Found this on the local classifieds last night and picked it up today for $550. Remington 700 SPS Tactical. I'm sure you all know it's a 308. PO says it has approximately 100 rounds down the tube. The scope is a Millet 6-25x56 with MOA turrets. I'm not too sure on the glass. I'm pretty sure I will be upgrading it in the near future. I don't have any real experience with Millet glass. From what I understand, it's "just OK" but nothing to write home about. Anyway, suggestions on where to go from here would be great. Thanks everyone!!

My rifle started life in almost the exact same manor (but with a b&c a5 stock), however after 52 rounds my Millet LRS 6-25x50mm broke and had to be sent back. 6 1/2 months later (which was actually almost a year later since I was deployed at the time) I got a replacement which immediately went up for sale - this however was only my experience with Millet. My rifle since then has gone through a major remodel and had a lot of work done. Not really a Remington anymore.

As for glass, I absolutely love my Bushnell HDMR with the h58 reticle. Good glass, good price (especially used), and no need to dial. If your not into the Horus reticle a gen 2 mil dot would be nice to. Other wise don't worry to much about optics and just go shoot till your ready to really put a couple bucks into the rifle and do it all at once.

Restock that thing asap and shoot the hell outta it until you can outshoot the gun or its time to rebarrel then I would have it trued and a nice barrel put on. Until then work on the basics. The fundamentals will get you there when it comes to long range. Read and learn on here as the knowledge is endless.

What I did was scrap everything but the action and build from there. Although I did spend twice what you did from the get go... but now, I'm glad I did because I have something I appreciate and is my own.

Your imagination and wallet are your only boundaries.

I will definitely be getting lower rings when I get the new glass. That thing is WAY too high. I am thinking a Vortex Viper PST and a new stock to get me going. I think I should be able to do those two upgrades for under 2 grand.

Good deal if she shoots straight.
Those would be a great start. Will need a bipod eventually. Then get some match ammo and get out and start shooting. You'll know more of what else you'll after some time behind the rifle!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will definitely be looking into a new stock. I have some money saved up for this little project so I should be ok. And yes, my plan is to be much more accurate than a "stick"

I would look into the McRee's G5 TMAG Model 2 folding stock. The System is very well make and will save you money in the long run as well. With the McRee's system you don't have to get the action bedded or pay for bottom metal Inletting like on many other stocks.

The other cool thing about the McRee's is you can always drop in other barreled actions into that one stock.

Hows the trigger? Rings too high, barrel too short, for me. other than that, looks great!

I guess I missed the part on this forum where it says what you can and can't call your rifle. With all due respect, I'll call my rifle whatever the hell I want. If it offends you, then don't read it.

I missed it too! I'm glad the rifle name police set us straight.

And Dave B...Your signature quote. Hilarious!!

OP, I am following the same, um, trajectory (har har) as you. Got the same rifle, like new, in .308 for $550.

Got a new Badger one piece base, vortex low rings, swfa 12x42 glass, harris 6-9" with notched legs.

Next up: a new stock. The hogue stock sucks, and with the harris legs extended the stock touches the barrel, sigh. Just personal preference, so I settled on a Manners T3 w/ dbm mini-chassis.

Best of luck and I cant wait to see your progress!
