes out there, the ability to add a QD suppressor, and the option of choosing the thread pitch you want.

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

My AW 260 came with the SAS QD suppressor brake and I went ahead and took it off. Loud enough with ear-pro it would make my ears ring for a couple days.

Honestly, I've never fired any of my guns w/o hearing protection or eye protection for that matter...so, I can't answer. However, there's practically no concussion and a mild bark when it go's off. Sounds as loud as my M4 Carbine AR's with ears (if that helps)

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

OP- I made the mistake of shooting my AW (26" barrel, AI brake) without hearing protection once on a covered firing point (open at the sides but with a tin roof).

My ears were ringing for around 30 minutes - and I was aware of top-end loss for at least a day.

Not something I'm in a hurry to repeat.

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

Thanks for the help guys, I think ill go with the naked muzzle.

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

Man I will say there is plenty of threads about is a brake worth. I will say if it is at ALL something you think you might want on your gun do it from the factory. You will end up paying more then $200 to have a gunsmith do it once you calculate shipping both ways and the threading of the barrel and purchasing a brake. I would say get it from the factory. After threading my SPS i regret not just buying an AAC edition but that is just my 2 cents. Do brakes make a difference I def do. Like already stated they will help with recoil no matter the round and best of all they help keep you on target for spotting your impacts and helping with quicker 2nd shots if needed.

Re: Accuracy International Muzzle Brakes

I'd agree, If you're going with an AI barrel, go with the threaded barrel and the threaded "tactical brake" - keeps the options open if you want to add an AI suppressor later or just want too use a thread protector and go "naked".
