Didn't want to steal the thread from earlier. Which do yall think would be easier to do for painting spiral flutes black with a od barrel? 1. Paint barrel Od green, bake, then tape off entire barrel and cut flutes with marble and paint flutes black. 2. Paint barrel od green, bake, use my fine tipped spray gun to paint flutes with no tape, then wipe the over spray off with a lent free rag dipped lightly in acetone, then bake.

Option 2 sounds allot easier but I'm not sure where to find a lent free rag that doesn't disentigrate when dipped in acetone and create a mess. This is the look I'm going after.

Re: Painting Flutes

I tried using a steel marble to cut the tape to fill the flutes. It worked but was a nightmare. I only did a few fluted bolts and it was a bitch.

Re: Painting Flutes

I'd do the whole thing black and bake it, being sure to focus on the flutes and the edges of the flutes, but not necessarily on the exterior portions of the barrel that will be OD.
Then fill the flutes with clay, putty, playdough or whatever and make sure they are all exactly the way you want it. Give it a quick wipe down with your choice of de-greaser and spray it OD.
A plastic putty knife will get you a nice crisp transitional edge between putty and barrel if you do it right.

Let it air cure for about 60 minutes and then pull the clay and bake it again for a final cure.

That's just how I would do it.

Re: Painting Flutes

I paint the bolt "or what ever" the color I want the flutes to be then uses blue tape and sand down the peice leaving the tape in the low spots. Then spray the last color, let dry then remove the tape leaving clean sharp lines. It is more work that the steel ball, but in the end it looks better.

Re: Painting Flutes

I've never done this but what about pre made strips of narrow border tape? It may not fill the entire flute but would fill the "valley" and some of the sides to accent the fluting? Would be cool if one could program and die cut tape to match fluting.

when i use to work on signs if we had impressed lettering we would do it like c_bass said. easier to get clean lines.
