My experience was similar, you can do it ,just don't expect a first time hit on a e-type target;more scope would have been nice and probably made it easier to do consistently IMO.

I believe you are correct, I recall reading that the M3 on the M24 was was set up for use specifically with M118 and M885.
To the OP, I'd second what you've already been told, get a variable power scope above 10x if you want to ping targets at the 1k mark with confidence, especially if your targets are smaller than an E-type.
