A couple of years ago I read an article in which a survey was given to many people. It asked them "What is important to make you feel good about your life. 85-90% replied pretty much the same answer. "To do my work, and enjoy my family and friends." Seemed pretty simple but I always wondered what the other 10-15% answered, if at all. So after pondering it for a year of more, I think Ive come up with a resonable answer.

First lets split the 85-90% to call it 87.5% want the same thing. Then throw out about 2.5% for the total nut jobs who want to be god, or somethig else, or are too fucked up to answer at all. That leaves 10%. So if 85% just want to do their jobs, and enjoy life, what COULD the others want? Then it it me...They want to be 'Leaders', or more exactly they want 'power'. Therin lays the problem. Just wanting to be a leader or hae power does not necessarily mean that one will be a good leader, or use the power wisely. I seem to recall an old native american saying..."The blind lead the blind and all fall in the ditch."

    Look at DC.

Real leaders seldom seek to lead. They just do their job sell and move to the front naturally. I'rn a stonemasonry contractor. Started as a laborer, with no interest in being a boss, I just wanted to be the best laborer I could. So I got promoted to labor foreman, then apprentice mason, then mason, then crewleader. Finally I started my own business, but I never sought to lead.

Now, when I look at the so called leaders, Im amazed, and embarrassed. All of them, both sides, all sides. The blind, leading the blind, into the ditch.

I walk my own path, and dont need anyone to 'Lead' me.

Mabey their should be a test adminstered in the 3rd grade to pick out all potential canidates who 'want' to become leaders, and put them on a remote island together, and let them lead each other.

I'm not sure about the percentages there but I'll go along with you on those who lust for power. I don't trust any of them and like even fewer!

There are masterful leaders, capable leaders, moderately good leaders, average, mediocre, totally incompetent, gutless and so on. But honestly, the argument can be made that one reason some so aggressively seek power is to block those power mad types with the means to obtain it and likely to do even greater damage.

Sometimes, zen is a helpful instructor for the dualities of life.

Good to see you back, Q Whats with the guy who had the sinkhole open under his bed...thats right in yur neighbor hood, wasnt it? BTW, clear your PM's, the box is full.

Poor guy was asleep in his rack when the floor under him gave way into the aforementioned sinkhole. Sefner, Florida, where this occurred, is about 10 miles east of me. Sinkholes in our part of the country are more frequent during the winter dry season as farmers need to pump water on their tomato, strawberry and other crops during deep cold fronts to protect the crops. This pulls water from the aquifer that pressurizes the ground. We have little meaningful bedrock in much of our state.

As to the PMs. I'll try! I'm still pretty lost navigating the new site!
