How is Albuquerque?

wherever I may roam...
I have just submitted for an assignment in Albuquerque, and am wondering just how bad the winters are there. I will be living out of my 5th wheel travel trailer, so any truthful info on how bad the winters are is appreciated. I really don't care to much about the cold, but my pregnant wife and 2yr old son will be along and these RV's aren't the best insulated.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Eric

Re: How is Albuquerque?

I have family there, so my experience has been back and forth over the years. It snows in the winter, but it's not cold like the northern states. It'll get a bit below zero at night in the winter, but it's a short season.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

Weather is nice but and when it snows it's gone pretty quick. You'll have some cold nights in a trailer but for the most part you'll be fine.

FYI: I hate the city. I spent my first 20 years there and am glad I escaped. It's a hell-hole of crime and poverty and if I didn't own land there, I'd never go back. I had cars stolen & broken into, guns pulled on me/shot at, burglars, guns stolen, hit by drunk drivers (huge problem down there#1 in the nation), girlfriend was car jacked and the car showed up 3 days later with a freshly dead heroine OD in the backseat, and a ton of other bad experiences. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

There area few good things, such as Sandia crest and shooting out on the west mesa. The food is awesome and it has a good food scene. Order everything 'Christmas' and you'll be in good shape. Make sure to eat at the hole in the wall places that look rat infested (Taquerias) their the best food in town (not kidding). Other than that, sunsets are awesome everyday but get used to keeping an eye on your stuff and plan on loosing a lot of it. Albuquerque has the 2nd highest gang population per capita in the U.S. so that's fun and if you don't already, learn how to speak Spanish, it's almost the primary language there I grew up with it so it came natural but a non-native will have a much easier time in the Duke city knowing at least conversational Spanish.

Wow. What a near-blanket condemnation. Unfortunately, that's the same picture painted by just about everything that I've seen and read.

Heading there on the 26th of December. I'm gonna finish my BS degree and apply for APD. And no, I'm not joking. It's a toss up between trying for border patrol or APD.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

APD and border patrol is one in the same there due to the drug and human trafficking routes. I have been there for 9 month door gunner training and have seen the yotes out at night while flying for training doing drug runs.

Place is nice in Nob Hill and Red Rio and food is great. The hill has some very open minded women up for anything.

I still have a lot of family there. My uncle is APD and likes it but man he's got some really fucked up stories (way worse than the shit I've seen in ABQ). I think it's a good unit APD has going down there and I even considered it way back in a different life but the plain fact is that it's just a loosing battle, just too much crime and they're relegated to just mopping up the aftermath. The best cops I ever encountered (and I've encountered a lot of them) were APD cops as they all had the all-too-rare ability to empathize with non-cops.

Bear in mind: There's a reason why nearly every episode of the show 'COPS' is/was filmed in Albuquerque (saw a guy I went to high school with get arrested on COPS once LOL).

Re: How is Albuquerque?

Fuckaround Charlie Brown!!! That bad of a plce? Might have to find somwhere outside of city to parrk the rv, and drive to work. I guess its a good thing momma shoots too.
Hopefully they wont like my old 93 Dodge, momma's Lexus might be another story.
Should be an adventure, if I get and accept the assignment.
Anyone else care to add?
Thanks
Eric

^^During the day yes, but that part of town goes to shit at night, though everyone must brave Central/UNM area to visit the Frontier restaurant at midnight (what a show that is).

Re: How is Albuquerque?

There's no way I would live in Santa Fe (it's only a hour from Abq BTW). Way to many stuckup artsy farts Aholes there. Albuquerque isn't THAT bad and lived in the shit hole south valley for 18 years.

Sad truth is if your gonna be living out of the 5th wheel your probably gonna be stuck with one of the crappier parts of town.
If your going to get land for yourself try Rio Rancho. Depending on how far out you go, it can be a 30-60 min commute to the base.

Albuquerque is really intermixed with good and bad parts of town. Feel free to pm me and I can draw you a map of the parts of town to avoid.

If your outdoors people you'll have stuff to keep you entertained "for a while". If not, don't expect any real excitement from the city.

Lastly if you can get something in TX, go there instead.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

Abq sucks worse than Highbinder says!!!!

If you must go and will be staying in your 5th wheel I would say go south down I-25 and look at Los Lunas and make the drive daily. Probably find a better/cheaper place to park your trailer and definitely less drug/crime/BS in that area.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

I did some work there. Only for a few months, but poverty was high. Lots of dilapidated buildings and 1/2 done construction sites. I did not like it, but I was not there long either (3 months).

Re: How is Albuquerque?

will possibly be taking an assignment at a hospital, 13 weeks is the standard, but who knows.
Thanks for all the heads up info on the crime, like I said I'm moving with my pregnant wife and 2 year old son. So all this intel is of good value. Don't know what shift yet or where the hospital is located, but they are usually in shitty neighborhoods.

You're 99% going to be at University Hospital so make sure your car is a beater or buy a total beater just for that neighborhood and don't leave any valuables in your car. Your best bet would to take the stereo out of the car because often times the cost of replacing the window is more than the stereo or just leave your windows down.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

My mother lives there. She has bars on her windows and carries everywhere she goes. She tells me crime is bad.

Also do not stop on the Apache Indian Reservations if you are white. I guess they still hold a grudge against the white man.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

HB

I think my daily driven 93 Dodge 1 ton may already qualify as a beater, but will def pull the face off the Alpine.

Good call. Removable faceplates were made for towns like Albuquerque in mind and on that same note I found that not having tinted windows is better because you want them to be able to see that you don't have anything rather than go through the process of breaking out your window just to find you have nothing, costing you a new window. Plus breaking out a tinted window is easier and silent compared to a non-tinted window so tinted cars are easier targets.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

Yeah, the window shatters but the glass comes out in a nice sheet stuck to the tint.lol
Will just have to get a lock box for my pistol to put in the console, bolted through the floor. As I don't go anywhere without something.

Re: How is Albuquerque?

I make it there once a year. The food IS great.

A couple of oddies I noticed:

The Hamas Mtns seem under utilized. One can find a beautiful vacation property for a reasonable price however a acre sized mini-landfill plot on the side of HWY 40 is a million dollars.

ABQ property values are crazy.

Hahaha...It boggles my mind why anybody would ever want to live in shit holes such as this.

I'm afraid I'd be in for a rude awakening should I, hypothetically, ever leave ND. I'd be dead or without possessions in a week or less. I like living under my rock that is ND.

Jamez Mtns (no H) is where our land is and it's actually an old volcano where the Jamez Pueblo Indians made tons of arrowheads that have been found all over the US, Canada and down in to South America. It was basically a major arrowhead factory. The mountains of NM are really the state's only redeeming factor.

Well I'll be living by north east heights in High Desert so hopefully crime won't be too bad.

A better history lesson then I received from my Resident friends. Jamez, I knew that
blush.gif
! I have hiked through the Sandia Peak too and rode the tourist tram-tram. Every year I would like to spend more time exploring but most of the crew rather play golf. Most of the local people I have met are super nice folks.

To the topic trend; a friend there owns a furnature store and has become mostly armed security for his employees and has new stories every time....

Beautiful country you have there High Binder. If you have any ideas for cool places to explore next time I am there (probably April) please let me know.

The Sandias (watermelon in Spanish) are pretty neat but you've already done that and the tram is cool once or twice (my uncle worked for the tram and rode up the tram on top of the car once with us in it FUCKING CRAZY!) anyway, don't do that. I dunno if you're into tours but Kirtland Air force base has some really cool museums on it and you might be able to arrange a tour of Sandia labs but they'd probably only show you the coke machine in the lobby. Honestly, I'd try to get out of ABQ and head about 50 mins north and hit Santa Fe, it's a pretty nice drive and once there you can tour tons of art gallery's and eat at some really nice places. Resist the urge to buy any crap form the people around the plaza, most of the turquoise is fake. Santa Fe is pretty touristy so it's a fake look at real NM but it's probably the best the state has to offer. Now if you want to get away from people, you can head up towards Jamez and off to your left you'll see a giant volcano core, the core remains but the softer dirt on the outside has eroded away. You can climb this thing (it's named Cabezon) and it's pretty damn cool. It's a very mild climb, no ropes or any of that but good tennis shoes and jeans, etc. it'll take you the better part of a day to go up and back but I think you get a view of several states from the top. Outside of that I'd probably concentrate on eating as much good Mexican food as I could get my hand on and make sure no matter what you do that you stop and eat at a local pizza/salad chain called Dions, you'll thank me and make sure you also stop into a LottaBurger and get a burger, it's just a right-of-passage and where the locals eat.

Cabezon!

Friends always talk about some hot bewbie spring baths. Whether a fear of impending sausage fest or just a story I don't know.

I'm going to that Cabezon.

Ohh God, food. Don't add to it.

There are a ton of hot springs in NM but most of them are on reservation land and the most popular boobie one your friends are probably talking about was shut down by the Indians because people were trashing it but really any hot springs is going to have a fair share of naked people in it. There's also a resort-ish place where you can go stay where everyone is naked, I forget the name but I've been there many times, it's up by Taos somewhere and they have 4 different mineral waters that all converge right there.

On the subject of food in ABQ don't miss Sophia's Place, it was featured in Diners, drive in and dives and for good reasons.

+1 The above is a very good place, easily in my top 20.
