Basically, I recently got out of the Corps and have been missing shooting. A friend got me started on long range precision so I just bought a base Savage Model 10 FP .308 Win, with Weaver 20 MOA base, TPS TSR 30mm rings and SWFA SS 12x42. Took it out and shoot a loose zero and did some 100yd 1/2" dot drills, and I love it. I am definitely looking to upgrade my stock to a McMillan A4 or H-s Precision. I want to improve accuracy, but adjustable cheek comb is a must. But that is besides the point. Most of these stock upgrades have magazine wells.

Do I need to convert my action from a blind mag to a detachable mag for the new stock to work?

Even if it is not an immediate upgrade when I purchase a stock, I am still going to want to eventually get a detachable mag system just for convenience.

What do I need to get for my savage to do this myself, and how difficult will it be?
Does the mag system depend on the stock I get?

You have two metal options- CDI and Accurate Mag. AM makes the factory DMB that uses AICS mags for the Savages.
Pick up your choice of stock- they both use pretty close to same inlet as I understand it. You can find HS take-off stocks already inlet.

or you can go with a Mcree or similiar and do the chassis thing.

Keep an eye out here in the options for sale section. I just picked up a Mcmillan A5 painted brand new never used inletted $600. I picked up a B&C medalist for my 700 used for $600. Just look all the time because the sfuff can go real fast.

I'm looking at doing the same thing. From what I have read on other posts you can buy a stock that isn't inlet and send it to Jeff at CDI. It looks like it is around $60 for the inlet and a little over $200 for the CDI DBM (without a mag). I'm still researching but I think you can use AI or Alpha mags with that set up. If that isn't right I'm sure someone will correct me. Good luck with your build

I ran an HS precision M24. I worked for me, just wish I would have added a karsten/ cheek rest. But my rifle came with a factory DBM. Do not hesitate to give Jeff a call at CDI. His customer service is the BEST (as well as manners composite stocks) I have EVER dealt with. Hands down. Jeff's products are top end and so is his customer service (if ever needed). His mag prices aren't out of line with anyone elses. He is more than happy to answer emails and prompt as well.

You also have the option of running a factory Savage bottom metal as well. Price is cheap when compared to other bottom metals.

Not to mention that z71 makes simply outstanding extended magazines for the factory Savage DBM bottom metal! Check out his Rat mags.

To answer your original question; no, you do not need to upgrade to a D/M to use a stock with a mag well. You could use bottom metal with a hinged floor plate. You could add a single feed magazine follower too, as most LR competitive applications are singly fed.

If the D/M is your choice anyway, here's another option. Dan at Dark Eagle is very well equipped and skilled to do all sorts of gun work. He has built and rebuilt my comp rifle, always well done, always a better gun than my skills can fully employ.

I didn't think HS Precision made this stock for Savage ... how did you get it to work?
