TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

I just purchased a Sako TRG-42 in .338 LM. She's black, with the muzzle brake, 3 ring scope mount (I've read about that), bipod and a NF NXS 12-42 x 56 scope. I will post a picture when she's out of jail later this week.

I searched but cannot find:

1. What different mags will it take? Factory Sako only? AI?

2. What rate of twist is the barrel? I read that the new ones are all 1 in 10 but that prior to 2009 some were 1 in 12. What's the best way to find out what I have?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Jay

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

It will take factory mags only, unfortunately.
If it is a 1 in 10 twist barrel, it will say on the barrel by the caliber. The easiest way to determine what twist you have is to use a cleaning rod to measure it.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

1- It will only take Sako TRG 42 338 mags.

2- The twist is labeled on the barrel. I just took this pic, the 10" on mine means it is a 1 in 10". Yours will either have a 10" or 12", and it goes without saying that if it has a 12" it is a 1 in 12".

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Correct me if I wrong, but I believe the 1-12" are not marked and only the 1-10" are marked.
If you stretch the 338s legs a little, you may want more adjustment than the 12-42 will give, the 5-22 and 3-15 NXS work great!

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Yea see if you can re-neg on the 12-42 assuming it is still NIB in jail with the rifle and go for the 3.5-15 F1. It is much better suited to the intended use of that rifle.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Thanks much, guys. Bummer about the mags but oh well.

On the scope, it came as a package deal, barely used, and at a screamin' deal.

I'm going to see how I like it. I have a 5.5-22 NXS on my STR .308

Thanks again.

Hey 9H...can you tell me what you don't like about the NF 12-42? I think I read something about limited elevation adjustment.

Thanks.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

I really liked my 12-42, if it had 90-100 moa of elevation I would still have it.

Despite the 30mm tubes, the big NXS has "only" 45MOA of elevation travel and, depending on your intended Zero Range, you won't usually get all of that 45MOA.

It's not a big deal given the availability of +MOA scope mounts which are universally used on LR rifles.

There is no marking on the 1-12" version, at least not on mine.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

you will love the price of the factory mag (225 , yeah thats right not a typo)
1 5 rd mag can be enough - if you are shooting factory ammo you still get to spend 20$ before refilling the mag - do not sweat the scope, even with a 0 moa base you may not run out of adjustment till 800yds, with a 20 moa base maybe 1500

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Thanks. I got lucky and found the mags on Gunbroker for $145 with $5 shipping. Most were $175.

I'll be testing out the whole rig (out to 1000) next weekend.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Nice rig! FYI- in case you didn't know, the timing on your brake is all jacked up.You should thread it on until it gets snug and then back it up until the mirage band screw (the one that doesn't make the brake tight on the muzzle) sits at 12:00, it should line right up with the iron sight notch behind the muzzle.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Thanks so much. I just mounted the scope last night so sighting in is next. I'll get that timing tweeked. I really appreciate it.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

It shot great today...all the way to 1000 yds. Thanks for the help with the brake timing, BM11!

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Nice rifle. That's what I plan on buying next even though I experienced a little stick shock when I saw the price of the factory bipod and mags.

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Indeed. Like that brown color

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Jaytil, I have a trg42 folder and work in LA where do you shoot this baby at 1000 yards?

Re: TRG-42 .338 LM newbie needs help!

Ok thanks.
