I would doubt it is moving forward, Dave Tooley would know more than me, but my bet, dead in the water and not happening.

I think it was more a brainchild of Stacey's and really, in the big picture will probably prove to be unnecessary.
The only time you heard mention of it, was when Stacey was involved, so I don't think it had the full support of the UK, I mean, you can really just get your AX338 chambered for 338 Norma and move on.
Why go through the process of inventing a new proprietary cartridge for a few extra fps that is probably already on the books somewhere else, like the Norma.
I am guessing, as I said Dave Tooley would probably know more, but having seen AI operate for years, it;s my best guess, especially given the fact you never hear mention of it in any conversations I have with them.

Stacey didn't have anything to do with it. A Hornady engineer developed the round and I helped it along some before AI came into the equation.

The status is that the project is that it's currently on the rear burner due to PSR ammunition requirements narrowing down to the 338 Lapua.
The project was fully backed by the UK. There were several cartridges under consideration during the PSR 1 timeframe, including the .300NM. Remember, the PSR was "non-caliber specific" while having a very demanding accuracy requirement. There is a large body of data that demonstrates the accuracy superiority of .30 caliber vs .338 caliber. The desire was to be able to drive a large .30 caliber bullet fast enough to meet kinetic energy requirements at 1500 meters while meeting 1.0 MOA vertical dispersion for 60 shots. The vertical dispersion requirement was later relaxed to 1.5MOA and a terminal velocity requirement was added that virtually eleminated any .30 caliber round from contention.
Both the Hornady 300AI and the 300NM are great rounds capable of driving 225 to 230 grain bullets over 2900 fps with superior accuracy. Hornady developed a very fine 225gr .30 caliber bullet for this project. The Hornady 300AI has the advantage of running with standard magnum bolts and actions while the .300NM really needs the same class/size of gun as a .338LM. The cost of the Hornady 300AI ammunition is substantially less than 338LM. Testing was also done on a Hornady 338AI and it showed great promise, but it would not quite meet the PSR terminal velocity threshold at 1500 meters. This is one of the best 338 rounds I have personally shot, and it just may be the .338 for the rest of us.
