New Build. 7mm SAUM?

So here is the deal. I am wanting to start a build that will suit my LR needs and cover me from hog to elk as far as hunting goes. Research is pointing to the 7mm SAUM as a viable option but am wondering if there are any other ELR capable cartridges I should consider. Have a 338 in the stable already just looking to replace my everyday hunting stick.

Thanks!

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

I have a 7wsm, 7saum 35* shoulder, and just finishing up a 7mm/300win mag. Just use a 300win Redding type S bushing die. Berger 180 Hybrid's going 3150fps. It should be nice.

Speeds of my guns.
7wsm Berger 180vld's 2975fps
7Saum Berger 168vld's 3160fps
7/300win Berger Hybrid ???? Hoping 3100-3150

More info.

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

Appreciate the info! Yeah, those berger vlds are what I am wanting to shoot. And the planning begins...

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

Love mine

Spits berger 180's out @ 3100 without breaking a sweat.

Id recommend going with a long action if you plan on using a mag. Those 180's are l o n g!

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

So here is what I am thinking

KMW Sentinel
Surgeon 1086
Broughton Barrel in #7.7
Huber Concepts Trigger

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

not a bad combo, lol. i've got two sentinels and thinking about changing the stocks on a couple of my other guns to sentinels

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

I built one too...probably should have went with a short action, but it shoots the 168's fine.

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

I had mine built in a LA/BDL and its likes 180 and 168 Bergers. Specs are:

- 7mm RSAUM set to load long with 162/168/180 grain bullets
- #5 Brux stainless steel barrel, 1:9 twist, fluted, finished at +/-25"
- Stiller Predator LA
- Timney trigger
- Manners TA BDL stock
- RAD removable brake (and thread cover)
- target was 8.5lbs w/o optics and came in at 9.2lbs (w/bipod)

After shooting it a bit the things I would do different are:

- shorten barrel to 21-22". Maybe even 20". Would improve balance and make carrying easier and I am not sure the loss in FPS would effect the distances I hunt/shoot at.
- I would use a slightly larger contour to add a titch more weight overall. When shooting with the brake it is great but when the brake is off it jumps allot more...

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

Gorgeous rifle Overflow! And yeah so long as I can pack her into a bag, weight won't bother me. Wonder though, really think you could cut her down that far and retain stability? Guess I am thinking with how long these guys are, having that extra length on the lands and bearing surfaces to fully stabilize?

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

Marc Soulie at Spartan Rifles built this one for me. He told me about another 7RSAUM he built for a customer who specced it at 20" barrel. Apparently it is a laser to 1K. I thought about shortening mine but I had already purchased the fluted barrel.

So I do not think the issue would be stabilizing the bullet. As long as you have an acceptable twist. Along as I could spit 168s out at 2850 or higher I think my hunting needs would be just fine. So 3-4 inches shorter is probably no problem. But 168s at 3150 has a certain appeal too....

Maybe give Marc a shout or PM and get his input?

Re: New Build. 7mm SAUM?

Skyking:

Forgive my ignorance, but it seems the 7SAUM, 7WSM and 7/300WSM are really, really close to one another...

Whats the reason you've got three different cartridges that overlap so much and are so similar?

Please don't think I'm criticizing, I'm really just curious on your take concerning the differences, pros and cons of those 3 chamberings! Any/all info, data and opinions welcome!
