Pretty new here been reading a lot. I have found some new pvs-4's on ebay listed as having gen3 tubes and having prefectly clear views. The seller said after I inquired that his supplier said they were 10160 tubes from a pvs-7. My research shows that to be a 18mm tube. And it if it's a pinnacle does that mean it's really a goggle tube and not very shock resistant. I am a good technician with business machine experience and have a mill and lathe. My guess is this is a modification and wiring change to get this 18mm tube in the pvs-4 25mm housing, anybody up to speed on this?

Ok the seller came back and changed the tube number. Now he says it's the MX-11620 thats already been discussed here.

PVS-4 use 25mm tubes. Tubes from PVS-7 (18mm) will not work for the PVS-4.

You've used PVS-4's? If you haven't, you may not like it. Lots of them have a funky reticle and some are even sideways (that may be the TVS?). I used one twelve years ago on a SAW and it was one heavy son of a bitch too (as well as being outdated gear). I just wanted to try it out. With the gen. 2 tube (I'm guessing it was gen. 2) I could see better than not having it, but it wasn't that great either and I was in ideal conditions --summer at Ft. Benning, clear skies. I'd rather have had a set of 14's and a PEQ2A at the time (which I did go to later and still use to this day).

I guess if you get one real cheap and just want one, it may not be a bad idea. But those clip ons are much, much nicer. Smaller and lighter too. Costly, but worth it. And for most work, a laser and head mounted NOD's are just a better way to go, IMO. But I'll be saving for a clip on myself, likely a thermal model though for a .50BMG.

But yeah, if you want the PVS4 there's a few guys that are PVS-4 and TVS-5 aficionados; starting by PM'ing that one guy may be a good start. If you search for it, there was a thread a while back with lots of info on both of those. Also, call TNVC --they know their shit and can probably help you out too. Great guys, and they won't try and sell you on anything. But if you do buy anything, I highly recommend them. They've really gone above and beyond to help me, and their CS was way above and beyond --they're the only guys I deal with regarding night vision now.

I have a post on the forums that basically show you most of the reticles you can expect to see on either of the PVS four or TVS five platforms.

Basically, it's a reticle to be found for the platform I got a hold of it and try it out.

The PVS – four is the rifle mounted unit and the TVS – five is the 50 caliber machine gun or forward observer type version.

There are still current technical documents for using the TVS – five unit with a 50 caliber machine gun but all of those are based off of third generation technology.

The PVS – four has a 95 mm objective lens, and the TVS five has 155 mm objective lens. So it's pretty obvious that the larger of the two units will be able to collect more light and actually be able to see better regardless of whether it's GEN two or a GEN three unit.

I have had both GEN two and GEN three versions of the units and eventually got rid of them for more current equipment that way to an awful lot less.

It's difficult to compare a PAS- 29 with a PVS 14 to any of these units because we're comparing ounces overall too many many pounds... And helmet mounted at that.

Of course, we're also talking $11000 vs ~$3000.

I'll tell you flat out that you probably want a GEN three PVS four if that's the direction you're going to go.

The problem is that those older units tend to be very expensive and reality also is that TNVC and mod armory or any of those guys can probably find you something in the $5000 price range that will: number one have a current warranty and number two: probably be better for what you need.

Yeah I used Siri order to actually dictate this message...

Thanks for the replys guys. I forgot to mention that I have a as new pvs-4 with the battery adapter, mount, and changed to the crosshair reticle, I would like to try the gen 3 tube. I don't think I would want the tvs-5 lens as it is so big, maybe for a monocular. I argee this older stuff is heavy but I can only afford this older stuff and most of my hunting is done from a rest. I do have a pulsar n750 with a doubler and it is useable. When I get the funds I will probably just get the ps-22 and use my good scopes with it. All I am interested in doing is eleminating some hogs and yotes out to about 120 yds. and hopefully most will be closer.

Added later, after more studying it will take a lot of justifying to get anything that cost 5k to kill hogs with at my age.
