Have just completed a build, Savage 110FP L/A [pre95 model]. Mated to a 30" Lothar Walther heavy profile SS fluted barrel, 1:10 twist chambered .308Win, married down on a Choate Machine tool stock. Am on budget for now, but still never the less want to get a piece of good glass up that won't cost me my grandchildren sold into slavery. Have followed with interest three pieces:
a. Leatherwood M1200-- bought one, difficult to set up and disappointing
b. Falcon Menace 4-14X?44? side focus, appears to be built like a Centurion tank, UK built, plain brown box shipped [so what] matte black finish, some cons, mostly pros, MiliRad. I think 14X will be more than sufficient for 1000yd shooting
c. SWFA SS 20X42 rear focus; understand background history here, read lots of pros. I'm thinking with its 142MOA total field of change that this is a plus. I'm also thinking with a fixed power there is less to go wrong [simple is good] and the mildots will be correctly in relation to the focus. The absence of scope illumination [I think that that is a whiz bang] is not bothersome to me. TheMiliRad capability I find very good.
My current system is a KonusPro30 6-24X44 which is a MiliRad. system and have learnt to appreciate the fine adjustments and now prefer them over 1/4 or 1/8th minute systems.
I am leaning, at present, to the SWFA SS 20 fixed power as I have found that I invariably set my Konus at 16X and do not bother zooming, so why use and "extra capacity" that I am not using at present? additionally, here I think 20X will still leave me to sight and shoot without being too overcome by the EKG screen that the scope field will become.
The two rounds of choice for me are either SMK190s or 185Berger BT Long Range.
Thanks for listening in; pointers and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a hi power fixed scope would work for you, but I might tend to go with the SS 16x or even 12x over the 20x, just for field of view. And, sometimes with heavy mirage you may like 16x better than 20x. The Falcon has quite a few happy users, some unhappy - but overall they are a decent value. For a little more, the Leupold mark AR mod1 6-18x may be a good option as well, especially with a 20moa base. Nice rifle, btw.

Thanks brother, will keep my eye peeled here for other inputs, guidance here is much appreciated. When I get it set I'll "E" in some pics.

I have thought about that. Honestly here, I am trending towards simplicity. I think that the fixed power scope will offer less
to malfunction in overall terms of moving parts. I remember when I first started shooting competitively almost 30 years ago almost all of the scopes on the line were fixed power scopes. Life happened and I had to go back to sea, then I retired. Now, I see a flood of variable power scopes [may of which are of questionable provenance] judging by feedbacks on websites such as this. So, I'll start back at zero so to speak and try out a fixed power scope. I want simple and repeatable. Thanks for your input here; if this works the way I think I may go all the way and get the big SS. At any rate half the fun is the voyage. Will keep you posted.
