Savage Receiver Thread Problem

As I was mounting my EGW 20MOA base on my new Savage 10FCP-K .308 I noticed the forward most torx screw was giving a lot of resistance when I first tried to thread it. I tried to be careful not to cross thread it but I gave it a few turns before I pulled it out and noticed I cross threaded it about 3 threads deep. I think the threads in the action were gummed up or somethng. What are my options here? I don't have any extra torx screws of that size. Are they readily available, and what size are they? Do I need a smith to tap the threads on the receiver? I just got back from a deployment and I am pretty anxious to go shoot this thing.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Savage Receiver Thread Problem

You might check with your local gunsmith. He should have the screws and should be able to clean out the threads.

Re: Savage Receiver Thread Problem

Savage uses 6-48 threads. Get a tap and chase the threads. I think it would be best to contact EGW for the screw so you know it has the right size head and length.

Re: Savage Receiver Thread Problem

You can buy the Torx screws from EGW, but I'd contact them first to see if they'll replace them for you. Avoid using other screws because EGW base holes and screws have an angled countersink to keep the base from shifting under recoil.
