Giraud: color me impressed

I don't shoot enough to buy a Giraud. Between my buddy and I, we shoot enough and HATE trimming / chamfering / deburring enough that when one came up for sale, I asked him if wanted to go halfsies and we got ourselves an almost new Giraud for about the same price as an RCBS Trim Pro (with motor).

Well I finally used it today to trim 200 pieces of 223 Rem brass that I am prepping for my bolt action. I took a few minutes to familiarize myself with the trimmer. It was currently set up for 308, but it took me 5 mins to change the cutter and case holder to the 223. I installed a Hornady Die Lock Ring to make caliber changes easier in the future. Took me 2 mins to get it exactly setup to trim to 1.750.

I trimmed 200 pieces in 17 mins. This includes checking quite a few for length as I went along. It was within +/- 0.001 each and every time.

I have 800 pieces of 223 left to process and about 1400 pieces of 308 that I need to rerun through a body die (did not setup my die correctly and need to bump the shoulders on all of hem to be sure). Trimming will definitely not be the chore it used to be. Heck I can trim / chamfer / debur faster than I can FL size the brass.

Definitely the best investment I have ever made.

I squealed at the price and then finally made the move. After using it once, I asked my self, why did wait this long? Even if you dont on one, you should be allowed to go a neighbors house and use his.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

I just bought a used one as well. But in all fairness I have used other peoples and knew just how awesome they were.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

Yeah it has definitely improved my disposition on trimming.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

It'll go back and forth between my buddy and I. We shoot together every couple of weeks so definitely not an inconvenience. I can get all of my brass prepped while the trimmer is at his place. Takes me WAY longer to do all the other prep stages. Trimming will only take a couple of hours depending on how much I have to do. Once I get this batch done, I'll only be looking at hundreds and not thousands of brass.

I have infant twins at home so anything that can speed up the process is a win in my book.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

I've always wondered how awesome these things are. I guess I shouldn't use one unless I want to spend the coin on one huh?

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

The Giraud Trimmer was one of the items that I purchased and after trying it once I don't know why I didn't buy it sooner as it saved so much time from reloading chores I hate the most. It was money very well spent. I couldn't do with out anymore I am that hooked.

I also took off the supplied lock ring on the shell holder and replaced it with a locking die ring. I don't know why Doug doesn't supply a locking ring for the shell holders. It's sure nice to change to a complete new caliber and be ready to trim in under two minutes.

Doug does recommend them, but I agree, they should just come with them. Which reminds, I need to order a few more.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

Anyone have the annealing machine? I've been considering one. I normally use the drill/torch method, but not I've got 3 or 4 gallon ziplock bags filled with cleaned/trimmed brass with 3 or 4 hits on them all needing to be annealed, and the machine is sounding really, really, really good.

Based on the excellence of his trimmer, I can only assume the annealing setup is also excellent....?

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

Got the trimmer AND the annealer. Both are top notch. Next yall need to head over to 427Cobra's and try out the Prometheus Gen 2 and you will see something just as impressive. Once you try any of these tools, you never want to go back. :)

I've not actually heard anything about it. My buddy and I are thinking about one and did see the product page for his.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

Its hard to explain to someone who doesn't have one how great they really are because they can't get past the price of it.

Once you use it though, any thoughts of its cost go out the window because you can't believe how fast you just trimmed 100 cases and the smile is priceless

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

the giraud trimmer and annealer are on my short list, I have had my hands on both and quality and ease of operation is fantastic.
Price tag is high but if you look at how much you spend on a quality rifle, the cost of tools to feed them quality ammo makes sense.

Re: Giraud: color me impressed

The cost of ownership of Giraud products is almost zero, because they hold their value so well.

Pretty much - kind of like the Dillon Super Swage for primer pocket swaging on mil brass. Now that I have both, I can't imagine wanting to deal with brass prep without them.
