I have Glocks, 1911's, etc....but when i just want to enjoy shooting i find myself reaching for a plain old S&W revolver. Prefer something made in the 70's or older.

while the young guys are holding their blasters side ways at the indoor range...the middle age fat man just shoots tiny little groups with his old guns. And then there is this annoying sign at the local range that says brass on the floor belongs to the store. so i enjoy shooting my revolvers even more because i take all the brass back home to be reloaded again..

Anybody else enjoy shooting revolvers?

Re: Who likes revolvers?

i got my first this year, a ruger redhawk in 44 mag 7 incher, love shooting it, i can hit smaller steel plates at longer distances than i ever could with my 1911's just not half as fast tho... i shoot it single action and pull the hammer back after every shot... i hate the double action trigger, probly cause i am so used to my 1911's and my XD's

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Dan Wesson .44 mag and a Dan Wesson .445 Supermag.
I want a Colt Peacemaker and a Ruger Vaquero.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I love shooting .38 wadcutters out of my old model 66.

I think it's the simplicity of the recoil that makes me enjoy it so much.

I'm not really into them for 'practical' purposes though.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Yes, sir really enjoy accurate shooting with the Python 6"
something relaxing and,,, retro- about it...

Re: Who likes revolvers?

S&W K-22 masterpiece is one of my favorites to take to the range, followed closely by S^W Model 19 w/ 2" barrel (another with a 6" barrel), and several pre model 29 44 magnums (4" and 6" barrel), plus a double handful of others. They're all fun.
A second generation Colt SAA in .45 Colt is a real hoot too.

When I've taught new shooters in the past, women especially, they take to the .357 magnum Model 19 with handloaded rounds like fish to water. Deep black finish, rosewood grips, BIG powder flash and bang. Power. Fun.

But if some of them break, fixing them may be hellaciously expensive. Fifteen years ago I sent my 1957 S&W .44 magnum to S&W for a broken hand and some timing/action work. I was told at that time that I got the LAST hand in the factory for that gun. Interesting the labor/parts came to about $175 and turnaround was two weeks.

I can't imagine what this might cost today, much less who might have parts, so some of these guns see daylight once a year or less.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Revolvers remain great even if the thickness of a pistol helps with concealed carry.

Love my lightweight S&W 44 Special....its just too big to be my every day carry hardware.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Have a S&W 19-2 and an old colt. Somethings never go out of style. There is nothing better than old Smith. Shoot one sometime and see what I mean.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

My first handgun was my Dan Wesson 15-2 .357 with 6" barrel. After it was broken in, at about 500 rounds, it puts everything in one ragged hole at 25 yds and I often use it to ring the 50 and 100 yd steel. With .38 wadcutters, I've won a few challenges against slabside pistols over the years.

Since then I've added many and very much enjoy the recoil roll of a single action like my Ruger Super Blackhawk .44.

To this day here in Florida and in Michigan I prefer to hunt with a handgun, often one of the above.

There are still occasions when I prefer to carry my S&W snub as it does conceal well with the round buttstock.

So yes, you could say I like revolvers. However, I still mostly shoot matches with and carry semis.

I would agree that there is some thing simplistic and satisfying about shooting a revolver. Maybe it's just all the old westerns I watched growing up. Who knows?

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I love to shoot revolvers, but would much rather carry for personal protection an auto loader. but for hunting...i love my model 29

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I love a wheel gun. Watched my dad win a many a matches
back in the 70's and early 80's.
My first wheel gun was a S&W 586 4" 357/38.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I've got a Taurus snubbie .357 that I use for CC; brushed stainless, low profile hammer. Beautiful piece! I particularly love the fact that I could drop it in a creek, pick it up and give it a shake and the thing would still be working.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I have more revolver than auto's but not by much, 9 to 8.
somthing about double action and fixed barrel.
yep, I am a big SW revolver fan, don't carry them but shoot the hell out of them.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I am very fond of my revolvers. Have carried my GP100 .357 on many an adventure. I like the way it kills stuff. after trigger work, it is the gun I will give a new shooter because it's just really easy to shoot well. Something to be said for simplicity of operation, rugged construction and I happen to love the way they handle.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Nothing will ever replace my 1911s, but I have owned a number of revolvers over the years. Sold/trade most of them and didn't touch a wheel gun for probably 15 years. One day I see this 625 at the LGS. Bought it on a whim and several more since. Don't shoot them a lot, maybe 2K combined each year, but they are a fun switch from time to time.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Real Cops carry revolvers.

My Model 28 Service Revolver. Dept gave me the gn when I retired. Makes a great bowling pin gun.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

my grandfather is giving me his old service revolver, first thing thats happening is its goin away to get the attention it deserves from heirloom precision. love shooting revolovers with trigger jobs.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

While I like my 1911's there is nothing better than shooting a wheel gun.

I wish I had never sold my 686 I built of NRA Action Pistol

Re: Who likes revolvers?

There's a lot to like about a revolver.

For concealed carry in the pocket, their 3D shape (as opposed to an automatic's 2D slabsided profile) looks more natural. God forbid you were ever in the scenario - the muzzle can be pressed hard, right up against a target with no concern of it going "out of battery".

I really enjoy my SW617. Fires 10 rounds of any kind of 22 ammo you want to run through it, be it shotshells, shorts, longs, stingers, SSS's, or even super colibri's. I can't think of any gun that will "cycle" ANY kind of ammo like the wheelgun can.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Not your usual setup but been having great success experimenting with my Freedom Arms 10" 44mag with a VGM mount and a 2 1/2 -8 scope shooting out to 500 yards on steel with the 240gr Hornady XTP with 24gr of IMR 4227. Amazing how accurate these things are even falling out of the sky like a rock. Easier to hit a target lying flat on the ground than one standing up at that distance.

Have always preferred revolvers in my old IHMSA silhouette days and also hunting and for experimenting like this. Just something about the sound of the cylinder cycling and hanging a revolver out there and seeing how powerful and accurate they can be.

Next to my lil Buckmark my Old faithful SSK Ruger SBH in 44mag is one of my favorite go to guns. Just a pure joy to shoot and also extremely accurate.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

My first H-G my dad bought me for 21st birthday was S&W 586 6". I still have it to this day, box and all. I can put that away for two years, come back to it, set sights on target and 25yds and under it is either one ragged hole, or not far from it!

To have a less-expensive to shoot companion, I got a 617 6", and it also is AMAZING to shoot! Whatever my semi-auto 22's don't like, I feed to this one!!

Wheelguns, particularly blued ones and for me preferably S&W revolvers have a very special place in my heart! They are more of a fun gun at the range, as I carry 1911 or Glock daily. But....if someone told me I had to carry a S&W 625(HAD one few years ago & miss it!

) at work and carry a 642 off-duty/ccw - I wouldn't cry too badly about it!

Re: Who likes revolvers?

First handgun I ever shot was a Ruger security six when I was 12 years old and been hooked on revolers ever since.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I've got three revolvers now, all heirlooms. My first revolver was from my great grandfather on my mother's side. He was a police officer in Peoria, IL back in the 30s and 40s (and a veteran of WWI). He had nice taste in pistols, as he carried this fine piece on the beat:

Smith & Wesson 38-44 HD:

My second revolver was from my dad's dad, who passed in 2003. He had this S&W 38 SPL that he loved to shoot:

2ytpp9w.jpg

The gun has had the barrel replaced and been reblued, but value doesn't matter to me. It's my gun, and it will be my son's gun when I die.

Finally, I just got my dad's revolver, an Uberti 357 SA. As pistols go, this one leaves a lot to be desired. Ahhh, if only my dad had an equivalent appreciation of guns as he did cars, this may have been a Colt Python. Nonetheless, this Uberti is where I learned to shoot handguns. It's got incredible sentimental value, and it's still a reliable shooter.

Now I'm out to get a revolver of my own. I'm loving some of the guns coming out of the S&W Performance Center. I'll likely snag a 44 Mag from them when I get the chance.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

The most fun I have is when I'm shooting a single-action .22 revolver. I have .357's and .44's but the single-action .22 just feels very zen. Btw I wouldn't patronize a range that steals my brass!

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Yeah, I've never shot at a range that claimed any brass that touched the floor was theirs. Bad form, in my opinion.

To PowderBurns' point, I recently got to shoot my uncle's High Standard Citation and loved it. We had some steel set up at 35 yards and you could ring that gong every time with that Citation. You've got to love the .22s.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Carried a Ruger SP101 for years as a backup, and as my undercover weapon too. The Glock just screamed "cop".

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I do not enjoy autos, the only thing that I own, shoot, carry, and compete with are revolvers.

Collection:

4 3/8" Colt SAA (1956)
6" Colt peacemaker 22lr/mag
2" Colt Cobra

6" Smith model 27
3" Smith 3-5-7 Talos (686+)

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Last year I had hand surgery. Mississippi inaugurated an "enhanced" carry permit that removed almost all restrictions from where you can carry. Had to take a course and fire some 400 rounds. Well, with diminished hand strength, I took it with my shorty S&W 65. After going through all the instruction, we went to the range for practice drills. A huge amount of that was teaching the auto guys the drill for clearing stoppages. The instructor just turned to me and told me to just shoot all I wanted to while they were practicing the drills. One of the guys whined, "Why doesn't he have to practice?" With a chuckle the instructor told him that."All he has to do is bend his trigger finger again." What a hoot!

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I've got an old Nagant which is fun to play with. And I just traded for a S&W 629 PowerPort with 6.5" barrel, and a tasco pro point on it. Deer season opens Thursday, I can smell thier fear from here!! Now to find a holster for it. I would prefer something I can wear on my hip as compared to a bandolier style. Any suggestions guys? So far no luck with my Google-Fu!

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Simply Rugged has a bunch of nice revolver holster options.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I have been running Lobo Gunleather holsters for all of my wheel guns. Been very happy so far. =)

Re: Who likes revolvers?

I have a 642, 4" Model 66 no dash, 6" model 629 no dash, and a 4 5/8" stainless Black Hawk 45lc/acp convertible.

I love me some stainless revolvers. Best looking guns. Period.

A 617 is on the short list.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

This is my one pistol so far that I will always regret selling.

1999 manufacture (old built like a tank frame) Ruger Vaquero .357 Mag that was set up by a professional cowboy action shooter down here in Texas. It started as a special edition gun and came with the 9mm cylinder. The finish was "antiqued", it had a complete action and trigger job, custom fitted brass frame and it was the most accurate, easy to shoot handgun I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Looked sexy as hell too.

I am curious about that sign at your range though. I can understand brass left behind by others but have they ever tried to stop you from picking up your own brass? That's your property no matter what they say.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

They are afraid that some dumbo will be bent over picking up brass and wander out in front of the firing line while it is live. Just covering their butts.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

While I am firmly entrenched in the semi auto world, and I will never leave it, at competitions I enjoy watching revolver shooters the most. I have the greatest respect for them and I am in awe when I watch them.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

And as I walkout the front door my 638 is in my right hand pocket of my jeans. It's Sunday and the Glock 19 needs a day off

Re: Who likes revolvers?

Those flat noses have got to have some thud to them!

Good god man are those all k-22s? jealous. The k-22s seem to appreciate even faster than the larger bore smiths.

Re: Who likes revolvers?

The only center fire handguns I own are revolvers. Most of those are S&W. Here are my two most valued.
S&W Pre 17 with a 3 digit serial number

Wow, that Registered Magnum is a work of art! You've got fine taste in wheelguns.

Shooting4life those are two great pieces. I'd love to have a registered.

Got that right, I have several revolvers, but I really like my Nagant.

Totally useless but a heck of a lot of fun to play with, 400 lb DA trigger pull is something to behold.

One of the next multi gun matches I shoot, I'm gonna shoot it with my Nagant and Mosin. Wont win, but I'm gonna have fun.

Though with good hand loads they can be "almost" accurate.

This was shot at 50 ft. (Single action of course).
