I am not a fan of 40 in modern polymer pistols. It's generally slower splits with the higher-recoil impulse. But you don't get any more statical stopping power over 9mm HP ammo.
As a tried and true 45 guy, it took me some-time to accept this was also true with 9mm HP.
If I was running ball,it would be a different story.
Hypocritical disclaimer: I do like the 40 in 5" steel 1911s. You can make major and load to your sweet spot. Also...40 brass is everywhere. So basically I run 40 just like I run 45 for the same applications.

like said before the better caliber is the the one your comfortable with and practice with, all will do major damage with well placed shots and all will do what needs to be done in a bad situation as long as your shooting the threat and not whatever is around the threat, practice practice and a little more practice, a .177 pelet can do significant damage if the shot is placed right

I don't see the point of going .40 over 9mm for duty/personal defense. More recoil, less mag capacity, more expensive...all for a very slight performance gain. Both calibers are underpowered anyways when compared to a rifle. Shot placement is everything when it comes to pistols, which is why I carry a 9mm. It's what I carry on duty, off duty, and what I compete with. I'm confident that if needed I can put multiple rounds on target in a very short ammount of time. If your worried about barrier penetration just run 147gr +p.

Since my Edge has been treating me so wel in .40sw this last couple of years i've treated myself to another 40 this time i'm going to give Classic division a try. I was lucky enough to buy this safequeen at a steal. Know lets see how she holds up at 600 rounds per week.

I've owned and shot several .40s and although I've got nothing against it I just never jumped on that bandwagon. If I want a slow moving or lighter recoiling .40 I'll just download a 10mm. With modern ammo performance the .40 just doesn't give enough of an advantage in any respect to justify the price difference between it and 9mm to me. 9mm will always be cheaper, we've been making it for over a century after all.

When the 40 came out I thought it would be the greatest thing since sliced bacon. I dont own any now and havnt for ten years or so. I just cant put the holes where I want them as fast as I can with a nine. The 40 seems noticably less inherantly accurate than the 9 or 45. I know some love the 40 but I am not fond of it at all.

I don't really notice that much of a difference in recoil being snappy. I like the round and have no problem with followup shots or accuracy. I would take it over a 45 in a lightweight polymer gun. But ihmo, it's an excellent fit for a sig 229.

I prefer 9mm. also 45...
.40 is something in the middle that I don't really think was needed. when 9mm was dropped due to the FBI shooting in miami, the caliber wasn't really upto par with the high tech bullets. understable. so 40 might have made sense.
but with today's bullet technology, 9mm works. against barriers as well.

What you MAY gain over other calibers is small beans when you add in the PIA recoil impulse and the wear and tear it does on your guns.

Never had a issue with a 40! I have had 2 and I really love them. I stick with a 45 at the moment though. I need to acquire a carry pistol in the future though and am willing to look at a 9. No issues with the round but never a big fan of the under powered 9 vs what else is available. But I do like the affordability of the 9!

A .40 is a little snappy to be a particularly fun range gun for me, and range shooting is a little over 99% of my shooting. I mainly shoot 9mm, mostly because it's cheap and has become a world standard.
.45 ACP is fun to shoot in a different way, with its relatively low pressure and big, heavy bullets, but endless tests suggest you don't really buy much in the way of self defense over modern 9mm ammo or other .35+ calibers. Range .45ACP is almost twice as expensive as 9mm, so this choice is easy for me.
The only handgun I have a concealed carry holster for is a Sig 238 (380 ACP), but if I had to carry for work I'd probably be most comfortable with a 9mm, .40, .357 Sig, or other equivalent.

Quite a few comments about how snappy 40 is. If you reload, try out some Hodgdon Clays powder....nice and soft, love shooting 40 with Clays.

The .40 is a compromise round plain and simple.It gives you more capacity than the .45 and a bigger bullet that the 9mm therby catering to each crowd.
I am a .45 guy myself but if I have the need for higher capacity I'll go to the 9mm.
BTW in my experience every person shot by my agency with a 9mm was put down for good.Not the same can be said for the .45's that we have used for the last 10 years.
