Strykervet makes some very good points. I haven't used any VA facilities because we have private insurance. Access to bases, and VA facilities would be a HUGE benefit to retiring military people. In the Portland area, my buddies always complained about very long waits to get service. Once your name comes uo for service, they have had no complaints about the quality of service though. More rapid access for something like knee, or back surgery (often considered "optional") would be something worthy of consideration. However, I have no info about the wait for service near Seattle/Tacoma. There are certainly more bases up here for vets to get on base buying priveleges. Lewis/MCcord, Bremerton, Whidbey Island NAS, and the Sub base are all places that could be used. Portland only has some minor bases, or guard bases around it.

Oregon has income tax, but no sales tax. Overall, Washington's tax bite is a bit more.

Strykervet was right on about visiting both eastern and western parts of both states. There is a tremendous cultural difference between the two sides of both states (Oregon and Washington) It almosty seems that the liberals in both states dominate in the west, and conservatives dominate in the east. The big difference between the two states is that with all the military bases around Puget Sound, the liberals in Washington have to work much harder to get their way than those around Portland.

Both states have a huge investment, and pride in coffee, and micro-brews. I doubt anyone would be disappointed in either state on those accounts..the reputations for quality are well deserved.

If SBR or select fire are not important, then Oregon's more liberallaws there are irrelevant. Washington is seeing some movement there though, although SBR will likely happen long before select fire.

Around Portland there is much more gang activity than I have seen here on the western part of Puget sound. However I don't have much i fo about the eastern side as I haven't lived there. Many areas around Portland are seeing HUGE influxes of hispanics, and hispanic gangs.

Although I like both states very much, I would also recommend looking into Boise, ID, or the upper panhandlemof Idaho. The Salmon wilderness area is an area of staggering beauty and is quite remote. Very near eastern Washington, and Montana...sort of the best of all areas.

This thread makes me sad.

I've got a year left of college before I really start my career (Naval Architect), then 30 years or so in the industry before I can retire. I'm really drawn to the mountains up north, but genius me picked an industry that is predominantly attached to the ocean to the southern part of the country.

I'm ready to retire to Wyoming/Idaho right now!

Top,
May I suggest the Ozarks in northern Arkansas? There are several plusses.
About any farmer will let a military guy shoot as far as you want on their land, and it's free with no range goons.

I was medically retired as an e5 after 3.5yrs, so I make about half of your income, and even that is considered pretty wealthy here due to the low cost of living.
Land and houses are cheap.
People are generally good here.
Thee are a lot of colleges around.
I have two rivers and two lakes within 20 min.
Best of all, we will have another patriot in our arsenal!

I would suggest the Ozarks just a bit more North in Missouri. University in either Springfield or Rolla, Mark Twain National Forest out your back door. Game may be not include the larger species you listed; but fishing and medium to small game hunting is outstanding. Land, water, hospitals, and other amenities all available.
And during the Civil War, Missourians shot people on both sides. Still a bit of that attitude today; very polite people.

I'm throwing another in for Wyoming. Amazing hunting, better scenery. No state income tax , low sales tax. Constitutional carry. More open spaces than one could explore.

I am tdy in ft. lewis, kind of nice, but have not seen a single animal out in the training area, huge pine trees and Mt. ranier is nice to see.

about 80 degrees today, looking forward to the drive home through idahoe, montana, south dakota

I'd recommend Eastern Oregon/ Idaho. If you get out of the boise/ i 84 treasure valley you can still find nice places for good prices.

Yea I prefer eastern oregon our baker city area. Nice land very cheap prices. Found about 300 acres with 40 of it water front for less than 200k

Any State that doesn't tax military retirement. One not on your list is Delaware. I would pick Texas.

Texas by far and central Texas to be specific. Great pro gun state and still a conservative stronghold even though I happen to live in liberal freaky Austin. Austin had an Air Force base when I moved here but it was closed many years ago. Fort Hood is close and numerous bases in San Antonio. Great hunting and fishing. No state income tax. Nice coast and just a long days drive from mountains like Colorado or Arkansas. Strong economy and many 2nd career opportunities.

Sssh lets keep this place just how it is
i left TX to move to the mountains and my own land to hunt on
Got a lil cabin (2500sq ft) overlooking the white river, deer and turkey share my morning coffee
Got sporting clays about 15min away @ twin lakes and 700 yd range about 30min @ ridgerunner
Hunt right out my back door or front
Luv it here, still getting unpacked. You can keep TX especially central TX

I was looking at Wyoming,Utah, and Idaho myself. I'm only 33 but figured I could buy the land now and develop it as the years go by. Only things I need are internet connection and some kind of local town with restaurants, groceries, and supplies within 15-20 miles. Saw 36 acres for sale about 26 miles from Jackson and am thinking about pulling the trigger.
