Hey guys Ive been reading on this site for a while but I have a question about bedding my mark 4 base on my 700. There is a little bit of flex on the front but not that much at all. How important is it to bed it? Will it be really bad if I dont do it?

Re: Bedding scope base

If you are gently tightening down either the front or the back screws and the other end is coming up, then yes, your receiver is not true and you probably should bed it.

What happens if you don't? If you just tighten both ends down and run with that, then you will most likely have a base that is not true when you go to mount your rings and later scope. This will put stress on your scope, and could lead to problems.

May as well just do it right from the get go. It's not hard, it just takes the will to try and do it the first time. Here's the article I followed from another hide member -

http://www.8541tactical.com/scope%20base%20install.php

Another variant - http://www.murphyprecision.com/Page/Scope_Base_Bedding

I did as was instructed in the first link, when done I let it cure for a total of 24 hrs. Torqued it down and mounted rings and scope - Good to go.

Good luck.

Re: Bedding scope base

Usually the rear of the reciever is low, or it could be the rear pad on the base. If the rear is low, and you dont bed it, you will loose some elevation adjustment out of your scope. Just .015" will loose you one full turn of your turret..

Re: Bedding scope base

I used 8541tactical's video as a go-by for mine.
Super easy, and turned out perfectly.

Might as well do it right the first time and not take a chance on damaging your scope.

Re: Bedding scope base

Thanks everyone. I have seen a video and looked at how to do it. Just wondering if it was absolutely necessary. Im going to give it try and see how it works out. But another question can I bed either side I want and it will fix it?

You are going to want the bedding under the rear.

But if the front of the base is the part with the space then why would I do the back?

Re: Bedding scope base

If you tighten the front screws first, you'll have a gap under the back of the scope base. If you bed the rear of the base, this will have the affect of increasing the angle between the scope and barrel centerline, effectively giving you 'free' elevation in the base that will tranate to the scope - you'll have more elevation available in the scope to adjust up for longer range.

If you have a gap in the front, with the back screw finger tight, you have an issue I never ran into. If you just set the base on your reciever, you would have contact on the very front edge of the front, and the very front edge of the rear pad.. Is this how it looks?

I had a small gap in the back but a pretty significant gap in the back. Is it bad to bed the front cause I already did but could still take it off if needed. its in the process of drying.

Re: Bedding scope base

No, just let it dry and see if your scope has enough elevation adjustment for your needs. The important part is a stress free base, which you addressed.

Ok cool. Its a 15 moa base on a 308. I dont have a spot to really shoot long range but want to. You think it still has a chance at 1000 yards?

Re: Bedding scope base

After you get it zeroed at 100yrds, crank up the elevation, and see what you get. I believe you need 30" or so...
I only have 600yrds to shoot, and 15" gets me there from my 200yrd zero, so thats all I know for sure.

Re: Bedding scope base

Ok thanks a lot. But one more thing if I dont have enough elevation how would I take off the bedding on the base?

Re: Bedding scope base

Freeze it overnight, then give it a hit with a hammer. Should come right off.
