Saturday I will be the proud owner of a new
FN TSR XP 300WSM. I would love to be able to
reach out to 1,500 yrds one day......for the time
being a 1,000 yrd goal is it. I wanted a US Optics
scope but just cant afford one. So, here goes;
What scope would y'all recommend for this rifle
with a 1,000 to possibly 1400 yrds with a 12-1300
dollar budget. Alls I wanna do is hit steel with her.
I dont hunt much at all. Thx men

Re: Lemme put it like this......

If what you want is US Optics save your money and get what you want. It is the only way you will find full satisfaction.

See if you can beg borrow or steal something in the mean time your budget leaves you half way to your goal maybe more so if you can buy used.

When it comes to toys dont settle for less than what you want. You will eventually spend your money twice.

Re: Lemme put it like this......

I hear ya man. I really do. Thx.

But I'm not too picky. I have heard good things
about the NF BR 8-32scopes scopes as well.
ya see, Im just learning that I dont really need all the
bells and whistles that come with a USO unit.
I mainly want good xx and clarity at 1000-1200the yrds
Im thinkin thats about as far as I could push this rifle

Re: Lemme put it like this......

Buy a used NF NXS. They come along in the 1200 range frequently.

+1 on the above. Have a read through the Optics for sale section of the forum and find a good, used NF NXS (I'd recommend the 5.5-22x for your stated purposes). Plenty of different reticles, turrets, etc. available used in your price range.

Re: Lemme put it like this......

Thx guys. Seems everything always comes back to the good ole
5-22 or 5-25 whether NF or other brands. I believe these scopes
have what? 100 moa? If and then elevation and windage are key
to my objective I may resign myself to the Vortex Razor 5-20
I can't imagine not liking .......Therefore I reckon the 8-32
NF would be tough to get 1000-1200to yrds respectively

The 22x NF (or 20x Razor) are MORE than adequate magnification for 1200yds and beyond for ringing steel as you indicated was your purpose for the scope/rifle setup. While the addt'l magnification of the 32x NXS is nice in some settings, there are drawbacks when dealing with mirage at higher magnification, as well as the more limited internal adjustments of the 32x model (only 65MOA total elevation and 45MOA windage versus the 22x model's 100MOA elevation and 60MOA windage). With a properly canted base on your rifle (at least 20MOA), the more limited adjustment of the 32x should still get you to your intended ranges all things being equal.

Re: Lemme put it like this......

When I was at NF, we had guys using the big Cheytacs and other similar rifles going with the 5.5-22xs due to the elevation adjustment. Some guys would shoot to two miles and say they had no problem seeing their steel targets with the 22x scopes.

Keep an eye out for a used 5.5-22x56mm. It'll do everything you need and then some.

Re: Lemme put it like this......

the SWFA SS 5-20 non-illuminated is a great scope for $1300 new. There are usually a few in the classifieds for $1100.

Okay thats different. Unlike you I get fixated on crap and develope obsessions for things. I have tried to settle in the past but because I am so weak it never works out and I end up spending more to get what I want. This morning was a good example I'm out chopping one inch sapplings with a Stihl 440 chainsaw. Thats typical for the work I do with this saw. A coping saw would have been perfect for my use but my disease has me save up for months and buy the pro grade tool.

If anyone can help me with this I wuld really appreciate it. The downside is an empty bank account and horsing around a huge chain saw. The upside is an almost constant, fully engorged, erection when I use my toys.

I already know shooting prone at 100 yards when my S&B 5-25x56 arrives is going to suck. I will need a second Atlas for my belt buckle.

Bingo.

Or search out a used Viper PST and continue saving your pennies til you can sell the PST and buy the USO that you wanted to start with.

Re: Lemme put it like this......

You would be surprised at how functional 15x is. The military used 10x for decades, with great success. Higher magnification leads to more problems with mirage. I have this for sale right now, and is in y our price range. This scope has served me very well for 3 years, sold the rifle it was on, and am using my other NF with a dew more options.

Perhaps you can help me out...how do you mount the atlas to shoot prone with said erection. I have tried digging a hole, but I have trouble locating it where I need to get my natural POA. Folding it results in unacceptable pulse bounce of my reticle. I always end up back on the bench, which is frustrating. Maybe I too need to stop buying the best toys?

Me to, I have two 440's, and they are the best saws ever made. Get yourself a Stihl 362, much lighter and more managable cutting those sapplings. Or if you can find one, an 024 Super. I have one that's over 20-years old and still runs like it's new.

For the Op; Keep an eye out here on the hide, and you'll find a good used NF NXS 5-22 that will fit in your budget, It'll work well for what you want to use it for. Later on you can move up to higher end glass, and you'll have no problems selling the NF.

I mount it on my crank like a reverse spigot. Works for me, ymmv.

Dont ever settle on the toys. In the end a boner is still just a dick that is likely to get you into more trouble than its worth. A USO/Schmidt and Bender/Hensoldt, etc. will never make you go apple picking or cause you to skulk out of a bedroom before sunrise like some sort of criminal.

Re: Lemme put it like this......

Well said pmclaine! I actually LOLd. If you want it buy it, otherwise you wont be happy. And this site doesn't help any with everyone talking and showing pics of the (insert gear) you wanted.
