is it possible to use a bore mop saturated with lapping compound to polish or lap a bore?

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

Sounds like zero control...u would just be rounding everything without any control. Does not sound very precision to me.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

you probably ought to step away from removing anything from your rifle right now, especially metal

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

Gappa, first your scopes then now this. I'm convinced you have more money than sense.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

As the others have stated it wouldn't produce guality results. When I lap barrels a lead lap is poured directly in the bore and the lap is then loaded with the correct abbrasive, by doing this you will not cause wear in the wrong areas.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

I wouldn't. Pouring a lead lap may not be much fun, but it will get results.

There are tons of info on the net about do-it-yourself-lapping should you decide to do so.

Good luck.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

I did do this to an old LTR I used to have. That rifle was incredibly accurate.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

so if you already did it, why the hell are you asking us if you can? You probably need to recut the crown too.....hand drill and a screw and some lapping compound.

No I'm asking what would happen or what does happen inside the bore

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

what does an abrasive compound do to metal?

There is your answer

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

Gappa you are a 100% good to go. I used a similar idea to this on my GAP barrel awhile back. Fucker shoots lights out!

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

You should post great ideas like this in the gunsmithing section.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

Lap it by shooting bullets through it....way funner than all that other stuff.

You obviously cannot sense sarcasm

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

I do this but I dont use a barrel mop, I welded a steel dowel rod onto my drill and get that baby humming lapping the shit out of my barrel

Re: can I lap a barrel? (YES, WITH NECO FIRE LAP)

Buy a NECO Fire Lapping kit and follow the instructions exactly, ESPECIALLY for cleaning. Be sure to use a bore guide for your (one-piece) cleaning rod, as I hope you have been doing all along.

Of course this advice presuppoees that you handload. If not, get a handloading friend to load your grit imbedded bullets.

Re: can I lap a barrel? (YES, WITH NECO FIRE LAP)

Just dip your live rounds into the valve-lapping compound that you get from Auto-World (or wherever) and shoot them off.

This way, you'll be killing three birds with one stone. A) you get to 'lap' your barrel, 2- you get practice in, and another reason is to save money doing so.

Isn't it great to pioneer a new and uncharted method that could quite well lead the way for a whole industry of idiots who just didn't have the sense enough to figure these things out on their own? You're near 'messiah' potential.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

ok well I just did this with my SPS last night and the thing is driving tacks. After doing this it seems much more consistent.
I just got back in and it was shooting under 1/2" all day long.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

But the question remains...... Did you do YOUR part? If one of your interest is gunsmithing, would that not require you to know this stuff? When you go to the range do people start packing up and leaving?

come on that was supposed to be a funny..

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

Don't worry, we are STILL LAUGHING!

At you, not WITH you.

If that LTR shoots that well now.....I bet it was one of them .20-.25 rare weapons before.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

I highly doubt that.. I only made a pass or two with the mop so I didn't actually remove any metal! I just cleaned and gave a nice polished surface to the lands and grooves.

I'm guessing you actually don't have a clue as to what you did.

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

no I don't!! but it seemed to have good results on my old LTR and it seems to have had excellent results on my new 308 as well. For a factory rifle I am thrilled by it's performance! I can't ask for any better than a consistent sub 1/2" rifle!
That's why I posted.. to see if anyone could give me a clue as to what I may be doing.

^This!

What type of lead?
How do you pour it?
What type of lapping compound?
How many strokes?
Do you rotate the lap for each groove?
If so, how many times?
How did a clean, dry patch feel before?
How does the lap feel when you start?
How does the lap feel when you are finished?
How does a clean dry patch feel after?

There is a lot more to it than it seems.

"When you think it is perfect, just move the decimal point and get back to work!"

Since this was not a barrel blank, what did lapping do to the throat and the crown?

Re: can I lap a barrel with a bore mop?

I don't think I actually "lapped" the barrel, I just cleaned it and gave a little shine to the inside of the bore.

LOL You might want to notice that your talking to Brutas.....considering he works for what is considered the best barrel company in the biz....you might want re read what he just said.

Seriously, especially the part about the throat and crown. BTW, you can not polish anything, without removing material. And since you did it with a mop, instead of a well fitted slug, what you probably removed was the top corner of the groves.

I am not a barrel-maker, nor a gun-smith, just a welder that has polished many a thing...with a grinder. Basically what you just did. Just had a finer grit.

I donn't think I'd go that far....might get your nose covered in feces. I would consider them one of the top precision barrel manufacturers but not the "best".

When I take my monthly bath with a wire brush and some lye I don't think I really 'remove' any dead skin, 'I just clean up what I already had'!!!

Kidding, but seriously, Google.

I don't know about the OP's lapping, but when I got my barrel back from Krieger I ran a dry patch through it and damned near got wood.
