Hey guys,
Haven't really posted much here, just reading and learning. I have a Rem 700 SPS Varmint .243 I use for ground hogs and what not. Started reloading last year and got in to shooting out to 600 yards. Figured it was time to do a few small upgrades, nothing too crazy. Figured I would share. No pictures of before, basically factory, just a homemade cheek piece, bipod, cheap tasco mil-dot.

Remington 700 SPS Varmint .243
Bell and Carlson Tactical Medalist A5 Style. Black w/green webbing.
SWFA SS 10x42M w/butler creeks
EGW HD 0moa Base
Burris Xtreme Tactical Rings
9-13" bipod.

I was reloading Nosler 80gr purple tips with 41.8gr varget and recently switched to Berger 95gr VLD's with H4350. This is my 1st ladder test with this new set up at 425yrds. I'm thinking 8,9,10(42.5-43.5 gr) for 2nd ladder test.

Hopefully Sandy doesn't do too much damage. Would like to get out this weekend to do 2nd ladder test. I'm very happy with the upgrades. Mainly the stock being its fully adjustable and no more straining or feeling cramped to keep a full sight picture. Rock solid too. Scope tracks awesome as well. Maybe stretch to 800-1000 in future.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Nice rig !!! You guys are going to get pummeled by sandy. We're gettin lucky. Guess sandy doesn't like New York either.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

was thinking about getting that stock, how do you like it?

Re: Few additions to rem 700

I love the stock. Definitely makes the rifle completely different. It is very solid compared to the factory stock. Mainly the fact of the adjustable cheek piece and butt plate. No more straining to keep a full sight picture. I also really like the pistol grip. I searched around and a lot of places this stock was "out of stock". I called 1shotgear.com and they had 1 left. Shipped from colorado to pennsylvania it was $461 but I received in 2 days. Definitely worth the money.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

As far as Sandy we have had steady rain all day. A few good gusts of wind but it should start picking up soon. I'm located in 17872. I live on the side of a mountain so not too worried about flooding but they are closing roads by 9pm.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

I like that stock! I just picked up a 700 ADL Varmint and will loom into that stock for future upgrade. Good price too!

Nice stick. Thanks for posting.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Forgive my ignorance, but what made you choose shots 8, 9, 10 over the 1, 2, 3, 4 node? While it seems that the 8, 9, 10 might have more potential for absolute smallest groups, wouldn't somewhere within the lower node provide more consistent results in a wider variety of temperature and atmospheric conditions?

Or am I way off base and already thinking OCW?

Re: Few additions to rem 700

I am going to mess around with both, but from what i've been reading the vld's like to be pushed. With no signs of overpressure even at 2.5gr over book max I wanna test 8,9,&10 first and see what results are produced. I'm not ruling out 1-4.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Nice stick! How do you like the stock?? I've been wanting to shoot one but haven't had the chance yet

Re: Few additions to rem 700

i just started putting a 243 varmint together recently and have decided on starting load developement with 95 vld's also. did you chronograph any of your loads? and have you tried any other powder besides h4350. thanks a bunch. ill stay tuned in for more

I did not chrono any of these loads yet. I've only made 12 up for that ladder test so far. Didn't try any other powder with them either. I've used Varget before these and had good luck with 80gr nosler's.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

good setup and test. I have that same setup just different cals now. for dedicated mid range guns I love ss scopes.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Nice setup, I have the same rifle in a HS precision stock.
Try some 105gr Hornady Amax. Been the most accurate bullet for me so far.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Got back out Friday and again today.

Did another ladder test and 2 different tests of 5shot groups at 100yrds. (didn't take any pictures of the 2nd ladder test or 5shot groups at 100 to determine powder charge)

Left is previous load. Winchester brass, CCI primers, Nosler 80 gr, 41.8gr Varget, 3.290" head-ogive. Shot well but that was before changing the stock so probably could've shot better with free floating barrel the Medalist provides.

Right is current set up. Winchester Brass, CCI primers, Berger 95gr VLD, 43.7 gr H4350, 3.260" head-ogive.

Had 3 groups of 5shots. One at start of lands, one 0.030" jump and one 0.060" jump. Best was 0.030" jump, but I want to do a few more test groups around that length to see if I can bring it in any more.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Thanks. 0.060" jump really opened up. According to Berger the "sweet spot" could be 0.030-0.040" wide so I'd like to do some more groups like 0.020" jump and 0.040" jump see if there is any difference.

Its killing me too. I don't have a chrono so until I buy one or find some one who has one I won't know. Hodgdon shows 42.0gr max with 95gr and H4350 @ 3087 ft/s. I am at 43.7gr so...? I do my hand loading at a friends on the weekends. I will let you know of the OAL in a couple days when I make some more loads up.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

I got a hold of my friend and he measured. With 0.030" jump I got OAL of 3.840" with 95gr vld's.

i just used my hornady oal gauge and checked my sps v 243. 2.848 is at the lands for me with 95vld's. i can't wait to get this up and running.

Re: Few additions to rem 700

Sorry for the confusion. That was measured with my comparator on since I don't have any made up right now. Did a few measurements and with 0.030" jump I have OAL of 2.831".
