Any advice?

I am having a very difficult time locating a one piece picatinny rail adapter for the tapered dovetail mounts on a sako 75V. I might have to use the 2 piece set that is in the picture. There is only one option provided with the Optilocks in 34mm and they do not have a 20moa tilt.

My concern is this;
The 2 pc adapters are locked into place with a very firm sharp smack with a piece of hardwood and then the recoil will further set the adapters. Yes, believe it or not this is the method advised by the manufacturer, NO set screws.
Using separate adapters will provide an uneven torque on the scope body when the recoil fully sets the adapters? Possibly crimping the tube or at least distorting the erector lens set.
The last thing that I want to do is damage my brand new fully loaded SN3 !

Re: Sako 75 separate scope rings ?

If you don't absolutely need 20 degrees, I would simply use a pair of Leupold 30mm rings. They work very well.

Re: Sako 75 separate scope rings ?

Sako's dual dovetail system has been in place for a LONG time.
It works fine.
I have owned numerous Sakos and never had an issue whatsoever.
It is hard to tell from viewing on phone, but those look like Warnes
They work very well.
As do the Talleys and Leupolds.
We have two Sakos in the family, both from the early 60s
They both shoot .5" 200 yard groups.

Don't worry about it.

If you are willing to drill & tap your receiver, Near Mfg. makes a very good picatinney rail for Sako 75 and Sako 85 actions.

His machine work is flawless!!

@ Buckey - I am waiting for a response from Near.
@ ccoker - there is only one option for the 34mm Optilock rings and they do not have the liner-ring to protect the scope tube.

edit - I have a set of Spuhr picitinny rings that I was hoping to use.

Tahoe,

Not sure if you're waiting for a return email??

I found it better to call instead of emailing Richard Near when ordering or inquiring about his stuff - he usually answers the phone.

Hope this helps!!

Wow! Really? I guess there's the answer for accuracy.

I use the Optilocks but I think the Leupold bases may look better. Burris also makes bases that might work. The Optilocks are a little high and the Leupold and Burris bases look like they may be a little lower.

I'm talking 2 piece bases. Others may be able to advise on a rail.

I must be missing something but I have never been able to understand those advising clamping on rings (such as Warne) to the tapered dovetail. Surely there would be stressed on the scope from the uneven grip the rings would have on the Sako receiver. Maybe I can learn something here...

Re: Sako 75 separate scope rings ?

Good luck with Near,-- the last time I talked to him, a couple of years ago, he had quit making 75/85 bases, only made TRG rails. Otherwise, I would own a couple of his. If you discover that he is again making rails for the tapered dovetails, then I want a couple.

If they had screws (which would require drilling and tapping the receiver), or just a couple of set screws, then I would think that the IOR bases would be OK, although the two-pieceness trashes the Picatinny spacing.

Any bases which are properly machined to fit on the tapered dovetails will be self-centering and likely to work. The Optilocks are not, and don't. The front base is centered, but the rear base is cut too wide, and is held in place by the clamping screw, off-center, so they intrinsically cause windage issues.

Burris standard bases work well, and with Burris Signature rings, you can get 20 moa slant. I have used them on .308/.30-06 rifles, with 30 oz. scopes and they held fine with a firm tap or two and the set screws torqued as much as I dared.

Roedale Precision used to make a very good Picatinny rail to fit either Long or Short actions, and the last time I checked, they were "in manufacture" but since then the 20 moa version has disappeared from their Web Store. It would be worth an email to check the status.
Edit to Add: On a short action, with a short, big scope in low rings, then there can be a collision between the objective bell and the front of the (relatively long) Roedale rail.

Good luck. They are wonderful rifles.

Here is picatinny one piece rail that fits your gun.
Recknagel is of very high quality and I have used loads of their detachable huntingmounts with very good results.

The other option is to use Sako Optilocks.
If you turn off just a tiny bit betwen the frontring and the base on optilocks you can get any tilt you like.

How I would solve it?
I would sell that gun and buy a Tikka T3 instead:)

Re: Sako 75 separate scope rings ?

I spoke with Near and he is making me a new setup that he said has been inside his head for a very long time. I am very relieved that he is going to make me a mount. Cant wait!
