I know this topic is not a new one but, I really would appreciate some input!

My question is this, I have been shooting for about fifteen years both in and out of the Army and then Navy. I also shoot at my local ranges several times per month or more. I have become increasingly more interested in longer range shooting for fun (200-750 Meters+) I have several rifles but, the only one I used to shoot long range with was my Rem 700 AAC-SD in .308 Win. I just have the rifle to my brother because I was not in the mood to modify it and, he needed a rifle. The question I have is this, what .308 rifle can I buy under 2k that will be an upgrade from the 700 AAC-SD? I really did not like the sloppy, mushy stock that would touch the barrel easily if I used a bipod. I saw the Rem 700 tactical 5r with the 20" barrell. Is this a decent shooter or, a worthless upcharge? I have the new Nightforce 5-25x56 ATACR that I am keeping to put on my next rifle. I apologize if this topic is already beaten to death but, I just have read so much conflicting info that I really need some help deciding.

The 5R would serve you well, and I believe it is worth the extra $'s. I would also maybe look at a FNH PBR. I only say that because I used to have one, and it was a great shooter.

So, you got rid of the rifle because you couldn't be bothered with removing two screws and putting a new B&C stock on? ;>)

I had a 5R mil-spec (since customized). I liked the stock and the rifle itself was a VERY good shooter. Easily a solid 1/2 minute gun. It did not copper at all, the barrel cleaned very easily, almost as well as my two match grade barrels. My X Mark pro trigger worked very well, adjusted to about 3.5 lbs with a very clean break. Not all x marks are created equal.

You have set a very generous budget for a rifle. While I really liked my 5R and the savage LE offerings are excellent shooters, if I had your budget, I would look to the FN SPR A1 or A5. Excellent McMillan stock, excellent action, comes with a 20 MOA rail.

Why not buy a other 700 or see if you can find just an action somewhere? get it Trued and get a quality barrel on there. Ditch the stock for setting decent or even a chassis, slap the NF on there and call it a day

How is the FNAR? I have no experience with it and, it looks interesting.

The SSG3000 would be a very nice upgrade, however the "new ones" are still a bit unproven but come with very good lineage (the ones that came in Mcmillans were very hard to beat). At this time I would say go get a Tikka T-3 varmint and spend the rest on good optics and mounts. Then later upgrade to the KRG...

I really like my 5R. I'd like it a whole lot more if I was able to put more than 68 rounds down the tube. However, I also think buying a Tikka T3 is a good option. What's not to like about a sub-MOA, factory gun with DBM and side bolt release for $600. The Tikka's action is probably better off in adverse weather conditions rather than the Remington due to the smaller ejection port. Although I don't care for the stock, the TAC models use the same barrel as the TRG if you want to spend a little extra.
