I have a FN PBR with the factory DBM, Hogue stock and 18" bbl. I toyed with the idea of putting it into a McRee, but I am in the middle of a custom R700 build so I am looking for a handy rifle in a wood stock. I am trying to convert my DBM to a hinged floor plate and put the action into a wooden stock to look a lot like the classic M40. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Also, if I do the hinged floor plate conversion, would the entire thing fit into a standard Win 70 stock?

I am looking for it to look a lot like rrflyer's:

Any recommendations?

Dave,

I have seen several members with SPR-A3Gs convert their hinged floorplate magazines to a DBM of one kind or another. Their left over hinged floor plate magazine assembly would work on your PBR if you are staying with a .308 or .308-based cartridge. Maybe you could post in the "want to buy" section and find one.

As far as the stock, the PBR will fit most any Winchester M-70 SA inlet, particularly if you convert to hinged floorplate. The only concern then would be the barrel channel. The stock PBR will be heavier than the standard M-70 hunting barrels. Closer to a Coyote contour.

Hope this helps and let us know how the build turns out.

Action Guy: Thanks for the heads up and info. I was hoping that it wouldn't be a huge issue to convert to a hinged floor plate and I am gld to see that it wont be. When the funds clear, I will start on the project and see how it goes. I will definitely post a build thread on here when I start. There really isn't much info on the PBRs on here. I guess R700s and clones get most of the attention on here based on it being the same as what the military uses.

No problem. In fact, most Winchester M-70 short action hinged floorplate magazine assemblies made to feed .308 based cartridges would fit on the PBR. Some of these will be a combination of aluminum and steel assemblies. The SPR hinged floorplate assemblies will be all steel, one-piece, Williams style (or actually made by Williams). The strength and durability would be there beyond that of a two-piece bottom metal or alluminum bottom metal.

I email Williams earlier and he told me that his Win70 floorplates are gtg for the PBR. He emailed me back in about 5 minutes. That is top notch customer service!!!

That is exactly what I did with this PBR-XP barreled action after it was rebarreled to 260 Rem.

LRJammer: That is an amazing looking rifle. It looks so much cleaner that the hogue stock that is on mine now. Did you have to relieve the barrel channel at all? And is there anything that I need to watchout for while doing this?

I made this stock from an unfinished blank that I ordered from Richards Microfit. I have another rifle with a Manners MCS-T stock which is pretty much the same as the McMillan HTG or M40A1 stock and used it for a template to make this one. They dont have a profile that was anything like what I wanted so I ordred a benchrest style stock that was oversized in all dimensions with some modifications to it and then did the rest of the shaping myslef. The only part I didnt want to have to tackle myself was the inletting. If I remember correctly, the blank came with a 3/4" barrel channel an I opened it up to match the barrel.
