Hi guys, got a Dilemma here. I recent try to getting into Reloading and got a hold of a bunch of the Hornady .224, 75Gr AMAX Bullets but was dumb enough not to do any researches ahead of buying them. I was intending to use them for my MK12 AR but realized they will Not fit in the AR magazines.

Luckily, I do have a Tikka T3 Scout CTR in a .223 that can use them for.

My question is, has anyone owning a Tikka in .223 Shot these bullets out of the Factory Tikka magazines? I've been reading up on these and almost everyone points out that these are usually only Single Loaded.

These are very high quality bullets and has a lot of potential. But I just don't want to deal with the fact that it needs to be Single Loaded every time.

Also anyone know if these can fit in a AI .223 Mag?

Your input and suggestion is greatly appreciated. If it doesn't work out then these will be going in the Classifieds as soon as they get here.

Sincerely Thanks!

HOG.

Have you tried seating a few dummy rounds and trying them in the Tikka mag and see if they feed? That is the best place to start.

Pulled this off of Midway for the AICS .223 mags if you didn't actually have any to test with:

This magazine will accept a cartridge with a maximum overall length of 2.550" which leaves 0.020" of clearance so the cartridge will still be able to feed and move in the mag without a problem.

Hornady 8th Edition manual for the AR 15 in the Service Rifle section lists an overall length for the 75 A-Max at 2.390

I shoot them out of my Savage with a McCrees chassis and AICS mags. AICS mags are long enough.

They will work in the factory mag but probably won't be able to seat them were you want. I'd switch to the AICS mag. It is well worth it.

AICS mags are plenty roomy to get to the lands
Factory mag must be lengthened. Not that big of deal. Plenty of write ups online. Also tikka preformance makes a bobsled for the factory mag to make single loading easier.

What kind of options do I have to convert the Tikka to accept AICS mags? Can I use the Factory Stock and just install a bottom metal? Any idea what brand and where to get it done?

Thanks for the input sir!

You can buy the CDI bottom metal and inlet it with a Dremel into the factory plastic stock...if you are careful. The AICS mag is then plenty long to seat those 75 AMAX's to the rifling. I did it, but had to do a little modification to the AICS magazine, as it didn't seat properly against the bottom of the action. No big deal, but you do need to do a little grinding on it with the Dremel also.

I use a third eye tactical bottom metal with the 10 round polymer mags in my t3 load them to 2.420 oal
They shoot really well so far iv taken them out to 845yards with good results.. Work really well on foxes and id imagine coyotes would have similar results, i also shoot the 80gr bergers at a similar oal with even better results at long range.

I sent my factory varmint stock down to CDI and it was like a week or two and I had it back. Did have to trim the rear action screw but the $65 to have it done right isn't bad. It looks factory. I didn't like having to trim the AICS mag but it works alot better.
