I'm currently looking for the most accurate long range .308 ar type rifle out to 700 yds or longer. I'm looking into Les Baer and Noveske. What do ya'll think? Any other suggestions?? Thanks guys!

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

GAP 10
Larue OBR
JP LR308

Take your pick... for my money I'd be on GAP's waiting list or pick up the one in the For Sale section.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

If you want accuracy, go with LaRue OBR, Les Baer Monolithic Swat 308,or FD Defense 308. All are super tight. I'venever ran a GAP10 but I know Hide members love them, I'm sure they can hang with the best. Don't get a LWRC or a Knight's SR25.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I haven't heard much about the Les Baer semi-auto 308. The only info I have found other than the manufacturer's was a magazine article or two. I have heard that post sale customer service can be ...well, challenging at times.

Does anyone have any experience with these rifles, or just have any more info about them compared to the rifles mentioned above (Knights, JP, Gap, Larue, DPMS).

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

GAP10 all the way. They build the best bolt guns and the GAP10 is killer as well.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I can't give feedback on a Les Bear as it is the only one mentioned I haven't shot. Lots of awesome choices here, I agree with several of the above choices but my choices in order would be.

1. LMT or GAP tied for first
3. Larue OBR

All four of these perform better than 95% of the shooters who will ever touch them!

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

( JP LRP-07 )- ( GAP-10 ) I have shot both but only own JP for now. But Les Baer is top notch, I have their 1911 SRP, very very accurate.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I have a Noveske N6 and a DPMS LR 308, opposite ends of the financial spectrum, The DPMS shoots a tad better, it does have a 6" longer barrel and no brake though...

Aloha

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I completely agree, and when I read that yesterday evening I almost ask dude where I could get me one of those 417s or a MK11s, as I haven't seen them at my local fun shops. I didn't have the balls to be the first jerk:)

A few MK11s have gotten out into the civilian wild, however in terms of a 417....certainly haven't seen one in U.S. civi hands.

I have a Les Baer .308 Monolith with braked 18" barrel. The rifle IS a tack driver that will shot .5MOA or better all day long. All major parts, including barrel, are made by Les and the machining and so forth are absolutely top notch.

That's the good news. Service is occasionally challenging particularly if you see things a bit differently than he/they do.

In addition the chambers/barrel are match spec and tight: I've had to be careful about what I feed it.

Disclosure: Les is an old friend who'se built me competition weapons for more than 20 yrs. That said I have other weapons (and have a Chad Dixon and a GAP coming) and so am not a shill.

Many of the others mentioned are also excellent. There's actually a nice set of choices in the .308 (or other) world.

Good luck.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

The Baer will shoot amazingly well. I have had zero problems with CS. They are very nice and I have dealt with them for years. Good people, great guns.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I also have a Les Baer Monolith. Its shoots great ( same as the OBR we had out there also). Here is something that they wont tell you before buying: The barrels are red lock tighted in place before the barrel nut is put on. Their brakes are also red lock tighted into place making this weapon not user friendly if you ever want to change brakes or shorten the barrel. You could try to call LB and tell them that you want to use another mfg. brake... See how that conversation goes.

So basically if you want to change anything, you are going to have to put a heat gun to it. I was going to take my 20" barrel down to 18" with a SF brake, but said screw it when I saw that the barrel was still fused in place without the barrel nut. BTW: the MEGA barrel nut wrench works perfectly.

....I still cant believe they red lock tight a barrel in....

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I have a DPMS SASS and I can hit clays at 600 when ever I want. I can ring the 1000 plate at TVP 7 out of 10 times.

I think the rifle will shoot as good as its operator. and I really don't think that I could shoot any other semi auto gun any better. Plus I don't think I should expect much more from it..

Killshot, Can you put a Ogre with a war hammer in your animation? I don't think anyone got the hit to SEARCH FRIST!!!

Yes, but it could be my upper lip.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

Well, if I had the money my list would probably be GAP JP POF OBR. Maybe in that order maybe not depending on wait times. They are all good.

edit: TBH anything with a decent barrel that is free-floated as well as a decent trigger and good ammunition will be a shooter and more accurate than you. Very very few people can consistently shoot these rifles to their potential.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

speeddog, it sounds like you have one bad ass rifle. check out this posting and get us a 6group, 5shot, 30round target. I've been waiting for someone to fill the .5moa all day long crown for almost a month now. I'm looking forward to it.

Awesome Elfster. So funny how everyone says the .5MOA all day long line. Lets see what that Les Baer has got.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

hell, i was being serious.... i mean, if he said it can do it, then it's got to be true..... the shootout gives you one full day to finish an entry so this shouldn't be a problem just as long as you follow the OP rules. right? could really use a Les Baer on the list, or possible .5moa all day long crown title. Rock it out my brother.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

If I wanted a precision AR10 for long range target shooting built on a Mega platform, who does those in house, aside from Rainier Arms?

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

About the shout out. I'm not trying to be a jerk or a poseur. I haven't posted pictures in my posts because I've not taken the time to learn how. I have a group I shot last yr on my phone. Tell me how to post it and I will. I can find some others as well.

My point wasn't that I was cool but rather that the rifle can do this. The factory target is 10 rounds at 100 shot from front and rear bags and I can post mine.

As an aside I alluded to one of my issues with the very tight chamber and barrel. I have to be careful what I feed it. Perhaps great for a target rifle but much less ideal for more "practical circumstances (which I don't have to face).

Look in the mirror.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

nobody said POF yet? 5r barrels and tits trigger? GAP10 is built on POF parts but DI gas. These two along with the larue are in my opinion the top three accurate AR10s. all 1/2 MOA with factory match.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

Most rifles will out shoot their shooters. Any high end .308 AR with good glass/rings/stable platform will shoot great at the ranges you are talking about.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

Personally I think you can't go wrong with any of the top brand AR manufacturers.....chances are you will never shoot as good as the gun can perform. Pick the best one you like that fits your budget

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

If your willing to wait I'm guessing Noveske will be releasing their Gen 2 N6 here in a few months...should be one hell of a rifle.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I have a Les Baer .308 sniper rifle with a 20-inch barrel. I'm not aware that Les uses any muzzle brake other than the Enforcer that is electrical discharge machined (EDM) into the barrel itself. So a thread-on brake would be a special order at this point. I would estimate the Enforcer brake reduces the recoil to a little less than my 6mm Ruger #1.

However, if you wanted to put a supressor on the rifle, I'm sure the barrel configuration could be worked out with Les. The barrel is made by Les Baer and in the Sniper rifle is equal to a Douglas or Kreiger standard contour, medium weight barrel. It's heavier than a standard barrel but not as heavy as a bull barrel.

The rifle came with two 5 shot 100 yard test targets shot and signed by Les. The groups for each target measure slightly under 0.375. The ammunition used was 175 grain Federal Match.

I put a US Optics 3.5 - 22x scope on it and hitting torso targets out to 1000 yards is as easy as dialing in the correct elevation, figuring out wind drift and pulling the trigger.

My only negative comments are the gun + scope is HEAVY as it weighs about 14lbs; and the cost is over $3K. I got the gun as a special order though Crazy John in Coeur d'Alene, ID. It took about 22 weeks from the order date to receive the rifle.

I agree, I know mine shoots better than I can shoot it. When I'm in the groove I get very tight groups.

A few weeks ago I was out shooting with a friend. I was not in the groove that day and it showed on the target. I let my friend shoot it and he had all the shots touching each other.

I hate it when someone beats me with my own rifle but thats life.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

You should send patches a message he has a RWsnider build AR10 4sale right now at a killer price. He's letting it go to fund his newest build the trunk monkey from Tuscan Dave here on the hide. Patches is a great guy and a hell of a shooter he's the one that started the DTA thread, I've seen him shoot that AR10 and I have shot it personally and it's a tac driver.

Correct. I called Noveske yesterday hoping the stars would align and they would build me one - no joy. Megan did say they would begin N6 production again sometime shortly after Christmas.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

Just curious, what's wrong with the LWRC REPR? I have one which has proven to be very accurate for a semi auto. I really like the ability to stop the piston as well and manually rack the next round.

I wouldn't say anything is "wrong" with it but there are better options available when you take into account that LWRC considers 1-1/4" @ 100yds to be acceptable accuracy for their $3200 rifle.

Nothing wrong with REPR it's just not the most precise 308 AR on the market.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

BlackRifle1 said it best, all of these guns will outshoot the shooter. I would be a proud owner of any of these fine rifles that everyone here in this forum has. It is all about PERSONAL PREFERENCE, unless you can take out ALL HUMAN VARIABLES, it is going to be who is the best shooter under the same conditions. I picked JP Enterprise because they are light, and because I have read the LEAST amount of problems they have compared to all other rifles. IMO

i dunno what the lead times are, but i have a friend that's been waiting for 21 weeks now. i think they told him 16-20, but they can't get any bolts in to do the headspacing! he's a little ticked off, but so be it

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

I ordered a GAP-10 about a month ago, was told to expect 8 months.

Re: Most accurate .308 AR

If all three can out shoot the shooter, then the tie breaker would be reliability. Witch on can I throw in the dirt and shoot? Witch one can I shoot the most without cleaning? Basically witch one of these top three rifles needs the least babying to shoot?
