And then drove away? Well, then you will probably think that this guy deserves some slack... Cop loses loaded pistol Then again, maybe New Jersey should be looking at disarming their police forces...

Had a platoon Sgt. who left his M16 leaning against a Humvee and then drove over it. He noticed it was missing about four hours later.
He got no slack and neither should the cop.

Did that often with coffee cups and a couple times with glass pop bottles. Have not had any more mistakes since I left my over/under on the Bronco top. Bouncing on the road attracted my attention to the rear view mirror. No front bead for 20 years.

Heck, we had a local PD, who later was elected Sheriff of our county, leave his service pistol on the upper deck of a toilet while dumping one in the county court house.
It was found and returned though.

Never was brought up during election campaign.

Have seen several radios that were left on engines over the years. A few of those managed to slide off and meet the tires. I did pick up one of our captains helmets off the roadway one day and made him sweat it a bit before putting it in his locker.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

Yeah, I've done that. Coffee a few times, left my ear pro sitting on the wheel of a Humvee and you know how that ended. They were cheapo Dillons that we bought for the students, but these were mine... Dillon actually sent me a new half (only half broke) for free.

I think I recall someone running over an M4 once... It wasn't my unit obviously or I'd likely recall it a whole lot sharper!

The Seattle Police Chief, one Christmas a while back, he left his car unlocked and his pistol in the car. It got stolen. And of course, it was an "oopsie!" moment and the criminal was fully to blame, regardless of the fact there was an unsecured firearm in plain view on a public street. In front of Macy's or Nordstrom's no less.

There should most certainly be some kind of action taken for that kind of mistake. They don't go light on soldiers, and those weapons aren't even in the public!

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

This past Thanksgiving, wife and I swapped cars for me to go to work in the morning so she could pack the truck for our trip. When it was time to leave, I drove the first leg of the trip. We stopped for sodas about 100 miles down the road. Walking back to the truck I see her set of keys has ridden the first 100 miles perched on the tool box in the back of the truck. Good thing it was alot of straight driving cuz one more left turn and they'd have been roadkill.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

local cop left his mp-5 in case on the top of his car and lost it on a turn...

poor guy who found it was shitting bricks thinking someone was going to report him as the theif, anywho, the dude did it right and protected himself by calling the news and letting them handle the transaction...

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

I watched a guy leave a big ass fountain drink cup on the roof if his car and drive off.............first turn he took it fell into the open passenger side window!

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

I left a drink on the bumper back in high school. 12 miles later I picked it up off the bumper and finished drinking it!

I left a tire pressure gauge on the windshield just below the wiper blade not too long ago. It rode all around town and 45 miles over the river and through the woods. I'm the last person to judge someone for driving off with something on a vehicle. However, an officer leaving a firearm on the roof raises a lot of questions.... Like why was his car in the locker room?

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

I once left with robo-grip pliers on the hood of my jeep. Got to work and there they were same damn spot w/ no movement.

Another one was heading back to the firehouse in the engine, we went around the corner and the side compartment opened up and there went the couplings. Damn open cab engines!

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

At our old station there was a fairly large bump just outside the bay doors. Our old engine has the foldout doors. It never failed, about once a year someone would take off too fast, hit the bump, a rear door would trip the latch, fly open, and get ripped off on the wall! Our new station has a very nice entrance

Left my XD45 (in its case) on the roof of my car and drove off. Imagine my surprise as I came up to a stoplight and watched it slide down the windshield, down the hood, and into the intersection.

    Didn't make that mistake again.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

About ten years ago, we had a delivery driver take a stack of pizzas out to his car, set them on the roof while he unlocked his car. Then being in a hurry and all, he jumped in and drove off... the entire stack become road pizzas.

Too many laughs were had to be really upset about it.

As for the cop in question, I have no idea where to stand. One hand, shit happens. He told his superiors, did the right thing to correct it. The other hand, coming from the same guy was asleep in uniform in his cruiser on duty...might be more things we haven't heard about.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

    Lesson in life:
Back in high school, had a friend place his 3" loose-leaf notebook on the roof of my car while he waited. We jumped in, I floored it and heard a "bump bump". Looked in rear-view mirror and saw papers flying everywhere.

From that day, I have never placed anything on roof - always on the hood in front of driver. I have gotten into car only to get out again to retrieve the item I left on the hood.

    Add: but never a firearm . . .

Actually he tried to blame it on a Spec4 saying he had given it to her to watch. Pretty sad. We didn't call him Thundering Dunderhead for nothing.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

Embarrassing story, but good learning experience. Several years ago, wife and I swapped cars, she took my Sig239 out of the car and set it on the hood of my truck, as I was walking out the door as well. As I pulled out of the garage, I didn't notice it, and drove the three rural miles to my parents house. Upon arrival, I began thinking, where is my gun? Called my wife and she told me what she had done, the gun was nowhere to be found. I drove furiously back and forth between my parents house and mine, looking for the gun on all the turns. When several trips turned up nothing, I called the local police and reported it. And for the next 30 minutes I dealt with a fear and downright terror I'd never known, of what COULD happen. I imagined a child finding it, or some dumb kid, I literally was sick until the phone rang. The police told me someone had found it on the side of the road, and turned it in. After describing the gun to the officer, he brought it over to my house. I had never felt such shame and embarrassment, it still makes me shudder, and sick when I remember.

Never again, I always know where my guns are.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

Worked at West Building Supply back in the 90's in Athens, GA.
Customers were responsible for securing their own loads (liability purposes). Watched one jackass dump an entire truckload of lumber all over Atlanta Highway one afternoon.
We told the fool to go back inside & buy some straps... guess he'll listen next time.
& yes, it looked like a cup of soda sloshing across the highway.
Very fluidic, almost like a ballet if you watched it in slow motion.

Re: Anyone ever left a soda on the roof of their car?

When I was a young city cop in the late 70s I'd buy a cup of hot coffee, drop a magnet in the styrofoam cup and put it on the roof of my squad in winter.

Steam rising attracted other motorists attention and their frantic gesturing was returned with a smile and a wave, like I thought they were just being friendly.

Had a lot of fun with that one....
