If youve ever been near a cottonmouth youd know why...they really smell...especially when they hiss...I guess its the smell of dead flesh.

Re: Motivational Pic Thread v2.0

Was fishing in an old pond when I was a kid 8 or 9. I was brim fishing on the low end of the pond. I'd been standing in ankle deep water casing out fishing with bugs. I had a stringer of fish I'd caught and was fixing to head home. I went to pull the stringer in and as I'm pulling the stringer in I can see the fish and low and behold I see the water wake up and a cottonmouth nail my stringer of fish and hold on. After I stopped running and almost back to my house I notice I don't have my rod and reel or my tackle box. The thought of the snake in the water and how it about got me was bad enough, but having to return and get my stuff was even worse. I get back to where I can see my things and look around for the snake on the bank. I see nothing I can see my stringer in the water and the fish but no snake. So I got for broke and make a mad dash grab my rod and tackle box on the run (fu_K the stringer I'd have to step in the water to get the end of it) and haul ass out of there. I remember the rush of all of it, man did it have me worked up.

Going down a canal and was about 40-50 feet from a nest of them, they came out after my boat and I had to beat a few that tried to climb aboard. South Florida is full of them and I think they are one of the most aggressive snakes around.

.COINS LEFT ON TOMBSTONES

While visiting some cemeteries you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors t...o the grave.

These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their life while serving in America's military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of coin.

A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier's family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect. Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited.

A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity. By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the solider when he was killed.

According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans.

In the US, this practice became common during the Vietnam war, due to the political divide in the country over the war; leaving a coin was seen as a more practical way to communicate that you had visited the grave than contacting the soldier's family, which could devolve into an uncomfortable argument over politics relating to the war.

Some Vietnam veterans would leave coins as a "down payment" to buy their fallen comrades a beer or play a hand of cards when they would finally be reunited.

The tradition of leaving coins on the headstones of military men and women can be traced to as far back as the Roman Empire.

Re: Motivational Pic Thread v2.0

I have a crate of pennies I need to go visit Arlington with - anyone know if this is ok/good to do there?

My concern is rain or atmospherics leeching copper out and tarnishing the headstones.

Yes they are about the only snake I know of that will actively pruse a person away. Turkey loads are wonderful for them.

Re: Motivational Pic Thread v2.0

TNT, I was stationed in DC, and performed funeral ceremonies almost daily. We saw coins and stones left there on headstones all the time. The grounds crew pick them up after a while, to limit the chances of the mowers hitting anything and chipping the headstones, but they stay up for a while. I never heard of anyone being told they can't place a coin or stone on top.

Re: Motivational Pic Thread v2.0

Thanks, Kellogg. I like going to the cemetery to take photos and pay respects. It's an awe inspiring sight. Sad, but very proud at the same time. Probably one of the best places to go if ever feeling down in the dumps.

I like taking my camera and sharing photos of what I see. Setting coins will not only be a nice tangible experience, but also a nice visual as well.

Re: Motivational Pic Thread v2.0

Is it ok if someone who has not served to place a penny on a tombstone. I wouldn't want to disrepect anyone who is or has served.

Yep,. they are. Those were probably defending their nest. Ive heard that the king cobra, the hamadryad, is even more agressive. The can grow to 18 feet and are able to raise their heads to 40% of their length, so an 18 ft snake would be at about your eye level, or above.

Re: Motivational Pic Thread v2.0

We stumbled a fat water moccasin at the NC coast 2 summers ago; my 8 year old spotted it about 12 feet away sunning itself on the bank. Not a long snake compared to land snakes, but really thick for its length, and this one was fairly long for a moccasin... Fortunately it didn't like our intrusion and decided to go the other direction. Remarkable how high those things float on the water when they swim. Had not seen one in a long time before that incident, they don't live this far north.

Rattler in the vid deserved it for giving up his flank...
