We noticed my son's Grendel wasn't "on" last range trip.
Decided I'd give it the once over while he was away at school this week...
Broke it down and peered down the barrel. At first, I thought the barrel had been gouged and trashed just ahead of the throat. I've never had/seen a carbon "ring" in any of our bolt guns, I had to research to find out what the hell it was...
This ring was HEAVY... I think my son was lazy in his cleaning, just using the Wipe-Out but not visually inspecting the bore after cleaning...I know this caked-on shit wasn't from one or two range trips.
Two Wipe-Out applications including an overnight soak lightened the ring. Online research led me to JB Bore Paste, got a jar from Brownells and just finished a half-hour of short-stroking patches with the paste and dry patches after to clean out the bore.
Still a dark ring inside the barrel. WTF?...
The rest of the stainless barrel is shining like a mirror. Not a fan of abrasives in the barrel (hell, I don't even use brushes) so I don't want to use more paste unless you guys say to do so...
So...
Is it possible that the stainless could become "stained" from the carbon somehow? I've never seen anything so stubborn...
If not, is there some type of solvent that will dissolve the last stubborn traces of carbon? Like maybe an engine cleaner?
Wipe-Out and M-Pro 7 ain't cutting it...
It's gone from a scary looking thick mess ( I know there must have been high pressures) to a light ring, but I'd still like to get rid of the rest of it if possible.
Also, why have I never seen this in any of our bolt guns? The Grendel load we shoot is a tad on the hotter side (27.5 of 8208 under the 123 Amax), but not too bad- is it the heat in the throat from the more rapid rate of fire as compared to bolt guns?
Suggestions appreciated...
