What is the longest shot you've made with an AR-15 sporting the 16" barrel and chambered in .223? Just curious. I have a Colt LE6920 and thought about retiring the Eotech and putting a precision scope on it. Any thoughts on this?

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Making a shot is one thing... Doing it with a sustainable level of accuracy and consistency is another.

Ive hit ivans at 900 with M855, but does that make the weapon worth a "precision scope", I say no.

Ill stick to a EOTech for close and a 1-6 or 1-8 max for 5.56/223.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

I would agree with Knight....I shot out there and got 3 hits out of 20 rounds, is it practical, nope....reason I did it is because I had a mag loaded and winding down the day and it was a buddy bet

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Well I don't like the idea of a precision scope on that model of .223, because it's not meant to be a precision rifle. Having said that if your looking for more long range accuracy a Trijicon with a RMR on top is a hot setup. You still get the CQB of the dot sight with the longer range out to 800 meters of a scope that is has a bullet drop reticle already setup for a 16" .223.

By the way there is one setup exactly like I'm talking about in the scopes for sale section that is a fantastic deal. I think you would save roughly 500 bucks over the same setup brand new.

Here it is so you can see what I'm talking about.

Exactly!

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

At a 45 degree angle, I hit the ground from over 2800 meters away with an M4 and that was without even aiming!! I'm that good!!

Seriously...it really comes down to what you want/need to do with the carbine that should dictate your optic choice. The 6920 is capable out of the box of accuracy around 2MOA (maybe a little better if you are a competent shooter with decent ammo, shooting in a vacuum, etc.). For obvious reasons, an EoTech will limit your accuracy and useful range of the carbine depending on your intended targets. A magnified, variable power optic, something like in the 1-4x range (not more than maybe 1-6x) is what I'd recommend for the 6920 if you want to go that route and with it, you should be capable of minute-of-man hits out to 500 or so with reasonable repeatability depending on your skill set. Again...keep in mind that your 6920 is NOT a precision rifle and will never be one without ditching a good portion of the existing rifle and rebuilding it into one.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Not exactly your setup- a number of months ago we were shooting medium and long range, and after shooting the other rifles, I pulled out the JP 3 gun rifle, an 18" with a 1-4x Burris Tac30. Lying on top of an SUV using only the magazine for support, I hit 5 railroad tie plates from 350 to 620 yards with 6 rounds. Torso sized targets at 400-500 aren't particularly difficult if the wind is cooperating.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Here is a video of me play'in around with one of my old 16" AR's at 600 yards.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

800y using my reloads and an acog. 12'X24" piece of steel. I sent about 30 rounds and thought I hadn't even hit the steel once. Upon inspection of the steel, 3 rounds found the target.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

600 with an ACOG with a 16 inch barrel.

I tried 1k with my 20 inch barrelled service rifle. Gave up after 8 rounds and switched to my M1A. . . . .

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

First of all....I'm not new to shooting. I was an MP in the military for almost 10 years and I've been a civilian police officer for 7 years. I understand my AR is not a "precision rifle". I haven't attempted to shoot anything over 300 meters with an AR. So I was just wandering what range do you CONSISTENTLY shoot your 16" version beyond 300 yards/meters.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

500 yards hitting a "B" mod target with a standard M16A2 fitted with iron sights like every other Jarhead within the past 30 or so years. I was at the range when some kid in the same boot battalion scored a 249 out of 250 with the very same standard issue rifles every other Marine used. Who knows how many countless rounds went through the barrel before he did that. Highest score in the history of boot camp. 247 was the previous record.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Never tried with my 6920 due to lack of good glass (1-4 isnt going to cut it very far out) but I put 4 out of 5 on a 12" plate at 800 with my 20" using mk262 I believe.

I have a 16" bull barrel 5.56 chamber and i shoot bulk green tip penetrator 62grn lake city ammo in mine. Furthest shot i have taken and made was 600 yards. Some of the rounds are key-holing which indicates they are not staying stable during trans-sonic regression. but out to 500 ill make my 24" gong target wish it wasn't out there...

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Subsonic at 600 from SS109 ammo?

Federal XM...something. Sorry im in australia.. cant just walk over and look at the box

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

I have shot out to 1150 with issued M4 and tracer ammo. We couldn't hear the impacts so we switched to tracers to see were the rounds were going. Worked great and we could hit a car very consistently as long as the environment didn't change. Really fun day we shot close to 20000 rounds of 556 that day between me and 2 other gyes and I didn't have to pay for any of it. Also the same day I learned to shoot while walking and how to control burst and full auto. Really great memories.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

i've shot 20 shot moa groups at 500y with my AR.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

650 on an 8" plate using a 16" Rainier Ultramatch barrel and Vortex 5-15x44 scope. 77gr Nosler Custom Comp at 2680fps. Quite easy when the wind doesn't change.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Hit 18 X 18 Steel at 864 and 2 ltr. pop bottles at 460 regularly with both of my AR15. One is 24" and the other is 16".

I'll add this......At 864 some hit sideways.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

some -pretty impressive shots from a carbine, haven't tried past 400 with my 20" yet!

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Sounds like you are a "practical" rifle shooter so with that assumption in mind, I use my 6920 as follows

100-200 idpa steel no hostage-barricaide = eotech only
100-200 idpa steel w/hostage-barricade = eotech+vortex 3x mag
200-300 idpa steel no hostage-barricade = eotech+vortex 3x mag
200-300 idpa steel w/barricade = 3-9x36mm
300-400 idpa steel 3-9x36mm

for practical use anything over 300 the terminal ballistics are suspect but practicing 300-400 is good skills practice for 300 or less.

If you've got the 3x mag then having a 1-4 or 1-5 doesn't make much sense and if you go with something like 3-9 you can use it on another platform ie: longer barreled 223/556 or longer effective range caliber.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

1300 yards with a HCS Mk12 Mod01 with 18 inch barrel and NF 2.5 x 10 24mm, Black Hills 77 gr reman. Last fall at Dugway Proving Grounds Utah. A 16 inch barrel should get you on target and out to 1000+ but a good scope and some skills will be required.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

I'm not saying a 16" carbine is the end all in accuracy, but it isn't bad. 8/10 shots in a 8" shoot-n-c @ 300 offhand was my personal best with that rifle and a compM4 Aimpoint w/o magnification.

I switched over to an ACOG and still getting familiar with it. However I like it a lot thus far. I took the combination to a zombie shoot. The coarse of fire was 10 shots offhand at 100 and 200 yards respectively. The head of the zombie was only 5" wide and I had head shots at both yardages. Along with body shots, I had some misses to, but it wasn't the guns issue. I took second place missing a shoot off with first by one head shot.

With the M16a2 as a young Marine we went 500yards with it's 20" barrel with just irons. It wasn't difficult at all. I'm not sure as to the ballistics of the carbine that far out, since I haven't pushed it that far, but 300yards out it does just as good.

Sometimes it is hard to wrap my mind around not shooting one hole groups with something when I have a group of 20 in a silver dollar or more as the range increases. I however take my target and hold it up against myself. Every shot would be fatal or at the very least extremely debilitating. That is the main purpose of this rifle. If I want to channel a match hp down somethings ear channal, well then I break out a different shooter. When I want fast and handy with a certain degree of accuracy, the little carbine is the ticket.

My rifle: Colt 6920, KAC RAS, Magpul (CTR, AFG, MIAD), Trijicon TA33 ACOG w/green chevron.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Ive made multiple hits at 400 and 500 using both a 16" and 18" with eotech and 3x mag. on idpa steel.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Fig 11 target, 30 of 30 rounds @ 500m. Was a LAR-15. 1-4X leapers cheapie scope. Ammo was SS109.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

If the objective isnt hitting with the velocity which allows the projectile in question to perform as designed, then scope it out and fire away

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

shot my M4 and 16 inch 300 blackout to 600 yds with great success over the years.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

Used my PWS 16" barrel with a Leatherwood CMR 1-4x scope at 856yards. It was actually comical cause it was the end of the range day and i was shooting my bolt gun all day. Before packing things up i said let me check this AR out with this new scope i had just gotten. It was already zerod at 100. So just standing up i used the scope's BDC reticle and went a little lower than the 800yard mark and pulled off a shot and it literally hit a foot in front of the 12x24" steel i had hanging. I was so damn excited. Needless to say just standing up i fired another 10-15 rounds and hit the steel once or twice and was within a foot or two every time.

Now mind you. This was using straight 55g XM193 and standing. I bet if i was used 75gr bullet and using bipod prone or bench, and actually dialing the elevation instead of guestimating using the BDC reticle my chances would dramatically increase. Either way, i would not want to be standing at 856yards while someone was shooting at me with my setup

At this year's Rifles Only course in Colorado, we shot my Wilson Combat (1/9 twist) with Leupy 1.5x-5x and another student's Christensen Arms (1/7 twist) with 4x ACOG out to 750 yards, prone with bipod, at density altitudes of 6400 to 6800 feet.

The Christensen was shot late in the day, with light left to right breezes, at a 24"x40" steel plate, using PMC 55 grain FMJ-BT. Once we adjusted for the wind, I hit 5 for 5 on the plate, using the 800 yard setting on the ACOG. Given the light, my spotter couldn't see the impacts on the steel, but the sound was solid ring -- although faint at that distance. We assumed they were fairly centered hits, due to the clear ring of the steel.

The Wilson was shot late the next day, with fishtailing breezes. We assumed a required wind hold off to the right, and I didn't hit anything but air and pasture. So Jacob Bynum jumped behind the gun and rang steel on his second round. OK, that's why he's the instructor and I'm just a hack student.
blush.gif

Anyway, the 800 yard pre-dial on my Leupold resulted in slightly high hits on steel with HSM 55 grain V-Max ammo. I produced a 10-to-12ish inch group with 10 rounds at 1 o'clock on the steel, using a center-of-steel hold.

All of the RO students and one of the instructors was surprised at how well the 16" barrel M4 knock-offs worked at 750 yards, using OK (but not match quality) ammo. Jacob took it in stride, stating that many of us under-estimate the capabilities of both ARs and shorter barrels.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

I shoot my 18" HCS Mk Mod O to 800 yards with excellent results on paper and to 550-600 on coyotes with a good % of hits. 2.5-10x24 NF. Have had kills to a bit over 600. 77 SMK.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

I built an AR with a 16" stainless Noveske barrel and a SWFA 1-4x24

The farthest I have actually shot it is 300 yards off a bipod and I shot nothing but 3-4" 10-shot groups using a variety of 69-77 grain ammo from Black Hills and COR-BON.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

groundhog at almost 400yds, mines chambered in 25-223, wears a 4-16 vortex usually "hunt" at 10x.

Ive shot 20 over 250yds this year, the rest were 100yds or below.
36 total

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

My 26" barrelled Mosher-built 223 AI is consistently good to about 550-600 on ideal days as a coyote hunter [6" target basically]. My favorite bullet for this kind of work is the 65 SGK, for the BC/accuracy/terminal ballistic hunting system. Best load that ever shot out of this rig though was the 65 JLK Low Drag using the old DPMS VLD magazine.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

600 yards
NRA Service Rifle match, 20" barrel with iron sights
This is the last phase of the match, slow fire, prone position.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

730 yards, 18" stainless/SPR barrel running 75 Hornady bthp's.

Once I figure out the wind it was relatively easy, I would hit 3-4 shots in a row then the wind would change and I would miss. Readjust for wind and I was good again
smile.gif

Targets were 2/3 Larue torso style steel.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

470 yard les Baer mark4 3-10 with m4 bdc head shot on a doe. Only deer I killed that year lol

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

766 Yds (700 Meters), 5 consecutive hits, 18" Noveske SPR barrel, 77 SMK reloads, perfect conditions (and quite a bit better than I normally see).

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

shot my service rifle match AR at 898yds this morning at a 12X15 steel plate, open sights with sling and shooting coat launching 80GR single loaded, 9 shots to sight in and 4 out 10 hits. (probably subsonic by then) That was hard as hell but soo much fun.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

400 yds steel plate, with iron sights. Took me three shots to get on target, then I was able to hit it consistently with handloads.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

535 yards is as far as I've shot my 6920, it performed just fine and using expanding bullets terminal performance was still sufficient to kill anything I'd shoot with 5.56 ammo. Ballistic testing was done using a wet phone book. The only times I missed the phone book it was me since I was using a backpack for a rest.

I bought my 6920 thinking 1-2 moa would be all i could get out of the rifle. I was wrong, it shoots better than moa when I drive it properly using handloads. My 6920 is far more accurate than my 16" rock river (hbar profile) and its less picky about ammo too.

When I first started load work up for my 6920, I was shocked at some of the groups I was getting. I just didn't think the rifle would shoot that well. The loads it liked generally shot between .66" and .75" for 5 rounds using varmint or match bullets. My rock river hovers around 1 - 1.25" at 100 with most everything but will go lower with the 53 grain vmax and only the 53 grain vmax.

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

For consistent hits my furthest shots were 575 yards on steel hanging plate that was about 24" square. Using 60 grn Hornady JHPs pushed by 26grn of Varget powder.

My furthest shot with factory ammo was 224yrds with 40gr Nosler Ballistic Tip varmint bullets. One shot kill on Montana prairie dog, just turned into red mist!

Re: Longest shot you've made with an AR-15

My local range has steel targets out to 600 yards. I've been able to hit them regularly with my 16" carbine with a 1.5-4x scope and my DMR with a 3-9x scope. Although I do reload, in each case I was able to do this with surplus ammo. I have no idea how they were grouping at that distance as I could not check the targets.
