At 565 Yards 1/4 MOA at 1000 yards 1/3 MOAIf I do my part she will hit the 5" swinger 7 out of 10 times.I run them slow at 2700fps and I have a 1 in 10 twist barrel I haven't found a better bullet The Ogive is consistent and the weights do not require further sorting."

"Within the last 2 weeks I was able to figure out the perfect loads for my Tactical 2.
My Groups at 100 yard are now one hole groups and total MOA is under 1/4 MOA.
300 Gr Sierra sitting 25 thousands off the lands seems to be the ticket.

The bullet is too long to clear the bottom of the barrel so I machined a groove with a milling at the bottom, .100 before the groove to lock the action, this way I can load with the clip and the groove guide the bullet in the chamber without any issue I know its not current practice but I did not weaken the action nor the capacity to handle the pressure of the 300WM"

Atmosphere: Details not known except for the mention "precise measurements of Altitude, Temperature, Barometric Pressure, Humidity, Direction of Fire, and GPS positions were taken."
Grouping:
600m - 4 shots fired, one to determine strike and the next three on target inside a 6cm circle.
800m - 11cm circular orange target. "Three hits in a row on these disks were enough."
1000m - 11cm circular orange target. "2 hits out of four shots were recorded at this range, with the misses only 1 or 2 inches away from the clay targets."
1200m - "The accuracy of these bullets at 1200m was also impressive, however once I started to shoot at 1400 and 1600m the consistency seemed to drop off. This showed to me that, before the 1400m mark these bullets were entering the transonic zone."
1600m - "The remaining few rounds I had left were used to hit a small steel plate at the magic mile."

2006 Season:
Kent Reeve won the 2006 Camp Perry Long Range National Championships and reports:
"I Shot a 300 magnum for the heck of it this summer at one team match during LR Regional. It was a pick up team and all of us were just out for a good time and to test stuff. Had a 100-9x on first 10 shots and that precipitated the idea of taking that rifle to US Nationals at Camp Perry Ohio and shooting it at 1000 yard matches instead of the pea shooter Palma rifle as I've been doing for years. My 300 mag is 10 twist 4 groove Lilja installed by Mark Hunt (an extra barrel he had in his inventory) mated to an Interarms Mauser single shot action with factory trigger in McMillian prone stock. Horrible lock time, but if follow through is right, it doesn't matter.
End result? Won the Nationals!!!

In addition to having a 1:10" twist, his chamber is tighter than SAAMI spec. The Blaser 300 Winchester Magnum Match Barrel is factory spec and has a 1:11 twist. The heavier loads may not work well in the Blaser rifle. I still think it's worth trying them out.

My development loads with this charge got me about .75" groups at 200 yards, and for my 50 round batch I measured all brass to insure uniformity with .001", weighed the bullets to .1 grain, and double weighed all powder charges to the 1/10 of a grain.

SIG SAUER Tactical Rifles
The Blaser Tactical 2 from SIG SAUER may very well be the most radical bolt-action precision rifle ever produced. Built around the revolutionary Blaser straight pull action, this rifle was engineered from the ground up to create the best possible shooting platform. With the bolt closed, a 360-degree radial collet expands into the locking groove of the barrel, and the bolt head is auto-centering and self-headspacing.

The straight pull action has no rotating parts and can be cycled very fast with minimal effort. From a solid rest, this southpaw shooter was able to run the Tactical 2 much faster than any left-hand bolt gun I’ve shot in the past. The bolt of the Blaser 2 can be quickly converted to right- or left-hand operation.

Another key feature of the Tactical 2 is barrel change capability. The end-user can take the basic system and switch between 5.56mm, .308 Winchester, .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum. No special tools are required to swap out the bolt head, barrel or magazine. The barrels are hammer forged, fluted and plasma-nitrided for maximum service life and corrosion resistance. A highly effective muzzle break is also part of the package. For the mounting of optics, the barrel is equipped with a 1913 Picatinny rail.

The composite stock of the Tactical 2 is fully adjustable to meet the needs of the enduser. Made of injection molded polymer, the stock remains stable under the most extreme climatic conditions. A rear monopod with micrometer adjustment will also help get you on target.
I would like to have been able to shake down the sample Tactical 2 at longer distances, because the 100-yard performance was most impressive. Its one-stage trigger was very user-friendly and got me printing some bragging size groups right from the start. The Tactical 2 doesn’t come cheap, but this is one rifle in a league of its own.

Barrel replacement?

Options? One would be to send the barrel-receiver assembly back to Austria. Another option is just to buy a SSG 04 .300 Win mag or .308 Rifle and swap out the barrel-receiver assembly into the SSG 08 stock assembly. I assume these parts are compatible and interchangeable. Price is approximately $2100 for a new SSG 04 300 Win Mag or .308 on GunBroker.

A couple posts on the net suggested that Benchmark Barrels would rebarrel a press fit Steyr barrel. They are only able to rebarrel threaded Steyr Rifle barrels. This does not include the SSG 04 and 08 rifles.

"I use a Steyr SSG PII in .308 in 600 and 1000 yard F-Class Tactical Rifle matches near the Gulf in Texas. The only thing special I did to the rifle was put it in a McMillan stock. Using 175 gr. Sierra Match King and 45 gr. of Varget it will shoot consistently 94%. That is hitting a 10 ring (10 inch circle) at 1000 yards 94% of the time with Texas wind. I want to justify blowing more money on a custom rifle but when my SSG shoots under .40 MOA, but why should I?"

I bought this rifle a year ago as an upgrade to a 7mm that I was using as a target and hunting rifle. I wanted an accurate bolt action to fill both rolls and was concerned about weight as well as performance, as I frequently hunt antelope and elk in Wyoming. This rifle has surpassed my expectations by far. After a 50 round break in period, I started to measure the groups. While working through about four different hand loads, I am now shooting .17 inch groups at 100 and sub MOA groups at my recent shooting session at 450 yards. To truly appreciate this rifle's capabilities, do not measure 100 yard groups. Start measuring past 300. Even with a hot barrel, this rifle will still group sub MOA, with no shot walking. If you miss the target, it will not be the rifle's fault.

I put a Nightforce 5.5-22 NXS on her and at 1400 yards I'm drilling my 10" target with my reloads over and over and over.... Hit a coyote at 1024 yds and it looked like he got hit with by a truck going 90mph! Recoil isn't as bad as you'd think. Getting a second magazine is like herding cats, nearly impossible which is my only complaint. I'd buy another if my wife would let me. Best gun I ever purchased.

At the range, my intention was to shoot some groups at 100 meters and then shoot at the longest range I was allowed, but the Europa Schiesszentrum Wr. Neustadt range near Vienna only had 100-, 200- and 300-meter ranges. After a group to check cold-bore zero and trigger pull, I saw that I had printed a 3-shot group of 0.8 MOA. Then I shot another 3-shot group to adjust the cheek piece and the butt stock length, and it printed at exactly 1 MOA. When I shot my first group for record I could hardly believe my eyes, a 0.24 of an inch group was there, and that’s sub-1/4 MOA with Federal Premium Match ammo.

Even though I am a sharpshooter instructor and can shoot most rifles to their potential, I am not into benchrest, and groups that small make me smile. With that smile on my face I shot another one. Result, a 0.33 of an inch group. “I can’t be so lucky”, I thought, while I loaded the magazine with three more rounds.

When I shot a 0.28 of an inch group I realized two things. First, that the SSG08 is the most precise out-of-the box rifle I have ever shot, and second, that I could barely scratch its potential on a 300-meter range. You have to bring custom benchrest rifles into the arena to print around 1/4-MOA groups one after the other. Half-MOA, maybe, but not this small.

I takes a bit of diligence to find the sweet load for a given rifle. Constant testing of different powders, loads, bullets, etc. and documenting these can get you rat-brained after a while. I have an SSG-04 and it took close to 6 months to find the sweet load for it. Once I got it dialed in, it shoots 10 shot 5/16" groups at 300 yds. consistently. The load is as follows:

Cerrosafe shrinks during the first 30 minutes of cooling and then at the end of an hour, is EXACTLY chamber size. At the end of 200 hours it will have expanded approximately .0025". This factor is well known by all toolmakers and they will take it into consideration when making dies or reamers or gauges from your cast - if you will tell them the cast is of Cerrosafe. Adjusting Data from “Aged” Casts

"The following information on expansion characteristics is from my
research and experiences in making well over 50 casts to perfect my
casting technique and gather chamber and bore information for my book
on the Browning BPCRs. I still have the original casts which were made
several years ago and have taken additional data months and years later
that directly correlates back to the original cast dimensions.

I mentioned Buffalo Arms and Brownells as two suppliers of Cerrosafe.
The cast instructions provided by Buffalo Arms does not discuss
expansion characteristics, but Brownells’ data sheet does discuss it.
Based on my experiences, I recommend that you completely ignore the
expansion comments provided by Brownells for two reasons. It became
clear to me that Brownells’ data did not correlate to the actual data I
measured over time. Plus, after discussing the discrepancies with a
Brownells technical representative, he could not substantiate the data
and only confirmed that the measurements should be taken 1hr after the
cast was made, essentially indicating that their expansion data may be
incorrect. Since then I have definitely confirm it's not correct.

Although I have not purchased Cerrosafe from MidwayUSA, early on,
as I was becoming familiar with the process and found that Brownells’
expansion correction factors were not correct, I shared my frustrations
and findings with a shooter very experienced with using Cerrosafe. He
referred me to MidwayUSA’s instructions and data sheet on the product,
which contained the accurate expansion factors listed below.

So, other than to confirm that Cerrosafe does in fact initially contract
then expand as it cools and ages over time, how useful are the actual
factors. To start with, notice that the maximum shrinkage listed is at
30 minutes, which is the ideal time to remove the cast from the
chamber. Also note that the sign of the factor changes from negative
to positive 1 hr after the cast is made (the point in time when the cast
dimensions match the chamber dimensions). It may not be clear to
you now, but the sign is important when the factor is used in a simple
formula to adjust data taken from aged casts. Also note that at 96
hours (4 days), Cerrosafe has reached its maximum expansion point
and stabilized; years later it will measure the same as it did at the 96 hr
point.

Another key to using the data is noted in the table heading indicating
that the contraction & expansion factors versus time are measured in
inches per square inch. So now you’re probably scratching your head
and thinking, what in the devil does that mean? It certainly wasn’t clear
to me at first. What it actually means is, in order to use the correction
factor, it must be subtracted from the square of the measurement,
then take the square root of the result to obtain the corrected data.

For example, the cast neck diameter from my Browning .40-65 BPCR
chamber measured 0.4353” one hour after taking the cast. 24 hrs later
the cast neck measured 0.4375”. So, 0.4375” squared equals
0.19141”. Next, the appropriate factor (0.0022”) is subtracted from
0.19141”, which equals 0.18921”. Now, taking the square root of
0.18921” equals 0.4350”; a difference of only 0.0003” from the original
1 hr measurement. Now that’s real close.

Another example, the cast groove diameter from my Browning .45-70
BPCR measured 0.4590” one hour after taking the cast. Well over 96
hrs (actually 4 years) later the groove diameter from the cast measured
0.4615”. So, 0.4615” squared – 0.0025” = 0.2105”. Now, taking the
square root of 0.2105” = 0.4588”; only 0.0002” difference from the 1 hr
measurement, which is better than my measuring ability.

By the way, you might be thinking to yourself that the factors and math
may work fine to convert aged measurements to the 1 hr data, but how
can you be sure the 1 hr measurements accurately reflect the chamber
and bore dimensions? I had the same concern and verified several
chamber and bore dimensions using soft lead slugs. The Cerrosafe
measurements, taken at approximately 1 hr after the casts were made,
were “right on” within my measuring ability. I also used impact
impressions (discussed below) to measure chamber lengths and
compared the data to measurements taken from Cerrosafe casts.
The data agreed in all cases.

Advantages & Disadvantages

So what are the advantages and disadvantages to using Cerrosafe?
One advantage is the relative hardness of the cast. It’s not as easily
damaged when taking measurements as is an impact impression. If the
cast is sufficiently long to include a short section of the lands, it will
provide dimensional data of the throat and bore, but the same benefit
applies to the impact impression. Also, a Cerrosafe cast provides
diameter data along the entire chamber, including the center and rear
portion of the chamber; data which is not available from an impact
impression. For most shooters this data is not particularly important so
I don’t consider this much of an advantage, if any.

Disadvantages include: handling concerns & hazards, dealing with
expansion characteristics, having to partially or fully disassembling the
action to pour and remove the cast, and not being able to directly
measure case overall length (OAL). The latter two are the main
reasons I prefer an impact impression."

Blaser Straight Pull Bolt and Radial Locking System

What is the problem?
Blaser cannot be sure that in some cases in the past, suppliers have delivered pins made of regular steel instead of the ordered rust and acid-resistant steel pins for the trigger units. If these pins corrode, the correct function of the trigger is no longer guaranteed. It may happen that the trigger, having been pulled, does not return to its starting position. When the rifle is cocked and insofar ready to fire, an involuntary discharge of the rifle may occur. To avoid this risk, every R93 trigger unit has to be checked.

R93 Non Stainless Steel Pin Recall

What is the Problem?
The R93 trigger assembly uses stainless steel pins for corrosion resistance. We have learned that a small number of non-stainless steel pins were inadvertently used in some R93's. Note: the UIT, CISM, and LRS/LRS2 are not affected by this recall.

What could happen?
An accidental discharge from the off safe position may occur if an R93 with non-stainless steel pins is used and the pins have corroded due to moisture. In this situation, once the firing pin has been cocked (into the off-safe position), the rifle may discharge.

The DEVA report on the Austrian accident has been posted at WAFFEN-online, go to "Diskussions-Forum", then "Jagd", thread "deva report zu r 93...".

A Blaser R93 in .300 Win.Mag. burst on the shooting range, after several shots with reloads. Parts of the lock were propelled rearward, causing serious injury below the eye of the shooter.

The reloaded ammo was tested at the Vienna proof house, and showed on average only a slight over-pressure (ca. 100 bar above the max. of 4300 bar, proof loads are 5590 bar).
The case causing the accident showed primer perforation and complete head separation in (to my opinion) untypical fashion: ca. one half of the separation occured directly at the bottom (or the belt) of the case, this of course caused significant gas escape to the rear.
The reloaded cases were not examined for any further flaws, like metal defects, or stretching due to improper headspace. It is also not mentioned, how often these cases were reloaded.

The destroyed R93 had a lock guide or rail system ("Verschlussführung") made of plastic.
DEVA attempted to simulate the accident with a similar rifle. The ammo used for this test was well inside max. pressure, but was prepared for case ruptures:
- primer perforation: no effect
- annealing: no effect
- a ring cut above the case bottom: still no effect, as the remaining case wall above the bottom still sealed the gas
- drilling a small hole in the case bottom, to direct gases backward: lock was instantly destroyed, lock parts were propelled backwards.

Conclusion: in case of gas escape the R93 with plastic lock rails is unsafe. Owners of such rifles should have replaced these parts by aluminum parts.

In a second test a R93 with such alu parts was used. Here the lock system held, no gas escape with cases prepared as above. Only when pressure was increased the almost 8000 bar, the barrel burst, leaving the lock intact.

The DEVA report did not include any further speculations on the possibility of similar accidents with the alu lock rail system (this is obviously standard since several years).
However it is stated that the R93 straight-pull lock has no back-up system to prevent bolt blow-back, in case of a gas escape or mechanical lock failure.

The accidents occurred only with the R93 rifle and were presumably due to faulty ammunition (reloads). This can happen with any rifle. No blow up accidents have been reported with the Blaser Tactical 2 or R8.

Blaser Tactical 2 (LRS 2, R93, R8) Loads

Blaser R8 Configuration:

I currently own a Blaser Tactical 2 rifle. I am in the process of buying a Blaser R8 Professional rifle with synthetic stock, configured similar to Warnock's rifle.

Given the match barrel has a diameter of 22mm, a standard R8 Professional stock (uses standard 17mm barrel) or semi weight R8 Professional stock (uses semi weight 19mm barrel) needs to be sent back to Blaser USA to widen the barrel channel to accept a match barrel, free of charge. The match barrel will not fit in the standard and semi weight stocks without this modification by Blaser. A rep at Blaser USA reassured me that the procedure is routine and looks flawless.

This will allow me to share 308 Winchester and 300 Winchester Magnum ammunition and reloading supplies between the two rifles (Blaser Tactical 2 and R8 rifles) which have the similar chamber and match barrel specifications.

I currently own a Blaser Tactical 2 rifle. I am in the process of buying a Blaser R8 Professional rifle with synthetic stock, configured similar to Harnock's rifle.

Given the match barrel has a diameter of 22mm, a standard or semi weight R8 Professional stock needs to be sent back to Blaser USA to widen the barrel channel to accept a match barrel, free of charge. The match barrel will not fit in the standard and semi weight stocks without this modification by Blaser. A rep at Blaser USA reassured me that the procedure is routine and looks flawless.

This will allow me to share 308 Winchester and 300 Winchester Magnum ammunition and reloading supplies between the two rifles which have the same chamber and match barrel specifications.

I have had the stock inlet to accept match grade barrels 22mm on my R8 Professional. My Blaser rep did it and it looks like it was done with skill. I have the kick-stop also. I plan on configuring the R8 to be more of a "precision" setup. I'm getting parts as I type this.

I had a few in my possession for about three years, in .308, .300, and .338. Long range rifle shooting is way out of my area of expertise, but I can tell you what little I know:
The bolt is ridiculously fast once you learn to use it properly.
The safety is goofy and takes a bit of getting used to.
Accuracy is outstanding ... We did a test at Yuma Proving Ground, a professional shooter put 5 shots into a 4" circle at 1,000m in a 5-15 mph variable crosswind. There were many witnesses, most of them from the military sniper community. It was pretty impressive. Gun was a stock LRS-2 .338.
There are a lot of bits and pieces that make snagging other pieces of kit, branches, etc. too easy. The gun would definitely benefit from a redesigned stock.
You can change barrels or calibers very easily. I believe the current configuration stock allows you to have either .223, .308, .300 or .308, .300, .338 depending on which variant you choose. The optic is attached directly to the barrel and, in my experience, provides adequate repeatability that I could never tell that the barrel had been off the gun, even after multiple iterations.
The muzzle brake is a farce on the .308, it's not needed and it just makes the gun bigger and louder. On the .338 it helps ... a number of folks I shot with agreed that the .338-with-brake felt almost identical to the .308-without-brake.
Because of the design, you can switch the gun from being right-handed to left-handed in, literally, five seconds. This assumes you pay the exorbitant price for a second bolt, of course.
A folding stock version was nearing the end of development as of the time I left SIG (Sep'07).
The monopod in the butt eliminated the need for sandbags or other fine tuning aids ... a little twist of the leg and the run would rise or fall until you were perfectly on target.
Magazine capacity wasn't particularly good compared to many competitors.
There was a recall about two years ago, some foreign soldier picked his off-safe rifle up from the trigger guard and discovered (to his extreme dissatisfaction) that you could trip the trigger without touching the shoe. So SIG got all the rifles back and added a little plate to the top of the trigger guard preventing that in the future.
The LRS-2 was disallowed in the FBI sniper rifle trials because it has an injection molded stock. Even though the rifle has survived many extremely grueling durability and stress tests, FBI rejected it because their spec said "no injection molded stocks."

"I own a Blaser LSR2 (Looks exactly like a Tactical II but slightly smaller frame). I also have .223, 22-250, 6.5x55 and .308 barrels for the LRS2 chassis and have run several thousand rounds through this "system" (its a system not a rifle). I also own an AI and other match/tactical rifles (GAP), Bighorn and will try to provide some comparison and contrast.

The Good:
1. Accuracy - The Blaser is with out a doubt the most accurate rifle(s) I own. All calibers shoot 1/4 MOA or better. It shoots all kinds of ammo consistently better than the other rifles that I own. In other words, I can get all of my other rifles to shoot great but they are more sensitive to the bullet/load combination than the Blaser.

2. Cold bore shot - Some how the Blaser folks have figured out how get a single shot from a cold bore to go into the exact same place every time (this is also true of the light contour sporter barrels used for hunting). Critical where have you have only one shot to place. This is not true some of the other tactical/match guns I own.

3. Take down - the rifle breaks down in 30 seconds and packs into a 30" soft case or an A4 hard case. Assembly takes about 30 - 60 seconds and ALWAYS returns to zero.

4. Caliber change - you can run any of the Blaser R93 barrels in the chassis (the sporter barrels look a little silly) but of the fluted tactical barrels there are .222, .223, .22-250, 6mm BR, .243, 6.5x55, 6.5x284, .308 and .300 WM to choose from. (Note the Tactical II is a slightly larger frame and will accommodate only .223. .308 .300WM .338 LM Tactical II Barrels).

5. Convertible - you can change from a left or right handed action which takes about 15 seconds to change. (Slide one out slide the opposite handed action in)

6. Adjustable Stock - great feeling prone stock.

7. Straight pull bolt. Manipulating the bolt is very fast and almost approaches the rate of accurate aimed fire you can get out of a semi-auto.

8. Its a System not a Rifle - The Blaser is more of a "system" than a rifle and you can change L/R actions, boltheads and drop your tactical scope/barrel setups into a sporter stock for hunting. In the hunting configuration the rifle weighs about 8-9 lbs and is perfectly balanced. This system has a high "fiddle factor" for those of you that like to fool around with changing your guns.

9. Decocker safety. You can keep a round in the chamber and there is no way to fire the gun with the safety on as it de-cocks the firing pin spring. This is useful when hunting/stalking as some professional hunters will not allow you to stalk with a round in the chamber. (Note: this does make taking the safety off (cocking the spring) rather stiff but not for the studly folks that visit SH.)

The Bad:
1. Cost - these Rifles are expensive ($4,000 for the gun?, $1,600 for a barrel? $380 for a scope mount? $200 for a mag?). However the price is not unlike what you see companies like Dessert Tactical charging for barrels or Sako charging for a mag or bi-pod. If you buy into Blaser, you buy in with the notion that you are going to get multiple calibers and sporter stocks to amortize the cost. (Note: because all of the Blaser parts are interchangeable there is a healthy used market for buying used bolts, barrels at substantial savings. I paid $2,200 for my rifle, $800 for the .223 and so on ...

2. Magazines - As shown on the video there are issues with the magazines. Smaller calibers can and do have feeding problems.

3. The stock - The gun is not as sturdy as a McMillan or AI setup and can feel flimsy compared to the others. That being said, I don't recommend it if you are going to jump from a helicopter or C-17 with it strapped to your back. Otherwise it will hold up to all of the paper punching, match shooting, hunting you would like to do with it, unless of course the tactical matches start including an airdrop as part of the course.

4. Straight pull bolt - You can have missfires if you don't push the bolt forward and lock it with authority. There is a case where you can push the bolt lightly forward where it appears locked but is not locked. In this condition the gun will drop the firing pin when you pull the trigger and as the bolt is not locked, all you are rewarded with is a is a "Click". You then have to shove the bolt forward all the way and then pull the trigger a second time. This is really irritating but something that you only do 2 or 3 times. LoneWolfUSMC did a great job of cycling the bolt in the video so this did not show up. Had he just flicked it forward with a couple of fingers he might have stumbled onto this issue. Everyone soon learns to cycle the bolt with gusto.

All this said, the Blaser LRS2 is the tactical gun that I shoot the most. It is the gun that my kids and guests want to shoot more than any other (using the .223 barrel of course). It is the goto gun when there is an offending prairie dog on the premises (My record hit on a prairie dog is 623 yards with the Blaser LRS and the .22-250 barrel). I put in the .223 barrel and practice shooting for F-Class at 200 yards using a 600 yard reduced target. Then I stick the 6.5x55 barrel in for the match. It is the most fun gun of them all to shoot ... "

"I was very glad to have found this discussion on the Blaser Tactical 2 in 338 Lapua.

This rifle showed up just after the 2009 shot show. After playing with it at the show I made the [decision] to purchase one in 338 Lapua.

My scope of choice was the NightForce 8 * 32 *56.

While working up loads for the Rifle I discovered the 338 likes heavy Bullets at long Ranges. I am shooting the 300gr Sierra HPBT with nice results at 1000 yards.

While I am not a fan of using a Bipod especially the S model at this range it does work but not consistently.

100 yard groups are .40 MOA and they stay that way all the way out to 575. with the 250 Gr Bullet.

Past this range I find I need the heavier 300 Gr Bullet to keep me within under 1 MOA grouping.

The Barrel does tend to loosen up after 50 shots so make sure you keep the tightening tool around. After all it is designed for you to take it apart.

The stock and all it's adjustment really does spoil you. But there is a negative in 338 lapua the gun is very light and recoil enough that you can't watch your bullet impact down range.

Trigger pull according to the Lyman gauge is set for 2.2 lbs and it breaks very clean."

Today, I reviewed the Sig Sauer Blaser Tactical 2 precision rifle. The Tactical 2 is the most advanced version of the precision rifle developed by the German fire arms manufacturer designed specifically for the tactical community. The Tactical 2 rifle is a German take down sniper rifle used specifically by German and Dutch police forces as well as the Australian military and special police units. Over the past several years, it has increasingly grown in popularity with U.S. spec ops community.

Each design element was driven by the requirement to create the best shooting platform possible. Exceptional accuracy was one of the key principles during development, with effective engagement ranges of 1500 meters or more, depending on the caliber and ammunition. These rifles are designed to fire small groups (sub 0.25 MOA) with factory match ammunition. Advanced engineering and uncompromising quality are evident in every facet of design. The Tactical 2 is a bolt action rifle featuring Blaser’s revolutionary straight-pull action. When the bolt is closed, the 360 degree radial collet expands into the locking groove in the barrel - the bolt head is auto-centering and self-headspacing. The straight pull action features no rotating parts and assures rapid reloading with minimum movement. These actions allow for faster follow-up shots compared to traditional turn bolt actions.

Barrels are cold hammer forged, fluted and plasma-nitrided to provide maximum resistance against corrosion and abrasion. A Picatinny rail is affixed directly to the barrel, ensuring full compatibility with any optical sighting system. The design allows the barrel and optics to be removed as a fixed unit from the body of the rifle by simply unscrewing two hex bolts, accessed from under the body. Allowing the rifle to be taken down and carried in a compact fashion while keeping the optics and zero true to the barrel. The rifle can be disassembled or reassembled easily in less than 20 seconds.

The Tactical 2 is available in .223 Remington, .308 Winchester, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum. It has a larger action and barrel to accommodate the use of the .338 Lapua Magnum chambering.

The safety catch is mounted on the rear of the bolt and reveals a large red dot when pushed forward and up to the "fire" position. The magazines sit flush with the underside of the body when inserted. Calibers can be easily interchanged by replacing the barrel and bolt head, in under a minute, without any special tools and no change in accuracy. The rifle can easily be converted for left or right hand shooters.

The rifle incorporates all of the necessary features, and includes some of the latest features which are nice to have like the adjustable stock and cheek rest. Other additions like the SAK muzzle-break (a must have if you don't intend to shoot suppressed or just want to intimidate others while shooting), and additional detachable magazines. All reports from the field indicate that this is a superb performing tactical rifle.

I purchased my Tactical 2 last year chambered in .300 Win Mag and recently picked up a .338 Lapua barrel. I added a Night Force NXS 8-32x56 illuminated tactical scope with DNZ Freedom Reaper mounts and Butler Creek flip-up covers and a Killflash ARD. I had originally installed the SAK muzzle break, but later replaced it with a Gemteck Quickmount for my Quicksand Titanium suppressor. This is by far the most accurate rifle in my collection. I am easily capable of 1.25” groups at 500 yards and 2" at 800 yards. I recently had the opportunity to use it during a game of sniper golf. And I can honestly say that this is a very impressive weapon. I'm really looking forward to pushing it out past the 1k mark.

TAC-2 Reports For Duty

Although the Blaser TAC-2 is new to service with U.S. law enforcement agencies, it has already built a solid reputation with German SEKs (Spezialeinsatzkommandos). Snipers with these German S.W.A.T. teams have found the TAC-2 precise and highly ergonomic. Recently, the appreciation of the TAC-2 has begun to grow among U.S. LE agencies with one of its first adoptions by the New Jersey State Police TEAMS (Tactical, Emergency, and Mission Specialist).

NJSP TRIO
There are three full-time TEAMS within the New Jersey State Police:
North (Troop A based in Passaic Country), Central (Troop B based in Mercer County) and South (Troop C based in Atlantic Country).

The unit was originally created in 1978 and has an array of missions including S.W.A.T., rescues including those requiring advanced rappelling skills, underwater search and recovery and counter-terrorism operations. TEAMS is trained for assaults from helicopter, sea or land. During 2008, TEAMS carried out more than 100 dive missions, 350 high-risk search warrants, and 300 other tactical operations. TEAMS is commanded by a Lieutenant with each regional unit commanded by a Sergeant First Class.

Prior to the adoption of the Blaser TAC-2, the primary issue weapon for the NJ State Police has been the Sig Sauer P228. Members of TEAMS, however, are armed with the .45 ACP Sig Sauer P220 loaded with 230-grain Speer Gold Dot JHP ammo. Their current sniping rifle is the Blaser TAC-2 in .308.

NJ Rhyme & Reason: Optics used are a Leupold MK 4 LR/T 3.5-10x40mm with an illuminated reticle. Standard load is the Federal Match 168-grain BTHP. The rifle was ordered with the bipod and monopod and spare magazines have been ordered for the rifles. I understand that TEAMS has recently ordered rails for the TAC-2 so that night vision optics may be installed ahead of the Leupold scopes.

Various factors influenced TEAMS to choose the Blaser TAC-2. The speed and smoothness of operation of the straight-pull bolt allows snipers to fire quick follow-up shots if needed. The detachable box magazine allows them quickly to switch the bolt for right- or left-handed shooters, so TEAMS can assign snipers regardless of their primary shooting hand.

The ability to adjust the stock of the TAC-2 accommodates snipers of various sizes. All of these factors were important, but perhaps most important is that the TAC-2 proved to superbly accurate. From what my sources tell me, TEAMS snipers are extremely satisfied with the Blaser TAC-2s.

This bipod attaches via a 5 inch picatinny rail. For the Blaser Tactical 2, you can use (2) Atlas AFAR rails in a row or use a longer 5 to 6 inch picatinny rail.
You can for example use the 6" Yankee Hill Picatinny Rail in combination with the Atlas AFAR Rail kit square rail nuts and screws to attach this larger rail to the Blaser Tactical 2 rail.

Custom Barrels by KDF

No one makes custom barrels for the Blaser R93 rifles, but KDF has a barrel maker who will bore out the rifling in factory barrels and cut new rifling to produce larger calibers. We have made a .340 Wby from a .300 Wby, and we recently bored out a .338 to produce the .411 KDF Magnum mentioned above. The .411, developed by KDF in the 1980's, pushes a 300 grain bullet at 2,850 fps. That's 50 fps faster than a .416 shooting the same weight bullet, and it can be made on standard weight, semi-weight or safari barrels. Mr. Koehne's R93 .411 KDF magnum rifle weighs just over 6 1/2 lbs. (It is equipped with a KDF muzzle brake.)

Always keep the barrel bedding clean. Excessive oil or grease between the barrel and receiver will impair the accuracy of the rifle.

Tighten both barrel attachment screws hand-tight with the Allen key (SW 4) every 50 firings to maintain consistent barrel attachment screw tension. A loose barrel will impair the accuracy of the rifle.

"Handloading theories may number in the hundreds, but the basics are pretty simple: buy good tools and good components and load up the best ammo you can. I've found that paying attention to the neck area of the case pays the greatest dividends. I outside neck turn my cases to make them more uniform and size my brass without an expander. I full-length size all my cases. Even slow-fire loads should chamber easily; besides, with the chamber dimensions necessary for reliable function in a highpower rifle, full-length sizing lets the round better center itself. Consider using a feeler gauge to set/measure adjustments to the neck turning tool.


"Of the four manufacturers you list here: PMA, Sinclair, 21st Century and K & M, K&M is the odd man out. K & M uses a .312" (5/16") shank while the other 3 use a .375" shank (major dia). PMA and 21st Century both offer the ability for their neck turners to accept the K&M mandrels though if you so choose.

The specs on the minor diameter are different as well. The K & M spec on the minor diameter is .001" under bullet diameter for turning mandrels and bullet diameter for the expanding mandrel. The PMA and Sinclair mandrels share the spec of .002" under bullet diameter for the turning mandrels and .001" under for the expander mandrels. I'm not sure what the specs are for the 21st Century mandrels.

"Unplug the machine, loosen the cutter head, and lower the "shell holder" so that the case makes firm contact with cutter blade. "But, like most reloaders, I had to tinker with a good thing so I then used a K&M PPC flash-hole deburring tool to uniform the flash holes. That was a mistake I think. The tool reams the .059" diameter flash holes to about .067"-.069". Lapua uses a special precision process to form the flash holes, and the flash hole diameters are very consistent. I think it is very difficult to ream them and achieve a consistency level equal to the factory flash hole. Moreover, increasing the flash hole diameter seems to have increased ES and SD. Headspace is, in purely technical terms, the difference between the chamber's length measured from the bolt face to the middle of its shoulder versus the length of case's base to the middle of its shoulder.

"Headspace" in the context of the rifle chambered for a rimless cartridge is actually the distance from the bolt face to the point in the chamber that is halfway up the shoulder. In the reloading context we often use the term to indicate how much clearance have we built into the brass case as compared to that distance. Simply stated, if the headspace measurement on a resized piece of brass is 0.002" less than the chamber headspace of the rifle in which it was fired, we often say the brass has 0.002" headspace. That's not a technically correct use of the term, but it will do for most reloading purposes.

Resized brass headspace should be between 0.001" to 0.002" less than the headspace of the fired case [in bolt rifles].

When setting up a Type-S sizing die, set the neck bushing into the die with the numbers facing down toward the body of the die. Tighten the de-capping assembly until it contacts the bushing and then back it off ¼ of a turn. This allows the bushing to free float in the die. You should be able to hear the bushing rattle if you shake the die. Having the bushing free floating self centers the neck, and again minimizes any run-out that can occur.

If you prefer other brands of sizing dies there are a few tricks that people use to minimize run-out as well. Many reloaders claim that the use of an O-ring at the base of the de-capping assembly lock nut will float the assembly and help self center during sizing. Another trick that has been used is to remove the retaining pin on the shell holder slot on the press ram, and use an O-ring in its place to hold the shell holder in place. This allows the shell holder to self center during sizing as well.

At Sinclair International, we are often asked for a fool-proof method to set up a full-length sizing die, and begin reloading our fired cases. The method used by many target shooters today is to set up your full length die to closely match your rifle chamber and minimally full-length size your cases –as little as .001″ for bolt-action rifles. I prefer to use this method for all of my bolt-action cartridges.

STEP ONE
I like to de-prime five (5) cases (de-prime only, do not full length resize) and measure from the base of the case to the shoulder with our Sinclair Comparator Body (09-1000) and Bump Gage Insert(09-10200). We refer to this as our headspace measurement. Our Electronic Caliper (#MIC-14) works well and may be pre-set at .000” making this headspace measurement easy to capture. The Sinclair Comparator/Gauge Body and Bump Gage Inserts make this task fairly simple. L.E. Wilson Tools & Gages, Hornady Manufacturing, and RCBS all make similar units to achieve your headspace measurement.

STEP TWO
With your full-length die threaded into your reloading press, loosen the lock ring and run the press ram up toward the full length die with a shell holder in place (with no case). Then, screw the die toward the shell holder until it stops. Back the die out of the press and away from the shell holder one full turn and set the lock ring finger tight.

STEP THREE
Lubricate each of the cases with your favorite sizing lube (my favorite is Imperial Sizing Die Wax) and resize a case. Again, take a headspace measurement from base to shoulder. [When running the case up into the die, be sure the press ram moves the full limit of its upward travel.] If there’s no change in the measurement from the fired dimension, loosen the die lock ring and turn the full length sizing die downward 1/8 of a turn. [Editor's Note: You'll need to use smaller turn amounts as you get close to the desired amount of bump. We suggest moving just a few degrees of die rotation at a time once you've reached the point where the die hits the shoulder without moving it back.] Now repeat the sizing process with a second lubricated case and take the measurement again. Keep rotating the die downward gradually (in small increments) and repeat the case sizing process until you see approx-imately .001”-.002” reduction to your fired headspace measurement. We prefer a headspace reduction of approximately .001″ – .002″ for bolt action rifles and .003″ – .005″ for semi-auto rifles. You can adjust to your rifle as to what works best. Don’t forget to load 10 rounds or so and try them from the rifle’s magazine to make sure they function properly.

Dwell time is often used in metal forming machines at the end of stroke to give the metal time to completely conform to shape. How much it helps brass in a reloading die I don't know, but there are situations where it does. Just from my experience if I size 10 cases really fast then size 10 pausing a second or two, the ones that were paused will measure correctly and some of the others will measure like they weren't pushed back enough.

I do not apply any lube to the shoulder area and do agree that the "dwell time" helps consistency. I do not have the body/FL die screwed tight down in the press but have small marks on the die set ring and then on the top of the press that I make with a felt tip marker. I hold onto the die with my fingers during the sizing process so it stays lined up with my marks. That way if a piece of brass comes out a little short of .002, I can adjust a little to add a thou. If it comes out with bump more that .002, I simply mark it and use it as a sighter this cycle. I use a Stony Point Head N Shoulders set to measure set back.

I use a Stoney Point gauge, but this is how an old timer I knew did it without a gauge.

1. Put the Shell Holder in the press and raise the ram.

2. Screw the Full Length(FL) Die into the press so it is about a "nickle's thickness" above the Shell Holder.

3. Lube a "Fired" case (walls and inside the neck) and squash it.

4. Remove the Lube and try closing the bolt on it in the chamber.

5. If the bolt closes with no resistance, screw the FL Die into the press about 1/8-1/4 turn and repeat steps 3 & 4.

6. As you feel the resistance begin, slow down how much you screw the FL Die into the press so you are at about 1/16 of a turn, or "Fine Tuning". At some point you will not be able to close the bolt and you are extremely close to having the FL Die in the proper position.

NOTE: The reason for this is because the FL Die has begun Resizing the Case-walls down to the Pressure Ring. As it does so, the Case-body lengthens slightly which in turn moves the Case-shoulder slightly forward. Then as the "Fine Tuning" continues the Case-shoulder makes contact with the FL Die and is moved slightly reward(or slightly shortens the Case-head to Case-shoulder dimension).

7. Stop when there is a slight bit of resistance when closing the bolt on the empty case. You now have a "slight crush fit" for the case in that specific chamber, or Zero Headspace.

8. Once you get it where you want it, take some masking tape or a black marker and put a Witness Mark where the FL Die Lock Ring is positioned to hold the FL Die in this position. Loosen the FL Die and return the Lock Ring to align with the Witness Mark and sung up the Set-Screw.

Screw the FL Die back into the press and try squashing another case. It should have the same resistance as the previous one. If not, you need to re-adjust the Lock Ring so it does. But you are extremely close to where you want it, so make very small changes at this point.

One thing I do to ensure I'm bumping consistent is during my sizing process. When I run a case into the sizer die, I let the ram lock(Forster) in for 2-3 seconds. This will ensure the case makes full contact inside the die. [This is known as "Dwell Time"]

If your using a bolt gun, you can remove the firing pin assembly, and then when you chamber a round you'll be able to feel exactly how much pressure it will take to chamber the sized case.
Keep screwing the die into the press, and trying it in the chamber until you can just barely feel the case in the chamber when you close the bolt. If the bolt falls all the way down you have pushed the shoulder in to much, and you'll need to back of the die a little until you can feel the case in the chamber..
I like the bolt to fall part way down, and then use a tiny bit of pressure to finish closing it.
Once the die is set you really don't need to change anything after that...

Given the cost of the O ring, why not just give one a try? I think that you may not understand that just because lock rings can be tightened solidly against the press, that that may not be necessary or even desirable. After all, it is the threads that take the load of sizing, and the adjustment of the die within them that sets the shoulder bump. As long as the die does not rotate, the setting will remain constant. The O ring provides enough friction between the bottom of the lock ring, and the top of the press to keep the die from rotating even when the lock ring is only tightened enough to slightly compress the O ring. Tests have demonstrated that this sort of "float" can improve the straightness of sized cases, although there are larger issues that need to be addressed if this aspect of reloading is to be optimized. I have switched the lock ring that came with the FL die that I use for my 6PPC for one of the Lee units that has a built in O ring, and have seen a slight improvement in the concentricity of my sized cases, although they were pretty good to start with.

"Headspace gauges are used to check one aspect of a firearm’s suitability for use. If the headspace is less than minimum, factory loaded cartridges may not fully chamber in the firearm, the action may not close fully, and it may not fire. If the gun does fire, you could have excess pressure problems, and in the case of semi-automatic arms, possible serious damage to the locking system. It’s possible, with autoloading guns, to have slam fires due to insufficient headspace. If headspace exceeds the maximum limit, excessive case stretching can occur, even to the point of a case rupture or head separation from the case body. Other problems associated with excessive headspace are: failure to fire, misfires, poor accuracy, and very short case life. The sudden “dumping” of powder gases into the action can wreck an action or stock, and in the case of many rifles, send powder gases back along a bolt body to blast the shooter’s face. For this reason, eye protection when shooting is a must!

The most common usage of headspace gauges is with bottleneck cartridges in bolt action rifles. As with any job, check the chamber and magazine to be certain the rifle is not loaded. Remove the bolt from the action, and strip the bolt as far as practical. This means remove the firing pin assembly and, if possible, the extractor. If the bolt has a spring- loaded plunger in the bolt head as an ejector, remove the ejector. Clean the chamber, the bolt locking lug recesses in the action, the bolt face, locking lugs and the gauge. With some types of bolts, the extractor can’t be removed without damage to it or its retainer. For many years, Remington centerfire rifles have used a rivet to retain the extractor. Do not remove the extractor on Remington rifles.

Open and close the stripped bolt on an empty chamber several times to get a feel for the amount of resistance the bolt has to closing. Slip the GO gauge into the chamber and with the pressure of only one finger, attempt to close the bolt. If you are working with a Remington rifle, or any rifle where the extractor cannot be readily removed, slip the rim of the gauge under the extractor on the bolt, and push the bolt and gauge forward to chamber the gauge. Attempt to close the bolt handle. IMPORTANT: If you feel any resistance to closing greater than you had with the chamber empty, stop right there. Don’t force the bolt closed. The bolt handle gives you a tremendous amount of leverage, so to avoid damage to the gauge or rifle, use only minimal pressure to close the bolt. If the bolt closes with no feel to the handle with a GO gauge in the chamber, open the bolt, remove the GO gauge, and replace it with a NO-GO gauge. Again, gently attempt to close the bolt. The bolt handle should stop or show resistance to closing at some point before it fully closes. DO NOT force the bolt handle closed. Even if the bolt handle closes 98% before you feel resistance, the headspace is normally considered to be within specs.

If the bolt handle closes fully on the NO-GO gauge, repeat the test with a FIELD gauge. If the bolt does not close completely with this gauge, the headspace is on the long side, but the rifle can usually still be used with factory ammo, if the cases will not be reloaded and there are no other problems present. Never fire a gun that closes on a FIELD gauge. If it is fired, the chances are extremely high that you will get case ruptures."

One way to tell your cartridges are fully fire formed is increased resistance to bolt opening. This won't always be true for ALL the cartridges. Mark the cartridges that show resistance to opening and set your bump accordingly on those cartridges. Lock-in your die setting, the rest of the cartridges will soon catch up. Keep your press handle all the way down for a few extra seconds this will help the shoulder take a more uniform "set" to desired length. For me this works a little better than waiting for ALL the cartridges to exhibit the same amount of resistance to bolt opening.

"When we bump shoulders(usually in the range of .0005 to .002), the case body IS supported . The issue with sizing the case far enough down has a lot to do with the "coverage" of the chamber, vs. that of the functional part of the interior of the die. If there is a line at the bottom of the case that is just inside of the chamber that the die cannot reach, and the die is such a close match to the chamber that it barely reduces the diameter of the body of the case, there will be problems if hot loads are used. One of the things that can contribute to this is how dies are commonly chamfered at their bottom opening. Anything that is done here, beyond just breaking the corner, and smoothing it, reduces the die's coverage. The problem is that like all machined parts, there are tolerances for the depth that chambers are reamed to as well as the same thing for dies. For many, the easiest way to resolve these issues, which can work very well, is to simply remove some metal from the top of the shell holder. Just because you find this solution inelegant, is irrelevant, it has worked very well for a lot of benchrest shooters, to solve a problem with the least amount of effort, and no negative consequences. We can measure sized cases, and how they fit in their chambers, by a combination of comparing measurements before and after sizing, and the feel as they are chambered."

"First of all did you survey the "headspace of all the fired cases that you sized? Secondly, it has been my observation that cases to not reach their maximum "headspace" with only one firing. I suggest that you do another test with some new brass of the same type, and the same die. Number each case with a permanent marker, and make a chart, showing the unfired, and fired "headspace" of each case. If your cases got tighter after sighting the shoulder probably moved forward during sizing, because it was short of full chamber potential and then got squeezed by the die, but the die was not low enough to locate the shoulder during the process. Personally, I do not like headspace comparitors that have inserts cut to shoulder angles, much preferring something designed to make line contact around the shoulder, such as the Stoney Point, now Hornady design. If your shoulder was telescoped slightly by sizing that did not fully move it back and determine its angle, it may have ended up at a slightly different angle than the insert. What I like to do is to fire a single case, neck sizing only, with relatively hot loads, until its datum to head dimension ("headspace") does not increase. At that point, I record the datum to head dimension for that rifle, and set bump in reference to that dimension. Most of the time, when I have to work with once fired brass, I set the die so that the shoulders are where they came out of the chamber when fired, and since they will vary, I check several, try the longest in the rifle, and if it is not tight, use that dimension."

Making sure that the bullet is seated to the same depth each time, and time is taken to ensure that true aligned seating can make the load.”

Bob Blaine: “I agree with Rod. I strongly feel that consistent bullet seating depth is the most important step in creating the most accurate hand loads. I have seen the results in both my bench and long range rifles. Taking the time to ensure exactness in the seating process is by far, the number one most important step in my book.”

AccurateShooter.com: Agreed. When loading match ammo, after bullet seating, we check every loaded round for base of case to ogive length. If it varies by more than 3 thousandths, that round is segregated or we attempt to re-seat the bullet. We measure base of case to bullet ogive with a comparator mounted on one jaw of our calipers. You may have to pre-sort your bullets to hold the case-base to ogive measurement (of loaded rounds) within .003″.

One problem that the reloader faces with longer bullets is that they are so long that the standard seating stem is not machined deep enough to contact these bullets properly. The point of the bullet “bottoms out” in the stem and the result is off-center seating and/or rings and dents on the bullet nose. If you plan on using such bullets, you should purchase a “VLD” style seating stem, which is cut to accommodate the longer bullets. The use of this stem results in truer seating of the bullet without leaving a ring or marring the tip of the bullet.

Finally another trick used by many in the seating process is to turn the case while the bullet is being seated. Some people claim this will keep things straight. What they do is raise the ram in increments while seating and rotate the case in the shellholder in increments of 90 degrees from the original starting while the bullet is being seated.

"So now you know the dimension from your bolt face to where your bullet touches the rifling using your bullets and gauge. Now all you have to do is adjust your seating die so that it makes ammo that matches this dimension. At this dimension you are “touching the rifling”. It is from this starting point that you can tune your rifle very effectively. Whatever amount you make this dimension longer than this starting measurement is a jam. If the starting dimension was 2.110” and you change it to 2.120” you are using a .010” jam. If you change your dimension to 2.090” you are using a .020” jump (as an example).

The key to this situation is that you find which CBTO shoots best in your rifle using your bullets and your gauge. It will take a bit of effort to get this sorted out especially if you haven’t done it before but I can assure you that once you know and control this dimension accurately you will be able to obtain better performance from your load in your rifle. It is important to remember that you can’t ignore COAL especially if you want to feed through a magazine. However, if you know your CBTO and then find out your COAL is 0.050″ too long to feed through a magazine then you are equipped to decide what to do next. If you must feed through the magazine then you will know for sure that you will have to add 0.050” more jump (make the CBTO 0.050” shorter) to get the cartridge into your magazine. This may or may not affect the rifles performance but at least you will have hard and reliable data from which to make decisions."

If you want the best of both use a Wilson type inline seater and seat the bullets a little long and finish seating the bullet to your desired OAL with a Forster Ultra seater in a 7/8" press. The Wilson type inline die can't be beat as far as concentricy but doesn't seat to the same OAL as well as a Forester Ultra seater (in my experience) but using the Ultra seater as the last step you ensure that you get good concentricy with the Wilson seater by doing most of the job seating the bullet and the Ultra Seater will ensure the same OAL. This goes against my K.I.S.S. method of reloading match ammo but it works.

After the Rounds Are Loaded — Batch Sorting by Concentricity Levels
No matter how meticulous you are, and no matter how good your components and tools are, run-out will still show up. Reloaders can drive themselves crazy trying to make each and every loaded round a true “0” in run-out. You will still see some minimal amount no matter what you do. Set yourself a standard of maximum allowable run-out for your loads. For instance for my Long Range 600- and 1000-yard F-Class loads I like to see .002” or less. I average .0015” and see a few in the range up to .004”. I spin each loaded round on my Sinclair Concentricity Gauge and sort them by run-out. Those that run over .002” I use for sighters or practice. Though achieving zero run-out (on every round) isn’t possible, minimizing run-out can definitely help your performance. Not only will your loads shoot better but you will have one less thing to worry about when you are lining up the sights on the target. — Pete Petros

Why should you use our Boron Nitride Bullet Coating Kit (David Tubb)?

Boron Nitride coated bullets offer several distinct advantages over bare or moly coated bullets
(from Tubb's site http://www.davidtubb.com/bn-boron-coating ):

Tubb Precision Blended [Editor:likely a blend of 70 nm and 5 micron particles] Hexagonal Boron Nitride goes on clear and doesn't come off in your hands, and unlike Moly coating, does not need a wax coating to hold it in place;

Unlike Moly, Boron Nitride has no humidity issues;

Moly out-gasses at around 600 degrees, Boron Nitride out-gasses above 2500 degrees;

Boron Nitride has a lower coefficient of friction than Moly, so it is slicker than Moly;

But the biggest reason to use Boron Nitride on your bullets, the most important advantage Boron Nitride coated bullets have over bare and Moly coated bullets, is that the first shot from a cold, "dirty" barrel will go into the group (of all the subsequent shots). You can't say this about Moly coated bullets, and in David's experience, the first shots using Moly coatings usually go low, and bare bullets are unpredictable.

Boron Nitride coating radically reduces the elevation effects of cold (or hot) bore first shot velocity variations that have plagued shooters in the past. This means that the High Power competitor using Boron Nitride coated bullets will not have to worry about elevation changes from the first through successive shots. It means that the hunter taking that all-important first shot of the day can be confident it will go where it is aimed. And the tactical shooter will know that critical first shot will leave the barrel in the same velocity range and go into the same group as his subsequent shots.

By Tumbling/Vibratory bowl coating (from http://www.lowerfriction.com/howto.php )

Take 5-6 small empty plastic bottles (empty aspirin bottles will do). Put few parts in the bottle and fill the bottle (up to 75%) with coating powder. Fill all bottles likewise.
Put the bottles in vibratory bowl/tumbler with vibratory media.
Vibrate/Tumble for 4-5 hours.
Empty the bottles and wipe clean the parts with soft tissue/cloth.

Speed and friction determine how effectively the material bonds to the part. The greater the speed and the pressure of application, the greater the bond.

Correct Method is:

Fill all bottles likewise. Put the bottles in vibratory bowl/tumbler with sand, vibratory media or with the bottles wedged.. Vibrate/Tumble for 4-5 hours. Empty the bottles (you can reuse WS2) and wipe clean the parts with soft tissue/cloth.

After three hours, the Thumler's Tumbler is very hard on meplats.
Look at the info for using the Frankfort Arsenal vibrator/tumbler with .177 steel BBs and plastic jars just up above this post. Its all there and works perfectly.

All of the benefits of moly: Reduced fouling, reduced barrel wear, reduced barrel heating -- in general the ability to shoot longer before accuracy degrades, and spend less time cleaning when you're done.
Little of the drawbacks of moly: Supposedly doesn't really build up in the barrel, so you don't have to condition a barrel to just hBN bullets, and you can interchange shooting with uncoated bullets without thorough cleaning in between. Also since it's not a disulfide there's no risk of it forming acids that might attack the barrel if not thoroughly removed.

Update... Loaded up a batch and went out to shoot.
The accuracy node definitely moved up. I suppose due to the lower friction creating slightly different harmonics. The node velocity may be the same, didn't take the chrono to verify.
Noticed that I did not see the bolt just start to get sticky until 26.5 gr (H4895) and this previously occurred at 26.1 gr.
Barrel ran cooler.
Boresnake with no brushes left the bore spotless.
I like the stuff.

This is how I understand the process after a few PM's to zfk55.
1. First start by washing new BB's in Dawn soap and dry over night.
2. Fill jar (I use peanut butter jars also) 1/4 full w/ new BB's and add 1.5 grains hBN and tumble for 3 hours.
3. Wash bullets in Dawn soap (I did this at the same time as the BB's) and dry over night
4. Add 50-100 bullets to the BB's, jar should be about 1/2 full (I'm doing 6mm107SMK) and add .5 grains hBN for 50 and about .75 grains hBN for 100 and tumble for 3 hours
5. Remove bullets from jars, separate from BB's and roll back and forth in a terry cloth towel.
I'm using a Frankford tumbler with the jars tightly packed with foam and the bullet coating results look great. I haven't coated the barrel or loaded any bullets yet, winter doesn't want to leave MN yet and I got 100 rounds to fire from last year. Hope this helps.

19zip, I do a hBN and alcohol slurry. I mix it to the consistency of whole milk. I keep a small jar completely air tight and it lasts on the shelf without evaporation. I apply it with a slightly undersized mop like a .270 in the 30 caliber bore. I fire one round within an hour or so.
You've about got it right, Scott. The projectile should not appear mottled, but a solid, darker color and they'll feel very slick when handling them. If your coated projectiles are leaving any trace of copper in the bore then there's a part of your process not working.

Background

VLD bullets are designed with a secant ogive. This ogive shape allows bullets to be more efficient in flight (retain more velocity = less drop and wind deflection). While this result is desirable for many rifle shooters the secant ogive on the VLD bullets produces another result in many rifle. It can be difficult to get the VLD to group well (poor accuracy).

For years we encouraged shooters to use a base of cartridge to end of bearing surface OAL (I will use the term COAL to represent this dimension) which allows the VLD to touch the rifling or to be jammed in the rifling. This provided excellent results for many shooters but there were others who did not achieve top performance with the VLD jammed in their rifling. These shooters were left with the belief that the VLD bullets just won’t shoot in their rifle.

Other groups of shooters were discouraged by our recommendation to touch the rifling. Some of these shooters knew that at some point during a target competition they will be asked to remove a live round. With the bullet jammed in the rifling there was a good chance the bullet will stick in the barrel which could result in an action full of powder. This is hard on a shooter during a match.

Yet another group of shooters who were discouraged by our recommendation to touch the rifling are those who feed through magazines or have long throats. Magazine length rounds loaded with VLDs could not touch the lands in most rifles (this is the specific reason that for years we said VLD bullets do not work well in a magazine). When a rifle could be single fed but was chambered with a long throat a loaded round that was as long as possible still would not touch the rifling.

Until recently, shooters who suffered from these realities were believed to be unable to achieve success with VLD bullets. Admittedly, we would receive the occasional report that a rifle shot very well when jumping the VLD bullets but we discounted these reports as anomalies. It was not until the VLD became very popular as a game hunting bullet that we were then able to learn the truth about getting the VLD bullets to shoot well in a large majority of rifles.

After we proved that the Berger VLD bullets are consistently and exceptionally capable of putting game down quickly we started promoting the VLD to hunters. We were nervous at first as we believe the VLD needed to be in the rifling to shoot well and we also knew that most hunters use a magazine and SAMMI chambers. Our ears were wide open as the feedback was received. It was surprising to hear that most shooters described precision results by saying “this is the best my rifle has ever shot.”

We scratched our heads about this for awhile until we started getting feedback from hunters who were competition shooters as well. Many were the same guys who were telling us for years that the VLDs shoot great when jumped. Since a much larger number of shooters were using the VLD bullets with a jump we started comparing all the feedback and have discovered the common characteristics in successful reports which gave us the information needed to get VLD working in your rifle. We were able to relay these characteristics to several shooters who were struggling with VLD bullets. Each shooter reported success after applying our recommendation.


Getting the Best Precision and Accuracy from VLD bullets in Your Rifle

Solution

The following has been verified by numerous shooters in many rifles using bullets of different calibers and weights. It is consistent for all VLD bullets. What has been discovered is that VLD bullets shoot best when loaded to a COAL that puts the bullet in a “sweet spot”. This sweet spot is a band .030 to .040 wide and is located {centered} anywhere between jamming the bullets into the lands and .150 jump off the lands.

Note: When discussing jam and jump I am referring to the distance from the area of the bearing surface that engages the rifling and the rifling itself. There are many products that allow you to measure these critical dimensions. Some are better than others. I won’t be going into the methods of measuring jam and jump. If you are not familiar with this aspect of reloading it is critically important that you understand this concept before you attempt this test.

Many reloaders feel (and I tend to agree) that meaningful COAL adjustments are .002 to .005. Every once in a while I might adjust the COAL by .010 but this seems like I am moving the bullet the length of a football field. The only way a shooter will be able to benefit from this situation is to let go of this opinion that more than .010 change is too much (me included).

Trying to find the COAL that puts you in the sweet spot by moving .002 to .010 will take so long the barrel may be worn out by the time you sort it out if you don’t give up first. Since the sweet spot is .030 to .040 wide we recommend that you conduct the following test to find your rifles VLD sweet spot.

Load 24 rounds at the following COAL if you are a target competition shooter who does not worry about jamming a bullet:

.010 into (touching) the lands (jam) 6 rounds
.040 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
.080 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
.120 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds

Load 24 rounds at the following COAL if you are a hunter (pulling a bullet out of the case with your rifling while in the field can be a hunt ending event which must be avoided) or a competition shooter who worries about pulling a bullet during a match:

.010 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
.050 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
.090 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
.130 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds

Shoot 2 (separate) 3 shot groups in fair conditions to see how they group. The remarkable reality of this test is that one of these 4 COALs will outperform the other three by a considerable margin. Once you know which one of these 4 COAL shoots best then you can tweak the COAL towards or away from the lands .002 or .005. Taking the time to set this test up will pay off when you find that your rifle is capable of shooting the VLD bullets very well (even at 100 yards).

"The MOAR was meant to be an improved MOA reticle variant for field/tactical use. The NP-R1 has always been our number one selling reticle but there have been common complaints from guys that use them in the field/tactical role that it was toooo thin.
It is a very fine reticle.

We doubled the line thickness on the MOAR. We took it from .0625 MOA(1/16MOA) to .125(1/8MOA).

We gave it 1MOA graduations on both the vertical and horizontal as well as added numbers for quick reference. We gave it a 2MOA crosshair inside of a 4MOA acquisition box to remove some clutter and aide in rapid target engagement. The hash marks on the horizontal also do not intersect as to provide a clean look.

The NP-R1 was a total floating reticle. The MOAR ties to the edges of the FOV and thick arrow tipped shaded boxes help draw your eye to the center.

The MOAR reticle is much more visible in shadows and low light conditions, as well as against darker colored targets.
The entire smart portion illuminates.

While we say we thickened it up, it is still very thin in comparison to other reticles available on the market, but thick enough to make a distinct difference."

All of them rotate—and in the process move in and out, changing the position of the eyepiece lenses in relation to the riflescope’s reticle. The reticle is the crosshair, or aiming point and the eyepiece’s primary role is to keep the reticle focused for the individual shooter’s eye.

So, to focus the reticle, point the scope toward the sky or another distant, light colored background. (If the scope is mounted on a firearm, ensure that the firearm is empty and rendered safe before performing this operation.) If the reticle is not crisp when you first glance through it, glance away, and turn the ocular lens about ¼ to ½ of a turn in either direction and glance through it again. The reticle will appear to be either more or less focused at this point. If it appears more crisp, turn a quarter turn the same direction and glance through it again. If it is less crisp, rotate a full turn the opposite direction and check again. Repeat this process until the reticle is crisp and sharp. If the eyepiece has a locking mechanism, lock it in place at this setting.

It is important to note that the reticle should not be focused while looking through the scope constantly. Your eye will compensate for the focus changes and focus will be very difficult to achieve. It is also important to note that the eyepiece focuses the reticle ONLY—not the target. Use the adjustable objective or side focus to remove parallax on the target (on higher magnification scopes). On lower magnification scopes, the parallax is factory set at 150 yards for most riflescopes, and shorter distances for other specialized products. (Rimfire scopes are set at 60 yards, for example.)

Q: Whats the best technique for shooting a .308 from bipod? Does Free Recoil ever work?
Froggy: Free recoil will not produce the desired result with a .308. I tried that more than a couple of times. No dice. My technique works for me. But I won’t argue with the way Tony Boyer shoots a 6PPC.
And don’t even think of shooting free recoil off a bipod. It just doesn’t work because you don’t want those legs bouncing backwards out of control.
When shooting with a bipod it is essential that the bipod be adjusted properly for elevation and cant. The bipod must be of good quality. I like Harris swivel bipods with notched legs. When the bipod is set up properly, and if you push slightly forward with the rifle to firm up the ‘pod’s legs, excellent results can be realized with lots of practice.

l see bipod legs that have the cant locked down too tight. You should be able to move your rifle and adjust for cant with slight pressure, but when you remove your pressure, the gun should stay exactly where you left it for cant. Too many people apply pressure to adjust for level and then hold that pressure because the cant tension adjustment is too tight. This can cause you to completely miss the target at range. We want to be a Ransom Rest for the rifle system to perform off of. We want to remove ourselves from the shot as much as possible.

While we are on the topic of bipods, let’s talk about loading bipods for shooting. l teach that to have the best chance of recreating consistency, load the bipods. Some go too far and even end up breaking them. If you are shooting at close range and want to load your bipod into straps on your shooting mat or a steady, rigid object in front of your rifle, this is fine, as it will allow for better recoil management and give you the ability to watch your own impact. Therefore, you’ll be able to adjust quickly in a second-shot correction method. Seeing your own bullet impact is a huge benefit.

However, there are a lot of problems that can occur from this technique when you get out to range. Remember that consistency behind the gun is everything to consistent results. We can’t always have the same surface for our bipod legs and may not be able to get the same amount of loading. This may be manageable and not create problems in the short-distance shots. The benefit of extra recoil management may be worth the deviation you may see at short ranges. When we talk long range, the amount of pressure on the bipod legs from shot to shot can greatly increase your group size. Therefore, what l teach is to load the bipod legs with your shoulder to the point that the bipod legs start to roll forward. Then we hold the pressure we have and take the shot. This allows for the shot-to-shot consistency that is required for accuracy at long range.

We ran into some Stan Chen Asym 175 308 ammo at Cabelas. The first 5 shots, 100 yards, 700ish feet MSL, 90 degrees. Wind Zero. Can cover with a dime. See attached pic.

Yes, this is the adapter for the Blaser Tactical 2 to attach the Atlas Bipod.

TTR, I also have Steyr SSG 08 .338 Lapua Magnum, Steyr SSG 04 .300 Win Mag, and McMillan TAC-50 Rifles that I will work up loads for in the near future.

The adapter may have to be modified to fit the Blaser Tactical 2 if the adapter is the older version as described in the post below. The most current version fits perfectly.

I just checked the Atlas Bipod BT28 AFAR Kit on my Blaser Tactical 2. I was unable to get the 2 small square rail nuts to slide into the rail. They are too thick. The base thickness of the rail nut is .090" on my older version BT28 rail kit, which is too thick for the rail. The width of the square nuts are otherwise to spec. I will call Accu-Shot to see if the have any recommendations. One option is to grind down the rail nut with a Dremel device. Sorry for the error. Please stand by.

Well....I went and ordered this today, so........dremmel it is! No worries. I am a self-rescue kind of guy. If it's just a matter of taking a few thousands off, no sweat. I even have a grinding wheel that might make it better. I appreciate the pics and the follow up.

Modifying the Atlas Bipod AFAR BT28 Kit to fit the Blaser Tactical 2 Rail:

I used a Dremel device with the following kit I bought at Lowes.

This is the grinder stone I used, included in the kit above.

Grind only the two sides of the rail nut farthest apart from each other. Grind the lip until the square rail nut fits the Blaser rail. This is approximately a little more than half of the original thickness of .090". This takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Here is the square rail nut now fitting correctly into the rail. The other adapter is the Harris Bipod Adapter No. 6.

Depending on the age of the AFAR kit, you may need to also grind down the length of the bolts to fit correctly on the rail in other rifles. The 2 short bolts work perfectly in the Tactical 2. Older kits may have slightly different sized nuts and bolts. The kit comes with 2 pairs of screws, 2 long and 2 short (two each 10-32 x 1/2 and 10-32 x 3/8 flat head screws using 1/8" allen wrench). Otherwise, the modification is relatively simple and worth it to use the Atlas Bipod. Fortunately, this modification is not necessary with the new updated AFAR BT28 adapter.

Is the barrel twist 1/11 as on my Tac 2?

What kind of groups are you getting?

My LRS2 308 barrel has 1 in 11 twist,
47g varget Load was used with Molly 185g VLDs,
shot at 66 degrees Fahrenheit,
190ft above sea level.
Hot load, would recommend working up from 45g etc.

Group size was clover leave sized groups at 100y
Performs very well out to 800y.

Here are some measurements of the rail nut base "lip":
.0635" Harris Bipod Adapter No. 6 (works great in the Tactical 2)
.090" BT28 AFAR (my old kit, too thick, needs modification to fit)
.052" BT28 AFAR (new kit, should work fine with the Tactical 2)

Your new set should work without modification. Let me know how it works.

Update 9/19/2013:
My two square rail nuts just came in from B&T Industries (Atlas/AccuShot). The base lip measures .054 to .055 with my calipers. They are good to go. The fit perfectly in the Tactical 2 rail. No modifications necessary. If you have the older version, I would recommend contacting B&T Industries (Atlas/AccuShot) for replacement rail nuts.

That's great news. I just found this thread a couple days ago when I searched for "Blaser atlas bipod". I ordered the AFAR kit yesterday and should be here on Monday. I'll let you know if it has the new T nuts.

In the meantime I modified a short Magpul rail section from their MOE handguard kit. I modified the oval nuts it comes with similar to how you did. It works ok but I don't like the idea of using the plastic rail section. No sign of it flexing or anything so far, but I will feel better with the metal rail in the AFAR kit.

I like the Atlas bipod so much more than the Harris I had on it. I could never properly load the harris on a bench or concrete slab. It would just slide forward. This Atlas stays put.

P.S. those 150gr loads my daughter is shooting in the video at 500 meters were made for my SIG 716. I had a batch made with LC brass that I didn't bump the shoulder back far enough on and they kept getting jammed in my 716's chamber. The Blaser ate them fine but they were a tight fit. That's why you see her hitting the bolt handle like that to get it locked. Good shooting for a windy day, but she over corrected for the wind on that last shot.

Here are some recent 175gr SMK 100 yard groups I shot while testing differnt seating depths from the Blaser from 2.800-2.284". They all did pretty well but 2.800-2.810" did about the best I think. That's good because I will still be able to use them in pretty much any mag fed 308 rifle. Powder was varget at 42.5gr. Brass was 2x fired PMC. Primers were CCI 200. The flyers are all my fault. I am a bit out of practice.

I'll be looking to try Berger 185 OTM target bullets next with some Lapua brass and CCI benchrest primers. Not sure if I am going to stay with Varget on these or try IMR 8208XBR. I am really liking that 8208.

Good news on the new T nuts fitting the Blaser rail. Mine is supposed to arrive on Monday. I have the bi-pod attached now with the Magpul rail I mounted. Seems OK, but I would rather have the metal rail. I am taking it as is to the range on Sunday. I'll let you know how it does. The Atlas looks great on the Blaser, and so far playing around with it at the house, I am thinking I am really going to like it. I have a long range shoot next weekend and hope the Atlas bi-pod and Blaser will be a winning combination for the shoot.

It's more of a get together shoot than a competition. The place has steel targets out to 1100 yards on one range and 900 on another with some shorter ranges that will be more for the carbines. I will be shooting my 175gr SMK loads for now since that is the best I have for it. I took all my 168gr SMK loads and re-purposed them for use in my SIG 716 which will also be coming along.

I only have the 308 barrel right now for the Blaser. I would like the .223 for it and maybe the .338 but the main range I shoot at doesn't allow .338 LM on it.
 
Well hot diggity! the mailman brought my AFAR kit today (Saturday) instead of Monday as the tracking estimated. Good thing too, because I was planning on getting together with a couple fellow long range shooters at our local range tomorrow. One of them was hoping to try out the Atlas bipod.

First I had to take off the temporary Magpul MOE rail I had modified to fit.

Here you can see the MOE rail on the forend. It is plastic and stands a little taller that the AFAR rail. The nuts I had to modify to fit also bent a bit from being tightened down. Probably wouldn't have held up good over time.

Here is the AFAR kit. All it took was a 1/8" allen wrnech (or bit in my case) to install it. They fit into the rail perfectly. It also came with 2 sets of screws. One longer pair than the other. I used the shorter set and it worked perfect.

Here is the AFAR rail on the fore end. It sits lower against the gun than the MOE rail did, and best of all it's metal.

Have you had a chance to try out VV N150 and N550 with 185 gr Bergers? The Lapua reloading manual shows N550 as an accuracy load. Another member (Down South) who has a lot of experience with Power Pro 200-MR in competition is now favoring N150 with Berger 185 gr bullets. Although the load is slower, accuracy is reportedly excellent. The load is also easier on the brass. Thanks again for your post.

The Lapua reloading data for the 185 gr Scenar is probably close to the Berger 185 gr bullet.

Wow that last post I made sure took forever to get approved. I took my Blaser to the range on Sunday and tried out the atlas bipod. It was very easy to load on the wooden shootin bench and prone on the concrete slab. It even made it easier to keep a proper follow through and to spot my own hits out to 700 yards.
 
Since this has turned into my default Blaser info thread, I am looking for some bi-pod advice on an R8. I am debating between the Vektor Maskin plug for the R8, or just bolting on a rail to the R8 and attaching an Atlas Bi-pod.

Atlas says I need a BT15 rail (curved) and BT1517 screws.

Does anyone have any opinions on Versapod over the Atlas?

The appeal of the quick on/off of the Versa-Pod is nice, but I could just as easily get the QD option for the Atlas.

So it comes down to which is "better"? In particular with loading? I heard that some think the Versa-Pod is a little loosey / goosey.

Blaser R8 Bipod Options

Atlas Bipod

The "rubber" inlays in the Blaser R8 rifle may make placement of an Atlas Bipod adapter difficult, with a possible suboptimal cosmetic result. Take your time planning the installation. If you do go this route, please post your pictures on the installation.

Harris Bipod

Another option is placement of a Harris bipod adapter which a Blaser USA gunsmith does, I believe, free of charge. You can of course install it yourself as well.


The R8 is on the top (note the angled ridges at the bottom of the R8 stock interior). The R93 is on the bottom (flat bottom, no ridges).

Hi RXS0,

My N550 load with the Lapua 185g scenar silver jacket was 49g N550 which did yield good accuracy but doesnt seem as temp stable as the Varget load which i shoot at moment, N160 is Exellent with the 90 and 105g weight bullets with my blaser 243 barrels.
