M24 / M40 Harris Bipod Fixed or Swivel?

Ive searched online and found nothing but airsoft stuff...

Does the military issue their M24 SWS's with fixed or swivel bipods, or is there too much variation to say for sure. I know the pros and cons of each, just am curious for a project.

Thanks in advance!

From digging around a bit more , I think ive nailed it...someone correct me if I am wrong.

The M40 series is not issued with a bipod, yet Marines can put one on if they choose.

The M24 was issued with a smooth leg, Harris non swivel 9-13.

The M24-A2 and M24-A3 are issued with a smooth leg swivel 9-13.

This is based partially off Remington's website, and pictures ive seen online. It seems the only 6-9 bipods are on home-builds, and the same goes with notched.

This makes somewhat sense to me, as the 9-13 is more of a field appropriate size than the 6-9 which is aimed at bench shooting...not to say it cant be field used.

The smooth leg vs notched? I think notched is faster, but there is more variation with smooth as far as ajusting to terrain...not as fast maybe but the increase in control is there.

Correct me if im wrong, this just seems to be a neglected part of most M24 replica builds, I wanted to find out rather than get misinformed information.

Swivel, and Ive yet to find a situation where I wanted more than 9" bi-pod.

I agree, i'm not necessarily asking what is the most practical, just what is issued.

I still really have yet to get a conformation on notched or plain legs, and also the size.

The M24 was initially issued with the Harris 9"-13" non-swivel, smooth leg version but if units bought the Advanced Sniper Accessory Kit it came with a Harris 6"-9" swivel, smooth leg bipod.

Im not sure if thats the ADVANCED kit but it looks like some sort of sniper kit.

Im curious as to why the m24 is issued with smooth legged bipods rather than notched, which seems to be the standard on this forum. It makes sense that the advanced kit would have a 6-9 rather than the 9-13 since most people seem to agree its unpracticaly tall.

Thanks for the conformation on that, if anyone else has some details please chime in, especially if you have picture proof!

First issue was Harris Model 1A2 Ultralight, non-pivoting base with hard plastic foot pads, spring-retracting legs without notches.

So it seems I'm on track, aside from the updated rifles having the shorter bi-pod?

I ended up going with a 9-13 fixed notched leg Harris for my poor man M24 build, but I did want to clarify for future builds since I would like to do a non poor mans build next, and do it right!

No offense man but I wouldn't get so bent out of shape over a damn bipod when it's a build rifle. I've seen every bipod imaginable on m24's out in la la lands

I know, its damn OCD....it makes me so indecisive, I wanted to do a ton of research first so I dont think too hard about it later. Honestly as it is the fact that I got notched over smooth is going to bug me, I only went that route because its more useful to me as a shooter.

Ill post my build up in that thread, although its a bit of a different route...when I say poor mans build, I mean absolutely dirt poor. I'm trying to do a Mosin Nagant based M24 replica, mostly because I want it to feel like a M24, but shoot the cheaper 54R cartridge, and help train me more with shooting fundamentals and handling recoil.

My next build will be a Remington 700 based M24 build, but im holding off for now since I dont have a hand-load setup (yet) and cannot for the life of me find .308.

This will let me get a proper scope setup, and other M24 parts for the gun, and then transfer them to the Rem when I get one, and then replace them with similar yet lower end parts on the Mosin.

Maybe ill make a build in the vintage rifles section if there is interest.

Say what again?

I know right? Crazy idea. The plan is using a M24 optic, ive got a "tactical" bolt knob, similar bipod, stock, ect...fully modernized mosin, to shoot as an alternative to a tricked Rem 700, to save on ammo. A lot of people do the .22lr plinker, but I wanted to go the route of the mosin so im still dealing with recoil which is something I need to work on as a shooter.

Im half kidding.

I know there is no way a mosin would compare even half assedly to a m24 in any way.

Basically im modernizing a mosin since I cant find .22lr ammo for shit right now, but have a butload of 54r, so im modernizing this so I can ta least get some useful practice in, until I can find .308 again.

I wanted to buy a bipod now to later use on a rem 700, so I was just curious as to what the 24 uses as ill be very inspired by that rifle when I build a rem 700 up.

I'm so confused by this thread. Just buy a Harris when you get that 700.

You're wanting to put a 'M24 optic' on a Mosin? I have news for you, there is no 'M24 optic' as the M24 system fields various optics which are not solely specific to just the M24.

Additionally, a Mosin, while fun (I have a 91/30 ex sniper) isn't exactly something I would A. dick around with and put anything except the correct base/mount/optic setup on (assuming it shoots worth a shit) and B. go to as my precision or training rifle.

Just shoot the damn thing with irons and then move up to an optic. Don't be that guy that bubbafucks his Mosin with bipods and Tasco shit. It's not going to help.

If you want to seriously get into 54R shooting, look into at least a PSL or VEPR - you're probably going to have to handload anyways, which defeats your entire premise. 22LR will be back at Walmart more regulary within 2 months I suspect.

Im a little late on the bubbafucking. I have a few stock, un-issued mosins, and then my m-44 scout, and now my 91/30 ive been modernizing.

Im thinking now about keeping it irons as the money involved for a rock solid mount and scope just isnt really worth it. Id rather put the money into my .22 or saving for a 700, assuming I can find ammo.

I would eventually like to handload the 54r stuff,as well as .308 once I get a 700, just hard to plan with the inflated prices right now.

There are some pretty impressive results from modernizing a mosin....seems people with upgraded triggers and a decent scope can get some impressive groups. Ive been enjoying the build so far on this 91/30,and if I go the j-meck scope route everything I do can be reversed...my m-44 build is the same, the rifle can be restored to stock since the scope mount is off the rear sight leaf.

Like I said I was half joking.....I wouldnt go out and buy a Mk-IV scope for a mosin, but for now this is all I have a stockpile of ammo for so id like to make it a semi practical shooter so I can at least go shoot something.

Hopfully your right about the ammo.....it seems ridiculous that I can go into a store and find a brick of .22lr
