I purchased this stripped Upper, Lower, and forward Tube from RWSgunsmith and I have nothing but good things to say about Robert. Stand up guy to deal with.

Now for the build. This is a full on custom build. Very heavy duty. It was machined by Progressive Arms and the model name is Firebird. The upper and lower appear to be 7075 alum and the tube is stamped 6061 alum. Both are of course still in raw form, but I'll be duracoating or anodizing it here in the near future. Not sure yet what colors I'm going to do.

The only thing I'm totally undecisive on is which caliber to go with. For now I just throwed a 20" RRA heavy barrel .223 in it for looks. I don't want the same old .223/556. I fill this is a unique platform so I should go with someting different. I've narrowed it down, I believe, to either the 6.5 Grendal or 300 Blackout with suppressor. The AAC suppressor I have fits perfect in the tube with about 1/4" play, all around, to spare. I will be machining cooling holes in the tube for looks and keeping the suppressor/barrel cool. I'm curious to here opinions.

Ok folks it is now all done. Every piece on this weapon was bought off here, The Hide. I'm talking everything down to the swivel stud for the Harris.

Here's the list:
-Progressive Arms Upper and Lower. Model: Firebird
-Custom machined 20" front tube
-JP SS 25 1/2" 6.5 Grendal Barrel
-Cedar Enterprise 2 stage trigger
-Nickel Boron BCG w/RRA 6.5G bolt face
-BCM charging handle with Badger extended latch
-PRS Stock
-Ergo Grip
-Harris Bi-Pod
-Vortex Razor 5-20x50 EBR-3
-V-TAC rings
-Atlas Mono-Pod
-Gun metal grey Hard Anodize

I bead blasted the upper, lower, and front tube before having it anodized to try and resemble the raw alu look. I think its close to the look I wanted. I did blast the front tube 1st with some alu media, followed by the glass bead. This gave it just enough texture for gripping. The shade is a little off from the upper/lower, but it's close enough.

I machined the holes in the forward tube for heat purposes, and weight reduction. Trust me, every ounce off this tank is a plus. Basically just started at the 12 o'clock position with 3/4" holes and worked my way around swapping over to 1/2" holes on every other position. It off sets it to me. Makes it look like a shroud off an old WW2 gun. I then Painted the leading edges on both ends of the tube with matte black duracoat. This brakes up the long 20" tube, and believe it or not, gives the effect of a shorter tube.

I haven't shot it yet, so that will be on the weekend agenda. I did just get my dies and and reloading components, so i'll now load the ammo and have it ready for the weekend.

Thanks to all for all the input, feelings, concerns, and etc. I beleive I made the right choose.

Re: The new Project

5.56, 1:8" 24" heavy varmint weight barrel. That's the config on my Stag model 6 Super Varminter, and it's one helluva shooter at 250yd with 75gr factory match ammo. It's definitely sub 1MOA out there with it, and I don't think I've gotten anywhere near its full potential with handloads.

I haven't tried this in the Model 6 yet, but it shot lights out in a 24" 1:9" Savage 10FP some time back.

Looking at the optics and solid meat on that platform, I think the long, heavy barrel route would be right there in sync.

Re: The new Project

Very nice! I have both the grendel & blkout, & love them both. But i think i would put a nice grendel barrel in that nice piece of work! The grendel is very nuce suppressed! Good luck with your build & keep us up with how it turns out.

Re: The new Project

Thanks for the compliments guys, Greg I'm going to look into that. That would be badass.

Re: The new Project

I looked at that upper/lower set when it was for sale too - waaaay over-built, just the way I like things. I'd go 6.5. When you get everything up and running I'd be real interested in a range report!

Re: The new Project

The Black Chrome is something that's been holding my attention for some years now, ever since I saw some custom wheel rims done up with it. Still looking for the right application with my own rifles.

Re: The new Project

Id polish it before I chromed it. The chrome is thicker and a pain to remove or coat over if you decided to change the finish. I'd personally polish it. it's simple cheap and if you decided to change its not hard.

DUI I agree, in that it would look good polished, but the problem with that is, I just found out alum is soft and if you leave the it original in raw form then any little ding, scratch, etc would be present all the time. A hard coat of some sort has to be applied to it to act, not only as a shield, but also as a sealer. Alum oxides at a rapid rate, i'd literally have to polish on it everyday. Not to mention the burnt gun powder, oil, carbon and everything else would stain into the alum and look like hammered damn it. I could, and this may be what you meant to say, polish it and have some sort of clear hard coat added to it, if it exist. I still haven't decided.

Re: The new Project

According to my google-fu there's nothing you can put over it tht doesn't reduce the shine. I have high polished aluminum wheels that stay perfect for about 3 days and decent at 1 week (outside 24/7). It may last longer then you think. But, it would suck if it doesn't.
How about a acid wash annodizing in matte?

There you go. You may be onto something there.

Re: The new Project

How about IonBond? Should be very durable, though admittedly less flashy than some other options. Their Diamond black would give it a more mean stealth look.

My vote is 6.5, because it screams long range to me ... But 300 blackout, suppressed Is an interesting option. Ultimately depends on what you prefer doing.

Will be fun to see where this goes. Thanks for sharing.

Re: The new Project

Alright 6.5G it is. Just bought the barrel in FS section. Should be here end of the week. I'm fixing to break it all down and send off for the mystery coating.

To be continued....................................

Re: The new Project

Good choice with 6.5, it's a hell of a round. That forend is interesting though, can't decide if I like it or not. Definitely unique though. Good luck with the build, can't wait to see it finished.

Re: The new Project

Wow that looks amazing cannot wait to see how it shoots.

Re: The new Project

Sweet Rig! I am a fan of the 6.5 Grendel, nice work.

Re: The new Project

You made quick work of that custom build. Nice job. Looking forward to hearing how it shoots.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: The new Project

Thanks for the compliments. I did get to shoot it today and all was great. I'll get some pics up later. I will say this, with a little load work I can have same hole accuracy at 100 yards, I believe.

I shot hornady 123's match ammo and got clover leafs all day.
