Gunsmithing Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Today we picked up the 50BR action that will be used on the PCR "Prac50". It's a Mcmillan left port, Right hand bolt 50 Benchrest action. I love everything about it!

Three, 5/16x24 action screws. Six, 8-32 scope base screws.
photo-342.jpg

Came with this thick, bad ass aluminum ADL trigger guard.
photo-344.jpg

Bolt locking lugs lock up at 3 and 9 instead of 12 and 6 like a Rem700. Putting the extractor in the perfect position..
photo-343.jpg

Last week I ordered a Stainless Lilja Navy contour 15twist barrel for it. Finished length for this "Prac50" will be 29" initially. Im going to test fire it with factory Hornady 750gr Amax ammo. My idea is to tune the barrel to the ammo by shortening it in 1" increments from 29" down to 26" stopping when it shoots under half MOA. If it shoots under half MOA at 29" I'll leave it that long and be very happy.

Basically tuning the rifle to the ammo instead of tuning the ammo to the rifle(by hand loading). This rifle may go up for sale after completion and test firing, so it must shoot above average with readily available factory ammo.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Finally got a chance to take my PCR rifle out. Here are the specs:

-Completely trued 700 with "Phoenix" bolt nob
-22 inch Bartlein 1 in 11.25 twist m40 contour
-HS precision stock with the barrel channel opened up by PCR
-I had them do the barrel and action in FDE
-Mark 4 20 MOA base
-Seekins low max 50 rings
-SWFA 5-20 HD

The rifle shoots great. I am a beginner and I was able to shoot sub .5 MOA groups. Southwest ammunition's 175 grain loads shoot amazingly through it. Time to place an order.

Here are some pics and a video of me working the bolt. Thanks PCR! Great product, and most importantly, top notch service. Do not hesitate to order from these guys!

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Here's one just finished up.
We're using a lot of Brux and Rock barrels. Every thing is shooting very well.
We've got our new lathe set up and have quickened rifle build times a little.
Most of our wait time right now is due to waiting on stocks or special order barrels.
We're going to spend some money on special size barrels and flat-top stocks to keep them in stock. Standard contour barrels we can get pretty quick, or already have in stock.

Turn around time right now on Bedding jobs and muzzle threadings is 1-2 weeks. Cerakote is 2 weeks.
Rifle builds that have all the parts are quick right now. Like 1-2 months quick!

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

MitchK,

That is a Badger Tactical Thruster brake blended to an M40 contour barrel.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

I have a couple quick questions.

I recently picked up a Remington 700 that is marked AZ Precision. When I got the rifle, I was told you guys did the machine work on the rifle. Doing some web searching, it leads back to your website. I am just curious if AZ Precision is the same as PCR, or if you guys changed names at some point.

The rifle is a definite shooter, so there are no problems either way, just curious.

Also on your site it says you do barrel threading and make custom thread protectors. How long is your current turn around on something like that? Also I assume removing the barreled action from the stock and sending that is ok?

Thanks in advance.

Brian

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Brian,

Yes, we started PCR in August, 2011.

Your barreled action will be in shop for 7 - 10 days. Make sure that you send the bolt.

Thanks.

Thank you sir

We just got NICs new "Micro Slick" (black) Cerakote for use on bolt bodies. Goes on VERY thin and is VERY wear resistant. So I hear.

I'll be coating my bolt in it this week to try it myself.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Mad props to you sir, you do some nice work. What type of machine did you cut the 10/22 receiver from, and how many steps did it take if you recall.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Thank you very much.
The 10/22 receiver took about two weeks and was done on a mill in gunsmithing school.

It could be done in a couple days no problem. Don't know how many steps. Bout 12 maybe.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Just got my FN bolt back and the new bolt knob looks great. I had Keith install the 3 ring pheonix and the detail was great.Service and communication were top notch.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Here's my first attempt at digi camo on a stock. It's a buddies stock. I did the work this am in only a couple hours just to see how it'd go. I learned a lot doing it and next time will come out much better. Still, its not bad...

I have some quesions... I'm building another AR, and i'm wondering if anyone has a preference... Either POF upper and lower, or Seekins... Any opinions?

We don't build ARs. But both POF and Seekins both offer very high quality products.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

That camo job is great. If you need some more practice I can send you my xlr.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

FN bolt and Savage bolt before Cerakote
When we screw the knob on tight, it still requires a decent amount of hand sanding to blend it this well.

photo-400.jpg

All knob installs other than Remingtons get screwed + epoxied. So it will not unscrew.
After Cerakote these installs will look SWEET.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Rifle just returned from Phoenix Custom Rifles (PCR) where I had the barrel cut back to 18" and thread 5/8x24. PCR also fitted a very nice custom thread protector and re-cerakoted the entire rifle including the bottom metal and 2 magazines OD green. The rifle started as a AO build with 26" barrel. I think the 18" barrel made this rifle perfect. Thanks PCR!

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Will you put a new bolt knob on a CZ455 22LR rifle? Looking for a badger type knob but on a smaller scale since it's going on a 22.

Thanks.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Pillar Bedding with Devcon 10110

Guys, we're lucky enough to have McMillan refer bedding and inlet work our way and we do quite a few.

Bedding, inlet or Cerakote work is in and out of the shop in a week, maybe 2.

This htg came in for pillar bedding. The bolt handle was hitting the stock so we opened the handle inlet with a tang knife and coated it and the barrel channel with Coyote Tan Cerakote.
bedinlet002.jpg

PT&G DBM inlet
This A5 came in for a DBM inlet. It's the new PT&G detachable mag system. Very good system to work with. Feeds very well.
We relieved the trigger inlet area of the stock where the Jewel safety was scraping. Also had to cut a kiss in the DBM so that the safety would function unobstructed/properly.

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Here's 2 of the 5, PCR 7 mag hunting rifles with Brux 9T SS barrels that are coming out of the shop. 4 this month.

The first one was the McMillan A3 Sporter that I posted a while back. Link!

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...578#Post3394578

The twins below have #5's @ 24".
The closest in the picture is my own hunting rifle that I just rebuilt.
bedinlet003.jpg

I took mine to the range with 140 Nosler Ballistic tips. It seems to like IMR 4831 at 3150 fps. It also shot 1/2" with IMR 4350 at 3250 fps so I'll be fine tuning the 4350. I've shot a lot of bucks over the years with the 140's and 4350. It hits them hard out to 600 yds!

Re: Phoenix Custom Rifles work pics and reviews

Great looking rifles. I am working on specs for a 6.5 Creedmoor I want to send you guys to start building.

I talked to Keith and Brad last week in their shop and they were more than helpful with advice.

Keep the pics coming!
