He was a big and supporter of our community and many others like it. He was the only author outside Stephen Hunter to go and spend time on the range, and he loved it.
He was also one to do his homework, not rely on the internet, and meet those in the shooting community, and it translated into fantastic books and movies. He was a huge supporter of the CIA and other clandestine agencies, very rare in the media, to say the least.
We have lost a friend....

Just heard this , sad news. I liked his books and even video games he lent his name to.

I pretty much read all of his books during exercises or deployments during my active duty years; just a thick paperback in the cargo pocket a few pages at a time. So many great stories, but the only one I read multiple times was "Executive Orders" and probably because of the novels that built up such a solid foundation to that epic story were so solid and epic in their own right.

A lot of Clancy's recent stuff was co-authored with other writers, not up to the standards of his early classics from the 80's and 90's IMHO.
Saw an interview with him awhile back where he was asked why he wrote military thrillers. He said "because the military has the best toys".

A great author and some exciting reads for those who have not ventured down this path. Those big old hardback's - Patriot Games and Rainbow Six are looking down on me now from the bookshelf. May break one out again for a read. RIP TC!
I've read his books, a few times each. Just simply, enjoyable escape literature of an interesting context. This author really could 'take you there' if it was of interest to you. Without Remorse is still one of my favorites, and would definitely like to see an ACCURATE movie made of it. (for the most part, anyways)
Tom Clancy will definitely be missed, but he'll never be forgotten. He is the first author that I've collected all his works in, in hardcover. Only the Jack Ryan line though. Op-Center and whatnot were just not the same style. His books will continue, un-ending.

My favorite book of all time.
I've got Red Rabbit, The Bear and the Dragon, The Hunt for Red October, and The Sum of all Fears looking at me right now. Need to finish or just restart Red Rabbit after I get caught up on John Le Carre. I also spent an embarrassing amount of time on the Spinter Cell video game franchise. I'd normally not admit that, but must be caught up in the emotion of the moment. I'll just say the world has lost another fantastic writer and researcher.
Rainbow Six was awesome, I have been reading him since I was a teenager. Between him and Flynn it has been a tough year, two of my favorites. I always thought "Without Remorse" where John Clark just whups up on the bastards with improvised pipe shotguns and suppressed .22 was his best one and would make a great movie if done right.
