Hello all, called Leupold but the wait was 30-72 minutes all week. I'm wanting to know why the MKIV 10x40 M3 is more expensive than the 3.5-10x40 M3, why does the 10x40 have caps instead of target knobs like the 3.5-10x40 and will either one of these scopes get a 308 to 1,000 yards with a zero cant Badger rail. Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

The Leupold Mark4 fixed series of scopes are descended from the Leupold Ultra series that were issued to the US Military. I can't speak to the price difference but if I remember correctly the fixed power scopes have a thicker main tube which could have a little to do with it. The caps are to cover the low profile elevation, windage, and parallax knobs which is a carry over from the M24's Leupold M3A. Fixed Mk4's are available with standard 1/4 MOA M1 turrets but as far as I know there are no other turret options. The fixed Mk4 will probably get you to 1000 yards on a flat base but the variable power Mk4 will almost certainly require a tapered base. Hope this information helps.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

I shot out to 1000 yards with an M24 and the M3 Ultra scope in SOTIC. It's not easy, but can be done. I think I hit 3 out of 10 shots, but with me it always got iffy past 600 yards.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

18E,

I greatly preferred the M3A to the PVS-10..what a POS that was.

To the OP,

I forgot to mention that the Leupold Mk4 fixed power scopes have a BDC elevation knob for several different NATO cartridges. This combined with the 1 MOA per click makes it really less than ideal for long range work when going for targets that are less than man-sized.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

Just remember with the 1 MOA adjustments that you don't have the ability to fine tune like you will with the M1 Knobs. So you are going to do a whole lot more favoring and holding with the M3

I'm getting a new scope here soon, and have decided on the Mk4 ER/T 4.5-14 x 50 with M5 turrets. I get a crazy discount from promotive.

TM, I think after we zeroed that POS we took it off and let it collect dust in the weapons locker. As bad as the PVS-10 was, that thermal scope (forget the nomenclature) was an even bigger and bulkier POS. It was like having a lunch box attached to your rifle.

Does the 10x40 M3 come with the knobs? My main concern is I've already bought a zero MOA Badger rail and I want to get out to 1,000 yards. If there's any other options I've overlooked, I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

I think the M3 comes with BDC's for .223, .308, and .300 win. But to match it you have to be shooting the same ammo that the rings are calibrated for. The M3 is fine for minute-of-man.

Will the 10x40 M3 get a 308 to 1000 yards with a zero moa base? I've read they don't need a tapered base, but I don't know.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

Hell you can shoot your gun 1000 yds with iron sights, but you won't be able to hit anything you're shooting at. I would dump your flat rail a get a 20-30 MOA cant base and a variable scope with 20-24X top end and be done with it. We all know that will work. Why are you trying to reinvent the wheel ?

Re: Leupold MKIV help

I'd look for something with at least 15x on the top end and knobs/reticule matching. Under a grand there's the Vortex PST lineup and the Weaver first focal scopes, and you can find the super sniper 5-20s right at a grand used.

If you need a canted base you can cross that bridge when you get there, the thing about long range shooting is that it's expensive and all trial and error figuring out what works for you.

</div></div> Try ordering through Leupold, you still get the same discount but a lot of people say it's faster than going through Promotive.

My experience was similar, you can do it ,just don't expect a first time hit on a e-type target;more scope would have been nice and probably made it easier to do consistently IMO.

I believe you are correct, I recall reading that the M3 on the M24 was was set up for use specifically with M118 and M885.

To the OP, I'd second what you've already been told, get a variable power scope above 10x if you want to ping targets at the 1k mark with confidence, especially if your targets are smaller than an E-type.

Re: Leupold MKIV help

Honestly, if you are set on a 10 power scope I would save a few hundred dollars and get a Super Sniper fixed 10 power w/ the rear parallax. Sell your 0 cant base for what you can get for it and then buy a 20 moa base with the money you saved buying the SS.

Another thing about the 10 power, I could never read the trace on my 1000 yard shots so I would have been lost without my sniper buddy spotting for me and giving me corrections. I suppose thats not important though if you are shooting steel and get get back some auditory feedback on hits....
