Ok guys it sucks to be straped for cash, but one kid in collage and one girl at home allot to keep up. Here is my quest ion like the tital says have 600 may could go alittle more what scope to buy. Use gun for 400 to 600 slaping steel with friends. It is on a rem pss 308 in a aics stock.

Check with Chris at Sport optic he will get you the best deal and service on a Vortex . You will be happier if you move up to the Viper PST 4-16x50 sfp . Tell him your a Hide member and budget and he will find you the best deal .

Yeah I also would be looking at SS and Vortex for that price range.

My humble two cents....

I just got the Vortex PST 4x16x50 with illuminated reticle from Optics Planet for $699 which is close to your stated budget.
I haven't tested it yet since it arrived just last night, but my first impression is very positive. I also have a Leupold Mark IV
4x16x50 which I bought for almost twice the price of the Vortex last year. If this Vortex performs as it should, as far as repeatability etc, I won't be buying another Leupold.... The optics seemed to be very clear and the elevation/wind age knobs rotated with very positive clicks......Heck, I could have two vipers for the price of one Mark IV. Hopefully tomorrow I'll find out how well it does.

Please let us know what you think after you check it out tomorrow. Go ahead make up my mind for me. Thanks

I vote, use what you have already for just a little longer and getting a used G2DMR 3.5-21. I don't regret either one of mine, one of which I paid on for 5 months through George at GA Precision. I then traded into a second one and would do it all over again if someone stole them. You can start a want to buy thread or talk to some of the optics vendors here for some really good deals. Liberty Optics, SWFA etc.

just went back and read my post and looks like a 3rd grader could spell better. sorry typed on my phone while in a treestand. what is G2DMR , is that a bushnell reticle. thanks

It's one of Bushnell's newer Elite Tactical line. Built like a tank, good glass, great turrets/tracking, G2 reticle that is great for long range hunting, competition and steel/paper. It's a great all around scope. They offer a cash back one year warranty if you don't like it. It's not the best scope made but I like it for the money and I wouldn't trade it for a more expensive scope that didn't have the G2 reticle. George Gardner of GA Precision designed the reticle and it has a good track record in competitions. It has a good magnification range and has worked well in low light hunting situations for me. The reticle design and layout is great to me, doesn't get too confusing, works great with a small dope card and helps me for shooting out to 600 easily without dialing, in most conditions without having to hold out into space. The reticle branches out like a Christmas tree as it goes down and helps for holding wind while using clear hash marks for holdovers.

The red numbers you see are only in the Strelok app not the scope.

The scope is FFP so your holdovers/mils stay the same no matter what magnification you have the scope on. The grey numbers are there in the reticle and represent mils. The blue and pink information is also from the app

Never heard of or bought from them so no help there. That isn't the exact scope I'm talking about but it does have the reticle I like. I have heard good things about them but I don't really like 6x to be my lowest mag setting mainly because I hunt. Even though the picture looks like that scope is illuminated it is not. None of the G2 reticle scopes are, you can get it in mil dot though.

Scott Berrish at Liberty Optics and Brady at SWFA are both members/vendors here and are highly recommended to deal with. Contact them before you buy to see what they offer the scopes for. The one I use and have been recommending is the 3.5-21 G2DMR and it has a 34mm main tube. It's definitely not the only good scope out there for the money but it is the one I use and can highly recommend.

The 6-24's are nice as well. They don't have as nice of eye box as the DMR but they are still a very nice scope.

Well, I went to the range today and tried the new Vortex I just purchased. it's now mounted on a Rem 700 Varmint on an AICS chassis. After I mounted and torqued the scope, I sighted it in at 100. The lense was very clear. I can't really tell any difference between this scope and my Leupold mark IV. I had both scopes side by side...but then again, I'm not an expert and my 51 year old eyes are not 20 anymore. After I fired several shots and found the center of the target, I turned the elevation turret 1 mill. After I fired, I checked the bullet hole with the cross hairs and the bullet hole was exactly at 1 mill on the crosshairs. Then I turned the turret to 2 mills, and again the whole matched perfectly 2 mills on my crosshairs. Then, I turned it back to zero and fired. I hit the center of the target again. Each click was very positive with no wiggling as I turned the turret back and forth.
I tried this same thing several more times with several different elevations and every time I was able to hit the dead center of the target when I went back to zero. I'm sure there are better methods to check how repeatable a scope is, but I was honestly satisfied with the results I got today. Last night, I went outside and played with the illuminated reticle. It was very clear with all magnifications and the crosshairs mill numbers were not blurry and easy to read.
Honestly, my next scope will be another Vortex. I really liked it. I know this was not a very scientific review of the scope but I think I covered the basics.
Good luck with your new scope whatever you decide to get. The important thing is to go out there, make some noise, punch some holes, and have a great time!!!
Cheers!!!!

I also suggest considering the Weaver Tactical Scopes. In my opinion the quality of their glass is better than Vortex.

Me too. I have both the weaver and vortex (pst's 4-16 and 6-24) and I like the weaver better.

Man from what I have read the 10x or 12x SWFA scopes for $300 are HARD TO BEAT!! I have the upper end SWFA SS 5-20x50 and plan to outfit at least one if not two SPS Tacticals for the rest of the family and these will be my choice. Two scopes for $600....that are proven time and time again.

The glass on the super sniper (fixed) sucks. Its a 10+ year old design.

In that range you are limited with features. Bump up to 1K and there are much better options (Bushnell ET line).

Actually, I like the 'glass' (meaning the optical quality due to coatings) on the 10x and 12x Super Snipers better than that of the HD model.

I had an older SS 10x Side focus on a FN SPR years ago, and was not impressed. Tracked well and was robust.....Just was not in love with the glass. Then again I was shooting IOR glass on my other guns so that may have spoiled me.

First person I have heard put it that way.

Ive put it that way several times. For a functional scope the SS is great, but the glass quality sucks. Still in the 300 dollar price range its hard to find that much travel, and tracking so dealing with the glass is not nessessarly a deal breaker, but I always get a laugh with I read about the SS having "great glass" or "clear as a bell" etc

Lots of folks rave about them.....Just what I have seen. I mean were talking a $300 dollar scope. For those that have shot through Walmart Bushnells and Tascos they prolly are clean as a bell. You cant look through S&B stuff and expect a 3 bill scope to be anything close to it. I have never looked through one. I can say my SS 5-20 is a nice piece of work.

It's funny how people rate glass. I'm positive there are way more people who own $300-$500 scopes who shoot out to 300 yards max, as there aren't 1000 yard ranges on every corner. You simply don't need high end, high resolution glass to shoot the 100-200 yards ranges that 90% of people practice at. Image quality to me is great, as long as tracking and adjustment range needs are met first. The glass in the SS for most guys is good enough, with excellent tracking, adjustments and durability. The $700+ saved is better put towards ammo, instruction, and practice until pressing further out there.... IMO
