For general purpose use in all types of lighting including near dark, which would you choose in the 3-15x class of scopes. For a field duty bolt gun out to 1k max distance.

http://nightforceoptics.com/reticles/MLR2/ Nightforce comes in a full line illumination.

http://www.premierreticles.com/pdfs/2009-3-15xGen2.pdf Premier only illuminates the center crosshair.

The obvious full line illumination on the NF should be easier to use in near dark scenarios, but does that make it a better all around choice compared to the Gen2 Mildot?

I can only speak to the Premier but it is done right for real low light use meaning it is very, very dim and doesn't obscure the target by causing your iris to contract due to being too bright.

Being in CA, I don't get to use NV, but after reading this it's got me wondering... when it's dark enough that you'd need illumination, can you even see bullet splash at long range enough to use the hold overs?

In my experience, the smaller the amount of reticle that is illuminated, the better. A dot in the center is ideal. If its so dark you can't see your reticle, you won't be shooting far enough to need holdovers, and the more light the reticle produces, the more it washes out the target.
