Re: 6.5 grendel

Im digging the red details on the side. I usually dont like flash on my guns, but that really makes the rig look slick

Yea when i got it together it looked like something was missing so after some brain storming i decided to do the color fill on the lower. It definitely brought out the look that i wanted.

I added a three shot group picture. I shot this when i had that barrel on my old upper with just a mil-spec receiver and bolt carrier with no adjustable gas block and a nikon buckmaster 6X18-40. I'll post progress as soon as i can get a day off of work and make it to the range.

Re: 6.5 grendel

Absolutely, it took me a few months of research before i settled on that caliber for my build. It has great ballistics.

It loves 123 gr Hornday but im trying some different loads. I had a friend of mine load up some 140 gr nosslers bt hp. I'm curious to see how they perform.

What kind of speeds are you seeing? My father in law has the exact same Grendel I do, the only difference being his is 18 and mines 24 (built them together). With the same loads I generally see around 200FPS more but AA says they don't get any more from a longer barrel and recommended sticking to 18" - 24". So I'm really curious what you're seeing.

I'm getting 2816 out of factory hornady 123 gr A max on the chronograph.

Whoa, I have a very similar load and get 2865FPS out of it. So it looks like Alexander Arms (AA) is right in that there's no advantage to going any longer than 24". I mean, there's clearly an advantage to going with 24" over an 18" at least in terms of speed (200FPS more) but your 28" is actually slower (which is what AA says). Now that's not to say it has to be but you're going to have to play with your loads (assuming you reload) to really get an advantage out of that 28" barrel. Let me know if you want some load help, this was the trickiest gun to work up a load for.

The reason I chose the 28" barrel for this build is for maximum speed and bullet stability. When I ordered this barrel, I had no data to support the theory of more speed from the longer barrel but have hopes of achieving this with the right load combination. I haven't had time to load and field test to get some hard numbers but hopefully in the near future I'll know more. If it turns out that I'm wrong I'll just take it and have it cut down. Just out of curiosity, what kind of accuracy are y'all getting out of the shorter barrels?

My father in laws 18" is more accurate than my 24" but I attribute that to me having to tweak my loads more than he did. I still haven't found a load it really likes but I'm probably expecting more than it can realistically deliver.

Hmmm, well the Grendel is typically a very accurate cartridge if you use quality components even with factory ammo. I get a stray round every once in a while but it almost always holds to a .75 group or less and i have shot several groups that were .50 and under.

Re: 6.5 grendel

Man, I would not want to be on the receiving end of your fire. I've read the 6.5 x 38mm is a really accurate round.

Yea, I know a few people that have the Grendel and read about many other shooters that use them and like you said it has a reputation for accuracy.

Re: 6.5 grendel

coldsteel77,

Great looking rifle. I went back and forth with a bunch of rounds for a step up in the AR-15 platform and finally decided on the 6.5G.
Not a 'super' round as a lot would have people believe. But, it does a bang up job within the parameters of that platform. Both of mine were 24" barrels. I was getting, according to drops, about 2750 with 123 SMK's. I used 29 gr. of IMR 8208 XBR for that. The cool thing was I didn't have to change between Summer and Winter loads like I did with AA2520.
