We noticed my son's Grendel wasn't "on" last range trip.
Decided I'd give it the once over while he was away at school this week...
Broke it down and peered down the barrel. At first, I thought the barrel had been gouged and trashed just ahead of the throat. I've never had/seen a carbon "ring" in any of our bolt guns, I had to research to find out what the hell it was...

This ring was HEAVY... I think my son was lazy in his cleaning, just using the Wipe-Out but not visually inspecting the bore after cleaning...I know this caked-on shit wasn't from one or two range trips.

Two Wipe-Out applications including an overnight soak lightened the ring. Online research led me to JB Bore Paste, got a jar from Brownells and just finished a half-hour of short-stroking patches with the paste and dry patches after to clean out the bore.

Still a dark ring inside the barrel. WTF?...

The rest of the stainless barrel is shining like a mirror. Not a fan of abrasives in the barrel (hell, I don't even use brushes) so I don't want to use more paste unless you guys say to do so...

    So...

Is it possible that the stainless could become "stained" from the carbon somehow? I've never seen anything so stubborn...

If not, is there some type of solvent that will dissolve the last stubborn traces of carbon? Like maybe an engine cleaner?
    Wipe-Out and M-Pro 7 ain't cutting it...

It's gone from a scary looking thick mess ( I know there must have been high pressures) to a light ring, but I'd still like to get rid of the rest of it if possible.

Also, why have I never seen this in any of our bolt guns? The Grendel load we shoot is a tad on the hotter side (27.5 of 8208 under the 123 Amax), but not too bad- is it the heat in the throat from the more rapid rate of fire as compared to bolt guns?

    Suggestions appreciated...

If you are going to live up to the VJJPunisher you have to come out of the "darkness" and back to the pink side.

    Re: Stubborn carbon ring...help...

The only cure it elbow grease of some sort..

chemicals help, but a short chamber cleaning rod with a cotton bore swab and some kind of mild abrasive, like JB Bore past or Losso Bore past is what it takes.

I have used both in my 7WSM and my 7 Dakota, JB works a touch better, but they both get the job done...

Here is one thread on the subject, there are lots of them out there. Speedy Gonzalez wrote a heck of an article on it about a decade ago... I'll try to find the link

There is a thread on the grendel forum about this. Use JB bore past & clean it good. Try to work on the ring cause the JB past is abrasive.

    Re: Stubborn carbon ring...help...

    Thanks guys..
Yeah, my post on the Grendel forum. Just seeing if there was another option since the JB didn't seem to be getting it.

I'll keep on scrubbing... I was concerned that the stuff might damage the bore, but it does seem pretty benign.

    Re: Stubborn carbon ring...help...

get a bunch of bronze brushes and some slip 2000, a good rod and lots of elbow grease. I would let your son do most of the work though.
    good luck.

I'm afraid we've lost him forever, at this rate ...

Use ballistol, spray the hell out of it and let it stand. ballistol isn't caustic or harmful at all. Great stuff. Spray, let sit for 45 mins and spray again.

Ahh, sorry, must've overlooked that. I would soak with a dedicated carbon cleaner like Carb-Out (which I hear is phenomenal for baked on carbon). Then go at it with a nylon brush. If that doesn't work, repeat with a copper brush.

    Re: Stubborn carbon ring...help...

Started with a patch wrapped around a jag, then switched to a bronze brush, with an oversize patch (.30 cal) wrapped around it a couple of times.

I'm using a short, cheap aluminum (Hoppes) rod section instead of the Dewey so it doesn't rotate when I short-stroke it.

What sucks, is that I can't use the bore guide with the stuff, and I can't help but get some in the chamber..Oh well, guess I've gotta find a way to get it all cleaned outta there.

    Temp,
Thanks for the suggestion. Will check the local NAPA/Auto Zone to see if I can locate a can.

I'm almost ready to break out the 600 grit lapping compound!

The way you're going I'd suggest an electric bore cleaning solution: clean stainless rod, two rubber stoppers with holes, two alligator leads, some wire, a power source, and an electrolytic solution.

Firearm specific Carb-out. Not to be mistaken with carb cleaner.

From the makers of Wipe-Out: http://www.sharpshootr.com/carbout.htm

    And a review: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2007/11/great-results-with-new-carb-out-solvent/

    Good luck!
