Hey all,

Just got my first can and now wondering if or why I should ever take it off other than regular cleaning?

Does it benefit anything to leave it on, take it off?

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

Better question

If you take it off to shoot why in the hell did you buy it in the first place

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

I only take mine off to clean the threads every couple hundred rounds. I learned the hard way to do this after needing a pipe wrench to remove it. Every couple of times I get the rifle out I break the suppressor loose and tighten it back to bust up some of the carbon that builds on the threads.

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

Some of mine I have to take off to get in the safe. Others are QD and have multiple host. So pretty much all mine come off every once in awhile.

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

Even with a stainless barrel, you may experience condensation and subsequent rust in the bore and chamber. This can happen when you case your gun, or worse, when you put it in the safe with the can on.

Without providing a dissertation, just think of when you have your rifle in your tent, woodstove hot, and go out for your morning hunt: lenses fog up, and barrel gets wet. The same thing can happen when you case or safe your warm can.

I'd rather you not ask how I know.

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

I only take mine off for 4 reasons:
#1 cleaning
#2 to fit in the safe. My TRG - 42 wont fit in the safe w the can on.
#3 to measure the differences in poi unsupressed while doing load development.
#4 to hear the screams of the unsuspecting at the gun range when I shoot the aforementioned 338 lm )

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

I have a friend with a MK 11 clone with the Knight's suppressor on it. He got it used and the previous owner left the suppressor on it all the time. The barrel is kind of pitted and corroded where the suppressor shrouds the barrel due the the condensation that occured during cool down. After that, we never leave QD suppressors on while storing. My Gem-Tech G-5 suppressor does not cover the barrel but it does cover the quick mount and I would not want that to get all jacked up just because I stored it without taking the spuuressor off.

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

Hell yes.

One of the chief reasons for suppressor degradation is condensation inside the tube corroding carbon steel. I take mine off after every session and run hot dry shop air through them; a hair dryer is a good second choice. Second, .22 suppressors can fill up with carbon and lead to the point of not being able to remove the baffle stack; a good soak in Carbon Killer will help that, just remember CK will etch aluminum and remove anodizing; third and finally, as stated by other posters, carbon buildup on the threads can make removal a)difficult b)frustrating c)*&@#!&!! impossible - sorta. When removing and reinstalling, I use a small dab of anti-sieze on the all the threads: can ends, barrel mounts, everything. Trust me, you'll thank yourself.

Re: Do you ever take your Can off?

yes

first one I bought I was told leave it on no worries - B/S the barrel rusts (reflex type)

this one comes off after shooting, if I have to lug the rifle for miles up a hill and I don't care how much noise I make

it is on when I am at a range, want to shoot a number of rounds 'near' houses, deer shooting early morning and don't want to piss everybody off, don't want to wear muffs for whatever reason, or I am shooting sub sonics

it is a flexible friend, I would never use it all the time but at other times it is essential - for me
