Coyote rifle needed

I'm looking for a "Value Priced" bolt actionm rifle in 22-250.

I will only consider rifles with 3 lug bolt configuration.

My short list - in order of preference:
1. Tikka T3 stainless fluted Hunter (or maybe stainless T3 Varmint)
2. Thompson-Center Venture
3. Ruger American (when 22-250 is offered)
4. Weatherby Vanguard

Opinions? Suggestions?

Re: Coyote rifle needed

I believe the Tikka T3 has only 2 lugs.

Just curious...why only 3 lugs?

Re: Coyote rifle needed

The vanguard rifle also only has two lugs.

The tikka uses a long action in addition to having two lugs.

Those TCs are outstanding in terms of bang for your buck. Definitely a notch above the rest of this field.

I would also suggest a 788 Remington for a 22-250 beat-around coyote rifle. Nine rear locking lugs, clip fed, notoriously accurate, can't load it as hot as a 700, but should be plenty for coyotes.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

The Tikka T3 and the Weatherby Vanguard are both 2 lug / 90 degree bolt lift actions. Nothing wrong with that for coyote hunting, but they are "dis-qualified" using your criteria just the same.

The Remington 788 is either a six lug or nine lug bolt (three rows of 2 lugs or three rows of three lugs - I can't remember which) that has the (approximately) 60° bolt lift that you are looking for. They are made in both 22-250 and .243 which will harvest coyotes extremely well.

The Weatherby Mark V does have the ~60° bolt lift, but is noticeably more expensive that the Weatherby Vanguard series.

Not sure why the big deal regarding 60° vs. 90° bolt lift for coyote hunting? If you're looking for speed, why not go with a semi-auto? A well tuned AR-15 has the fastest follow up shots that I've ever seen.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

Thanks gents.

I want the short throw of a 3 lug bolt. I have a Rem. 700/HS Precision target rifle in .300 Win mag and a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .300 Win mag. The A-Bolt's action has spoiled me.

How is the Ruger American v.s. the TC Venture? One vote above for the TC. I'll look at it again.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

+ 1 for 243 it slams dogs, styer pro hunter would be my choice, light, quick bolt throw clip feed.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

I looked at the Steyr Pro Hunter. Nice rifle but pricier than the TC Venture. I have a Steyr AUG so I know their great quality and accuracy.

With the TC's 5-R rifling, MOA garantee, Hogue stock and great trigger I think it will be my choice. It's American made and that too is important.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

i haven't shot a yote in a while. last few i have shot have been with a Marlin 22 though.

got this one about 100 yards out

Re: Coyote rifle needed

You might try looking at:
Savage Model 11 w/ accutrigger $550
Remington 700 Varmint $480

Found these at Cabela's yesterday.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

I can't see this being to terribly difficult of a question.

The answer really is "whatever you want"

I have shot them with my 18" Recce, my SPSTactical, and and working on it with my 260.

For a dedicated calling gun, 22-250 or 243 is probably the best. Just buy a rifle in one of those calibers and call it done.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

I just got a cz 527 in .204 ruger. I think that would do the trick on coyotes.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

I'm an avid coyote hunter so I have to put my .02 in.
I shoot most dogs around here (Mid TN) with a rem 700 in 223. Most times under 300 yards with 55gr Hornady ammo.
I also have several kills with a savage 93 17hmr. it's awesome for head shots out to 100 yds.

I suggest something in 223 for the reduced recoil, ease of finding ammo if you don't reload and I also suggest the Rem 700 due to the over abundance of goodies for that action.
Just my opinion. your style of hunting dogs may vary greatly from mine. either way, good luck. keep the sun at your back and the wind in your face.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

Maybe consider a Savage since you can get one with a 9 twist barrel and shoot heavier bullets.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

If budget and accurate are in the same sentence then I would suggest Savage. I have bought 2 this year and both would clover leaf right out of the box. The remingtons would too but only after changing the stock and trigger and playing with handloads.

Re: Coyote rifle needed

I just bought a Vanguard S2 in 240 Weatherby magnum. The first 3 shots on target were in a 1/2" group at 100 yards and would take care of coyotes at whatever range you want to shoot. I prefer the 6mm.
