Duane and Ruth Neal and Gary and Shelly Francis are lifelong friends of mine. They run an outfitting business south of Livingston Montana. They have two camps. One in the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and one on the west side of the Yellowstone in the Gallatin Range. These people are honest and good outdoorsmen.

I have a full time job but guide hunters for these folks one or two weeks a year. Help is hard to find and business seems to get tougher for them every year.

The hunting in the wilderness camp has declined. Looks to me like the wolves and bears now outnumber the elk. Ths fishing however is almost epic. Stretches along Grizzly Creek and Hell Roaring are almost over-populated. There are also a number of lakes that hold booming populations of fish...all Yellowstone Cut Throat.

The last few years there have had only one or two summer trips. So I thought I would post here and see what people here think about booking a trip to the back country to fish.

Do you think a week of time, no comforts of home and thirty to 100 miles of horsebacking is worth the experience? It is certainly more expensive than fishing out of the pickup too. Their add states 1350 for a six day trip.

I will try to post a couple of pictures tomorrow so you can see what the country is like.

I talked with LowLight about posting here before I made this post and he graciously agreed to let me inquire.

I am interested in what you think. Your posts are appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Part of getting into the AB Wilderness...high mountain passes. Wallace Pass is just short of 10,000.

Just learned to fly fish in Montana a couple months ago.

I'd do that backcountry trip in a heartbeat. Might have to look em up. Thanks for posting the info

Re: Back Country Fishing Trips

rem300wm,

I grew up in Billings and fished the backcountry/wilderness lakes in the Beartooths quite a bit. My dad was a mountain climber and I liked to fish. So...we'd hike to a lake and he'd take off from there and I'd fish all day. Fishing wilderness lakes and the rivers into/between and out of them is AWESOME and the price they list seems like a bargain. You almost...almost..get sick of catching fish there are so many. No comparison to a float, where it's hit or miss from day to day.

I hope they book up and make some good bucks at it. With all the people flying in and out of Bozeman with their break down rod cases and Cabela's pants all summer long I would think this would be a great alternative to floating the Yellowstone or Missouri. Some people might like a shorter trip than a week so they could still do a guided float day or two, dinner at the Ale Works and a few nights in a hotel.

Best of luck to them, keeping horses/tack and gear is so expensive anymore. Hay's $200 a ton if you can find it!

Re: Back Country Fishing Trips

I was in Bozeman last year a did a float trip. We fished both the Missouri and Yellowstone. It's just like he said cabelas $hit in every boat one after another... For me I just couldn't get enough of looking up into the mountains and the high passes. Even our guide said floats are Money makers, but the fish are up in the lakes and streams. I'd LOVE to do a high moutain lake or stream trip... But schedules are busy and I can't get away for long... If they would do a 3 day trip including pick up drop at Bozman over a weekend for 750-800...per person. I'm in give me there info... Our trip was 500 a Day nice A+hotel, float, fly rods, pick up, drop at airport...Which should be more than fair if their at 1300 for a week!!! I could get my buddy on that NO problem.... Pass that along if they bit shoot me a PM I'll book ASAP,,,

yea fly in Friday late, horses in Saturday early fish after noon, all day Sunday out Monday morning to airport fly out Monday late!! I'm in!!!

!! That seems like the ticket.

ALSO: Montana State University and the local companies who work for the Government get lots of visitors in the summer...because people like to lay over for 3 - 4 days and make it a long weekend, go to the Park, etc.. Problem is quite a few of them would love to spend a few nights in the mountains but are a bit reluctant due to gear, knowledge, etc. Telling these people that they could do a three day/two night trip in the mountains and that they'll catch so many fish they'll need shoulder/wrist surgery, that would be the ticket.

Re: Back Country Fishing Trips

Thanks for the input everyone. I will pass this information along. For those interested in contacting them the name of thier business is Black Otter Guide. You can find their website on the internet if you Google them. They are also listed in the phone book. Don't know if the site would approve of me giving a number or a link.

One thing I will say is the Grizzly Creek camp is a five to five and 1/2 hour ride. Ride starts an hour and a half from Bozeman. And not an easy one...start at 6500, ride to 10000, drop back down to 7500 over 16 miles. That's a good day's work for a horse and if you're aren't used to it a man also.

That's part of the reason most of this water gets very little pressure. Some of the greatest fishing I have seen is in lakes at 8500 and sometimes higher. Not exactly the best environment for a fish but nobody bothers 'em. Too hard to get to I guess.

Point is the AB Wilderness trip may not be worth it for less than 6 days.

There's good fishing in the Gallatin too. They don't normally take summer trips in there. Forest Service regulates how many days they get in each drainage and when they can take them. It might be time for them to make a change in the business plan and start in on the Forest to work with them.

I should also say they do some trips in Yellowstone Park also. I think these are mostly by request and a little hard to get going because you have to work with the Park Service. If you get in contact with them let them know what you are looking for.

I will get this information to them and see if they can make something work.

Thanks fellas.

Re: Back Country Fishing Trips

Thats the rub, you need two days on the water to make it worth it. This is a 4 day min trip.

Re: Back Country Fishing Trips

Beautiful country...that alone would be great to see. Too bad what is happening to the big game populations.

Re: Back Country Fishing Trips

Well if you know something about packing horses, don't mind low wages and like to work hard they always need help!
