5-year-old kills his sister, 2, with 'My First Rifle'

Completely avoidable tragedy. This 5yo will have to live with this for the rest of his life while the fault lies with the parents in my opinion.

" The gun, which he received as a gift last year, was inadvertently left loaded with a single shell in a corner of the family's home."

I wasn't even going to read the article but the image on Google to the left of the story was the adjustable stock of an AR which is nothing close to the Cricket stock. It's the little stuff like this that makes me even more pissed at the media.

That's a heartbreaker.

Just read this over on yahoo news, and they were showing a ruger 10/22 with a red dot sight on it.

It is sad that this has happened, and I to look to the parents. They should have been teaching the boy proper safety for the rifle as well as checking it them selves when done. It is sad but all this is going to do is push the "gun grabbers" closer to the edge of the abyss.

My heart really does go out to the family and this little boy.

The gun grabbers are gun grabbers regardless of how many things like this happen. If the above kid had drowned in a backyard swimming pool they'd still be crying to ban guns.
'Gun control' is only about safety to those who are only puppets of those who know what it's really about, i.e. power.

And can see them pushing this for safety to be honest.....espically since these people love to use kids for pushing their goals.

Still sucks either way though.

Tragic for the girl; sad for the boy; shame for the parents. (as in shame on the parents)

Pretty much this.

If the child is too young to be held responsible for his own actions (and I feel that he is), then the tragedy is the fault of the parents.

I'm not sure that criminal charges should be filed, since I don't really think it's going to do anything that isn't already being accomplished by the anguish that the girl's family must already be feeling.

I think having to live with the fact that your child died as a direct result of your actions is probably enough punishment. Filing charges would surely put a financial hardship upon a family that still has one child and needs to be concentrating on healing and doing everything they can to help the son deal with the tragedy.

Yeah but in my opinion remorse isn't a punishment. Their negligence resulted in the death of a child...someone needs to be held accountable. Justice isn't to be turned on/off when emotions become involved.

However, I see your point and it's a valid one. It's def. a slippery slope and I will be following to see what happens.

I agree this is a hard one. Do you leave the boy in the care of what should be his best caretakers, the parents, or have they proven their ineptitude in parenting already? I can't answer that question.

File felony charges against the parents and if they stick, as convicted felons they lose the right to have firearms because obviously they are too stupid to own them.

kids...

Kids are just that... Kids.

I have always kept everything put up with only the couple I carry loaded. And they are always put up if I don't have them on me. I have started teaching the kids about any gun from the first time they asked about them. I've sat down in the floor and unloaded them and took them apart and let the kids and now grandkids handle the individual parts. Then I put them together and while SURE they were unloaded let them handle them for a couple of minutes.

That is the same thing I do today. If one of the grandkids has a question about something I have, I dig it out and we sit in the floor.

I hope this proves to be safe. It was with their mothers.

I was growing up and knew exactly where I could find a loaded 1911 or 38 snub at any time in my parents room. Never shot anyone. There is no black and white answer here. It depends on the amount of information you've given the kid, and it depends on the kid.

These parents miscalculated by ignorance or just mistake. The issue here is now they have a dead kid, how much more trouble should they be in? I'm not sure. Is it best to remove the remaining kid? Try and Jail them? I don't think there is nearly enough info for any recommendation on how guns and kids should absolutely be treated.

That won't stop headlines however.
