Very new to long range shooting and custom builds. I see a lot of savage, Remington, stiller, tikka sako etc... I haven't seen a lot of Winchester and no browning. Just was wondering why?

Thanks

Re: Why No Brownings?

A-Borts are notorious pot metal pieces of shit,as a best case scenario.

Re: Why No Brownings?

Well, back when both were truly Mauser based, they were customized plenty.

I think after market wise the 700 and savage lines are king along with some custom actions.

Re: Why No Brownings?

Here is a "custom" Browning for you.

Plugged barrel? At least the action held but yikes!

Re: Why No Brownings?

Since the barrel blew from front to back it looks like a plugged barrel to me.

Perhaps a bit extreme. I own 3 A-bolts that I use as hunting rifles. I would say they are slightly above average as a consumer grade, off the shelf, hunting rifle. I would imagine the typical deer hunter could use one for a lifetime without issue. The problem I see is a lack of aftermarket upgrades. Other than throwing in a lighter trigger spring, there isn't much out there. Beyond that, I don't know of any gunsmiths who customize them.

Figured it was something like that. Thanks

Re: Why No Brownings?

I worked on an A-bolt trigger once, they're as weird as the rest of the gun. There's something desirable to be said for simplicity when choosing an action, and Browning avoids simplicity like it's an STD...

I agree - decent hunting rifles, definitely no aftermarket support. I have an A-bolt in 300 WSM I picked up ten years ago. Out of the box, it shoots cheap Winchester hunting ammo at just a hair over 1 moa and has proven reliable every time I hunt. Hard to complain about something that does what I need it to do.

Re: Why No Brownings?

Because Browning always wanted to create a market segment that separated them from the "mundane" crowd of the Winchester and Remnigton users. From a marketing standpoint, they started out pretty good, but in the late 70's and early '80's their marketing schemes, for the most part, brought about their own destruction.

Kind of like trying to take a Weatherby and turning it into an M-40 or something like that.

Re: Why No Brownings?

The A-bolt magazine design is an overly complicated mess. Not a big deal when hunting but I would hate to have one in a tactical situation. The X-bolt is much improved but I think it's too late to turn the corner.

Absolutely agree. It works great for loading up in the morning and leaving the mag in for a day of hunting, but would be very slow to reload under stress. I suspect the floor plate would get snapped off if you got a little aggressive with the seating. Again, no aftermarket bottom metal that would make for straight insertion. Probably best to just use the A-bolt for it's original purpose, hunting, and leave it alone.
