((((( 100 YARD !!! ))))) THE BOLT ACTION SHOOTOUT OVERVIEW!
I thought this would be really fun for the Bolt-Action platform shooters to really show off your bad A$$ rifles and sniper's hide shooting skills in the Bolt-Action community. Enough of the "shoots .5moa all day long @ 100yards" talk, and to actually walk the walk!!!... Hell, to make it even more fun and challenging for you Bolt-Action boys and gals, you obviously walk at a higher standard, SO 3/8" (.375") will be your rule of thumb (semi-auto shootout prize crown is set at 1/2" / .5" !! FYI).... If you think this will be easy, then think again. You will never know until you try it! Will purchase a shot for the first .375" all day long crown! LOL

HERE ARE THE GUIDELINES TO POST:

1.) At 100yards (please be honest about this 100yards), all 6 groupings, 5shots each, 30 total bullets (no more, no less)... All consecutively shot!!! Must be on one target..... What ever size target you think you can get 6 groups @ 5shots each on.... Can NOT be on individual targets. MUST BE on one target with 6 total groupings, 5shots each, 30 total bullets. That's it!! Shoot as fast or slow as you want, but must be shot within that day (AKA, all day long)!!... If your one piece of paper / cardboard doesn't have 30 bullet holes, it doesn't count..... Bullet holes must be easy to see in your picture!! This is NOT about bullseyes!! All about grouping size average and your best group size!! All in good fun people... .25" or 5",, show off your skills baby! Just try your best! Everyone is welcome here regardless of skill! It's all Bolt-Action rifle cool baby!

    2.) Can be any caliber Bolt-Action type platform. 308, 223, 260, 30-06, what ever. BOLT-ACTION ONLY!!!

3.) Can use any type factory or reloaded ammo. What ever works best for your bolt-action rifle.

4.) cough, honestly measure with calipers the distance of your two furthest bullet holes of each 5shot groupings (((center to center of each bullet hole))) and write this measurement IN LARGE FONT BLACK MAGIC MARKER right next to each grouping (6 total measurements).

5.) Post close up picture of your best SINGLE group WITH CALIPERS showing the measurement!! MUST BE WITH CALIPERS!! NO RULERS ALLOWED!! If you don't have calipers, then go buy some. They are only $20 bucks!! Sheesshh, stop being such as cheap A$$ !! JK... Please be honest with your measurements!!! No coins or objects for scale!!! Just hard core measurements.

6.) Post picture of entire target showing all 6 groupings / measurements with calipers still on your best grouping!! NO picture, then it didn't happen!!

    7.) In your posting, add up all 6 measurements and divide by 6 for your average MOA shot. Example, 1.12" + 1.01" + .56" + .75" + 2.25" + 3.46" = 9.15 divided by 6groupings = 1.525" average.

    8.) Please, be honest!!!

9.) If you do reload, feel free to post your load specs!

10.) Post what type of Bolt-Action rifle, ammo used, and how you took your shots (prone, bench, bipod, sandbags used, blah blah blah)........... No lock down gun vises!! NO BENCHREST VISES!!! Sandbags are ok, bipods are ok, monopods are ok.... If you are using a vise, then you are not really shooting the damn rifle and a monkey can shoot the rifle for you.

11.) Please post a picture of your rifle with your entry!!!!

12.) there is NO SUCH THING AS "FLYERS" in this shootout.. any possible "flyers" you might have count as your group!! damn those flyers!!!

13.) Please put the type of rifle, your sniper's hide name, and date you consecutively shot at the top of your target!

14.) As long as you follow the rules, have 6 groups @ 5shots each / 30 total bullets only, then feel free to post your results regardless of your average / single group size even if you don't make the leader boards!! You can not have multiple rankings / measurements on the leader boards,,,, only your best entry will make the boards with your one rifle.... You can however, have multiple leader-board entries by using two completely different bolt-action rifles. In short, you can make as many attempts as you want with your rifle in order to improve your standing on the boards / get the best possible outcome with your rifle... no limits on entries..... the only way to be on the boards more than once at the same time is to use two different rifles.... Rock out as many bolt-action rifles / entries as you want. Time to bust out that bolt-action collection!! All info is good info. Each rifle is different, has different optics, has different purpose, and different operators!!!! Be respectful of everyone's postings! Sub MOA or not, show off your rifle and skills! This is all in good fun!

15.) IF and only IF, with a bolt-action, you get ALL 6 total groups, 5shots each, consecutively shot in one day of shooting, AT or UNDER 3/8"(.375") ON EACH GROUP @ 100yards, THEN you will get the esteemed title of, "This person, (your name), with this semi-auto rifle, (type/brand of rifle), shoots 3/8" (.375") ALL DAY LONG" on the original post!!!! You will be required to have caliper measurements with pics ON EACH GROUP if you think you made it this far!! No cheaters or you will be called out if anything looks fishy... Until then, you are mostly just full of BS!

THIS IS THE EXAMPLE ENTRY BELOW!! IF YOUR ENTRY DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THIS, THEN IT WILL NOT COUNT AND YOU WILL BE ASK TO RE-DO YOUR ENTRY (STARTS TODAY 10/04/12)!!!

Looking forward to taking a crack at this. Should be interesting!

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

Very cool! There should be at least 50 targets on here by the end of the day with all the people talking up their "laser" shooters! Haha

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

I already had this done months ago. I shot 6 groups and measured the. when my AIAX hit the 5000 round mark (on the 308 barrel.)

So here is all the data and pics, please let me know if I am missing anything:

    2012-02-27193343.jpg

Group 1 measured .89", including the cold clean bore shot that is way out to the left. The rifle does not experience cold bore deviation but when it is clean it takes a bit to settle in. Shots 2-5 measure .488", 3-5 measure .267".

Group 2 measures .638", got my scope adjustment backwards which is why poi is high (been shooting my DTA with a CCW Nightforce on it, this Bender is CW.)

Group 3 is the superstar, .277".

Group 4 measures .908" with a terrible flier, .360" without.

Group 5 measures .529", you can see my POA got a little obscured, may have been tighter had I been able to see.

Group 6 measures .412", same POA issues.

Average for all 6 five shot groups .609".

    Best group pics:

    2012-02-26172651.jpg

    2012-02-26172619.jpg

The rifle: AIAX with 5k plus down the tube. Bender 5-25 Gen2 XR on top.
    2011-11-03133706.jpg

Yes, it was shot prone with a rear bag. Rifle now has a fresh .260 barrel on it that shoots tIghter and I am looking forward to trying it again.

here's a field rifle i put together. Rem700 trued with a criterion 24" remage barrel, 243 1-8, in aics. BO rail with tps rings and bushy hdmr g2dmr [img:left]
    IMG_20120928_154558.jpg

here is the groups, ave is .634 off a harris and beanbag. Must mention this is 3 different loads during workup. [img:left]
    IMG_20121002_160630.jpg
    [/img]
I shot all these groups in less then 20 minutes also recording chrony data at the same time. The .8xx group has shot while zeroing and was looser then it should have been. Chronoing was slow that day. the 42 h4350 load ave 3130fps with a 8.xx later and shooting to 850 yds the drop from shooter coincided with 3130fps reading.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

I was testing a few different loads this day. The top 2 and middle left were black hills 175, the next 2 were copper creek 175, and the bottom right was a hand load I did at a buddys house (175 smk, 42gr varget)

    AI 308, 20" barrel, S&B 3x20 p4f
Average is .494 moa with the one wonder group of .086"

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

    Elfster,

Before we get to far into this, please consider changing this to 200 to 300 yds minimum. These bolt guns are going to shoot a lot of ragged holes at only 100 yds. It will be much easier to measure larger groups.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

I think it would be nice to have another post with 300 yards but i really doubt we will see many .25" average 6 shot groups without using a front rest. With what you read online you would think there would be pages and pages.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

do you guys want to stick with 100, or bump this up to 200 or 300? Please, LET ME KNOW ASAP before we get to far into this!

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

i've deleted the honorable mention#2, or 3/4" all day long as this stuff is a walk in the park for you bolt actions...

now is only 1/2" all day long and 3/8" crown title.

    and honorable mention for cartridge

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

thing is,,, i know bolt actions can easy do this 100yards in their sleep, BUT here is a few things.

1.) rifles brag about their accuracy based upon 100yard moa group... this thread is somewhat to give people a good solid idea of what rifles can do what,,, which rifle to purchase. as for example, GAP will guarantee 3/8" group @ 100yards type of thing.

2.) not everyone has a range over 100yards

3.) i think the 3/8" moa crown might still be hard to get even with a bolt action.. i might be wrong here

let me know what you all think ASAP,,, if you guys really want to bump this up to 200 or even 300 yards, then let me know ASAP!!!

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

    Elfster,

I know that you said no lock down gun vises, but do you consider a front benchrest and rear bag acceptable, or is this strictly practical shooting using bipod or sand bag?

I vote for at least 200 yds if for no other reason than to open up the groups. 300 to 400 would be better, but recognize this could exclude some folks.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

Honestly, you will be splitting hairs at 100 yards.
The groups will be ridiculously small....to the point you won't be able to tell if there were even 5 shots fired.

    I suggest 300 yards.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

if we do 200yards, then still keep the 3/8" crown, and 1/2" honorable mention#2?

i have no problem changing this to 200yards if you guys are game... i just hope it doesn't exclude too many people.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

    Elfester,

Maybe you could split it say a factory vs custom. Factory being a factory barrelled action with no action work in whatever stock/chassis you want. Only criteria that theres been no action work or barrel other than factory. This would better display the differances custom guns have and factory guns, so we can see the real potential both gun styles have. Just a suggestion.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

we can do 300yards also,, i just don't want to cut too many people out...

if you can, let me know what you think in total yards, and if we also change the groups size for crown and honorable mention#2

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

Or do both 100 and 200 factory and custom. 4 leader boards but keep it all in the same thread. Or create a new one just for posting targets into. I know i can get to 200 yards but not very often. I can get to a 100 yd range any time i want.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

you think it is possible for someone to actually get ALL 6groups, 5shots each, at or under 3/8" crown title at 200yards?

I honestly dont know. But it would be fun to find out. This thing is supposed to be a challenge though right?

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

This is going to get interesting. I'm for separating custom and factory at 200yds.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

If you need help keeping up with posting new data im happy to help if you want it. I like the idea of 100 and 300. I really want to see all these under half moa all day. I really like the idea of 30 total shots, I'm surprised I never came across the post for semi autos but I didn't. I feel a bench rest vise should be taken off or have there own list.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

I say stick with the 100 yard thing and open up a 300 yard in a different thread. I think a 3/8" 30 round ag is going to be tough enough if you require proper shooting (bipod and rear bag on your belly). I enjoy all the people who say "I can easily hold sub 1/2" all day @ 100 yds", well lets see it. I dont think the factory rifle vs. custom thing is fair b/c you will be putting bone stock 700s and Savages up against TRGs and AIs I dont think they are in the same class but both are factory rifles. I cant wait to give this one a go, just have to wait until I can see (having PRK int he AM).

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

there you all go, a just made another completely different 300yard thread, but with a 1/2"moa crown and 3/4" honorable mention... this might change, but so far that is what i'm sticking with...

i would like to do factory vs custom, but it would just be too much work for me as this already is.... then again, if DPMS is doing so well in the semi-auto shoout, then you might be amazed with how well factory bolts might do against the customs... if so then so be it.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

this is very nice 6brshooter, but no front benchrests allowed... only bipods, monopods, or sandbags, or nothing... get us another 6groups following the rules and you will be golden.. kick ass rifle and nice shooting so far!

as nice as this is,,, you're missing a ton of info and 2 other pics (close up pic and rifle pic)... follow the rules above... no front bench rests allowed FYI... please edit your post and you're golden... nice shooting and nice rifle so far my friend!

peps,, need to follow the posting guidelines in order to make an entry.

PLEASE follow the entry guidelines above (see example entry listed above). Calipers still need to be on the target both entire target and close up view... Very nice rifle.

    Keep it short and simple.

Yes, it was shot prone with a rear bag. Rifle now has a fresh .260 barrel on it that shoots tIghter and I am looking forward to trying it again.

Gang, please make sure you're following my example entry listed above or you're entry will not count.. Short and simple.. I have tons of info to go thru.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

Keep it at 100. Not everyone has easy access to 200 or 300, plus, those ranges don't add much in terms of wind reading skills etc, so might as well stick to 100 yards.

elfster... are you retired? because its going to be an all day job keeping up with 2 or 3 running events... hats off to ya bro, sd doon sd i see some results posted I will join in the fun, as for the range, im good for whatever. Call me an asshole but IMO thres no reason to own a precision centerfire rifle if you only have access to 100 yards.

with that said, im up for a .22lr comp also, 100 yards.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

there is now both a 100yard and 300yard... yes, not everyone has a 200plus range to go to. too damn hard to keep everyone happy.

no, i'm not retired and it really doesn't take much of my time once the thread is going... seriously wouldn't do this if it wasn't for copy / paste... what takes up more of my time than anything is when people don't read the rules, don't post the correct stuff, and don't do the math for me... in short, if you don't follow the rules and make a correct entry, then you're post will not count.. I just don't have the time.... not everyone has access to 200yard plus ranges JWP6114 you asshole!!! LOL JK. totally kidding.

yea no problem, i just cant think of one person i kno that would invest in a quality rig with no place to shoot it.

the defonition of long range shooting varries quite a bit.

I was flying over southern PA recently in a helicopter and saw a football field from about 5000 feet AGL, and tried to estimate 10 of them in a row and saw from a birds eye view how far it is... insane.

    Re: Bolt-Action, 6groups, 5shots, 30round SHOOTOUT!!!!

Sorry elfster, did not see the front rest rule change. Have to throw my sinclair fclass bipod on that 6br. Those groups were fired of a wobbly bench made from 3/4 plywood and 2x4s at the local range. The rules for the local br shoot is everyone shoots from the same bench design as the other competitors. Last match i stomped a guy in aggs that was running a panda 6ppc in a farley coax rest. Not because he couldn't shoot or his rifle was inferior, they weren't, he was used to concrete
