Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a starting load for:

IMR 4831 powder with 178gr Hornady A-Max

I'm looking for accuracy loads not top velocities...

Thanks,
Nico.

Well I can't tell you for a 178 grain but I am using 210 Bergers and am using 68 grains and having very accurate results

No I have only shot the Bergers. I started out with the 190s then upgraded to the 210s, have even shot the 230s but went back to the 210s because I long range hunt with these loads

I have a load worked up for 72.0~72.1gr of IMR4831 for the 180gr Interbond.

Using Federal brass/CCI250 magnum primers and powder still not compressed. From what I've seen the max is from 73 to 74 (depending on source) but there is a nice accuracy node around this charge for my factory barrelled Rem Sendero.

My chrono says the load is around 3030fps so I am sure there is more room to go but you did say accuracy over velocity so maybe this helps. Funny but I think that the Sierra manual also states IMR4831 as their accuracy load for the 175-180gr class of bullets in 300WM. IIRC.

With your Begers (I am using 185gr VLD's) what is your OAL? I just found my headspace last night to be 3.3505" and I know the Bergers are finicky with their Secant Ogive shape. How far off the lands are you seating your bullet? Also, I have IMR 4831 and H1000, which would you all suggest to be a better powder for a 20" barrel? I would think the 4831 since it is slight faster burning.

sorry to jump in here, but i am contemplating a 300WM build, and was wondering what kind ov velocities you can expect form a 20", why not just run a 20" 308? again not trying to be a jerk, just trying to gain an understanding of the 300wm cartridge.

I was thinking a 28-29" win mag, try to push the 230's near 2900 if posible... i am looking for long range target use.

not trying to hijack your thread, just thought slow burning powders out of such a short barrel would be a weste...

No worries, I just bought this rifle from another hide member. I would have personally put a 24" barrel on the rifle but this is what I got. I have not yet used a chronograph with the rifle, however, I am buying one today. I just started working some used cases last night and will begin creating loads tonight. I will let you know as soon as I get some useful data. I do have an 18" .308 AR-10. If you want to do hunting with your .300 WM, you just have to consider the weight and the length of hauling around a 28" barrel. I guess we can compare velocities with similar loads as soon as I am done.

thanks in advance, havent bought or built one et but i think a win mag will be my next build.

U am currently at work so not sure what my oal is, if I'm not mistaken its close to 3.34. If I could say to get one bullet I'd have to say the 210s the Bergers are pricey but you won't regret it. As far as powder goes I would try h1000, I like the imr but it seems to be pretty temperature sensitive from what I can tell but I can't complain I have 10lbs of it so its what I'm gonna use
