    GENESEO, Illinois (August 29, 2013) — Springfield Armory® launched a voluntary safety recall to upgrade 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and 3.3 XD-S™ .45ACP pistols with new components, which eliminate the possibility of a potentially dangerous condition.
    Owners of XD-S™ 3.3 9mm and .45ACP pistols are instructed to stop using their pistol and carefully unload it; then visit www.springfieldrecall.comand follow the instructions to begin the upgrade process. Springfield will cover the cost of the shipping and upgrades.
    This Safety Recall applies only to:


    Springfield 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm pistols - serial numbers between XS900000 and XS938700.
    Springfield 3.3 XD-S™ .45ACP pistols - serial numbers between XS500000 and XS686300.


    The company announced that, under exceptionally rare circumstances, some 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and .45ACP caliber pistols could experience an unintended discharge during the loading process when the slide is released, or could experience a double-fire when the trigger is pulled once. Springfield said the chance of these conditions existing is exceptionally rare, but if they happen, serious injury or death could occur.


    “Springfield apologizes for this inconvenience,” said Dennis Reese, co-chairman of Springfield, headquartered in Geneseo, Illinois. “Our customers’ safety is our paramount concern; we want to emphasize that no injuries have been reported to date." Springfield is in the process of notifying customers, distributors and dealers.
     
    What's the fix? striker replacement/striker spring replacement? Any issues with the rest of the XDM line?
     
    LL doesn't work for Springfield, this was just a public service announcement. Although he may know those answers you should probably contact Springfield if you have a pistol within the numbers listed

    My XDM is 9MM 5.25 and I have seen light striker hits on chambered unfired rounds. Has anyone else noticed this with their XDMs?

    Have run a couple thousand rounds through mine without any problems until this last weekend (local USPSA comp), but I believe it was due to me loading the bullets too far out. But there was still never any light primer strikes.

    Yeah.....mine slam fired and left a nice hole through my temperpedic mattress and into the wood floor. This was six month ago and they dealt with it very poorly. I'm not too happy about the situation. I've got three daughters, 6,4, and 9 months. Fortunately they were not in the room.
     
    Oddly enough, my 9 year old XD40 started doing the same thing lately! Release the slide, and when it goes forward, the firing pin drops, no finger on the trigger!
     
    Sent mine in today, I haven't experienced any issues like this and have really started to like this little .45. I've got about 500 down the pipe now.
     
    How did you send it it? In the case with no box? Or just the pistol in a box?

    I just used a small box and wrapped the gun in some bubble rap and then and old towel, place the fed ex label that ya print out on top and taped completely over it. No need to send in your box that came with it. Also be sure to unload and don't send them any magazines either.
     
    I just sent mine in as well, haven't had any of these issues to date, but I'm not waiting til they do. The web site Springfield Armory ReCall Registration explains the process well. You can ship your whole factory case (I would remove all accessories etc) or like the previous I just wrapped the gun less magazine in bubble wrap and one of their medium boxes, using left over bubble wrap as padding. It all went pretty smooth.

    I remember seeing several threads about this on XD Talk over the last few years. People always swear up and down that it's not possible because all of the safeties would have to fail... and now there's a recall for it. I will say my XD9 I got in the beginning of 2008 I put well over 10K rounds through without a single malfunction, that's still pretty low for a pistol but it never missed a beat.
     
    I know I probably should but I hate to send in my XDS .45. I got it when tbey 1st came out & after approximately 620rds & 0 issues I'm just wondering if I should. I'm sure the answer is yes but w/my luck it will come back w/other issues I haven't previously experienced.

    A range bud sent his in 3-1/2 weeks ago w/nothing so far as return time from Springfield when he called last week.
     
    From the little bit that I've heard about it, you will only have issues if you let off of the grip safety before the trigger resets while the action is cycling..... Or some sort of weird shit like that. It would be hard to do on purpose, much less on accident. I wouldn't send one back until they would guarantee a quick turn around.

    Not quite. I think they put that out because it sounds better honestly. I could be wrong though. Mine slam fired just from dropping the slide.
     
    Where did you hear about the free extended mag? IN the few emails I have received from SA I dont remember reading about a free mag.

    The email I got from Springfield yesterday. OOPS, (link to website in email) came from their website.

    When upgrades are finished on individual firearms, customers will receive a shipping notice and tracking information at the e-mail address they provided for the XD-S™ recall. And as a token of our appreciation for our customers' patience and support, we will also be enclosing an XD-S™ extended magazine with X-tension sleeve with each pistol we return.

    I'd like the free mag, but I'm still torn on sending back a pistol that in 650+ rounds has had zero issue.

    I've tried to get mine to do the slam fire deal by holding the back strap safety & dropping the slide release. It didn't, I've never had a minutes problem & I'm scared to send it back honestly. I'd be pissed if it came back w/issues.

    I'll wait it out a little longer & see what happens I guess.
     
    I had a gun with 650 rounds through it with no issues at all. But after that point in time (at just over 1000 rounds) I have received one of the double fires. Pissed me off cause it ended up costing me a few points! Thanks for posting this Lowlight as this is how I ended up finding out about it.
     
    In my opinion the safety risk is too great to not stop carrying it and send it in. My XDs 45 never misfired but if you pulled out a chambered round you could see light primer strikes. I am not willing to hope it won't go off while chambering a round at home, regardless of pointing it in a "safe direction". Also the double firing makes me wary of bullets going high and wide of your intended target if you are unprepared for the second misfire. I was annoyed at Springfield for taking my gun, quoting a turnaround without having a fix designed yet, but I still would have stopped operating the handgun til I was able to have the issue resolved.
     
    Received mine back today. Came back with a 7 rd. mag for inconvenience. I went out back and put 25 rds. thru it with no FTF or FTE. The trigger is a noticeably different though. Before I sent it back it broke like a 5.5# Glock trigger but was just a little heavier, probably 7 #s or so but crisp. With the modification it feels a little heavier and the break is mushy now...sucks. Before as it came off of reset, the trigger was very crisp now there is a very noticeable spongy creep before the break. I know it's not a target pistol but I liked the old trigger better. Guess I will have to live with it unless I go the PRP route.
     
    Unfortunately I already installed the Powder River spring set lol. My understanding is that most of them will be replaced with factory springs. Took my a few hours to install that kit too!
     
    My son had installed a PRP kit in his also which felt really nice when shooting. He put it back to stock before sending his pistol in for the recall. He is going to wait to hear from PRP about any compatibility issues before re-installing the kit on the updated XDs due to safety.
     
    So guess what I bought brand-new today at my brand-new gun store that just opened up two weeks ago. The XDS 45 ACP with A serial number that smack dab in the middle of the recall.
    I must admit I'm more upset with the retailer then with Springfield. If this recall came out in late August why was I sold a brand-new gun today that is in the recall numbers.

    Does it have a visible roll pin in the exposed section of the grip safety ? If so, it has been modified by SA.
     
    You can look on the recall website to see a picture of a fixed XDs. The roll pin should be in the grip safety that compresses by your palm.

    It is free to send it in they will have it for sometime... But it's worth it to send it unless you want to gamble an object in your house to be vapor on accident.

    I just got mine back on Friday I'm very pleased whit what I go back from Springfield.
     
    Does the retail gun store have any obligation to me given they sold me a gun with a known recall out there. ie do they owe me a loaner or something to accommodate me while I send it back?

    I have no idea if there is a statutory requirement to not sell you a firearm that is covered by a pending recall (to the best of my knowledge, firearms are not covered by the CPSC and so I don't believe that the shop is violating any laws), but it was pretty f'in' stupid, from a civil liability standpoint, for the retailer to sell you a product that the manufacturer itself has deemed to be defective. I'm thinking that the shop could be convinced that it is in their best interest to trade out a piece of defective merchandise, since their negligence could have some dramatic repercussions if the user were to experience a hazardous event by virtue of product defect that should have been known at the time of sale. If they are unwilling to accept that line of reasoning, then I would probably deal directly with the manufacturer on this issue and find another shop for future business transactions.

    I am absolutely not the litigious type. However there are many people out there who are. I have not yet discussed the situation with the retailer who by the way is new in town and who I very much support. They are a retailer as well as indoor gun range and from the looks of things they are state-of-the-art. I was so impressed that I joined the range is a long-term member. So I definitely want to see them succeed.
    I am calling the store today and speaking with the manager. I will ask for them to take back the gun and they can either send it back to Springfield for repair and perhaps put it on their rental counter for their indoor gun range. I would then expect a brand-new handgun to replace it that has been upgraded. I agree I think it would be in their best interest to do this. Of course it sounds like they are not obligated to do this. I will post the results.

    Yes, what this is in my case is gunk getting into the safety and firing pin. When I pushed down the safety (the stepped pin at the rear of the slide off to one side) it was crunchy. I aternatively ran it through the ultra-sonic cleaner and sprayed it out with Hornaday gun cleaner with a dry lubricant until the crunchiness was gone. Have not had a light primer strike since. FWIW, do not oil the firing pin or the safety as it will cause them to pick up dirt and cause this.
     
    I sent mine in mid-september and have not received a nitification it was comeing back yet. The extended mag would be nice as that makes it a 7+1, which is a little better for carry. Too bad the trigger is not as good. I guess I will find out when I get mine back.

    Im pleased with the revised trigger its very nice a little heavier but its a carry gun not a match gun over all I'm impressed with it.
     
    Update:
    My new retail store told me they were unaware of the recall until I told them about it.
    They are ordering me a new gun and will trade me for my old one which will go back to Springfield then to their rental range.
    Kudos to Barracks 616 of Grand Rapids Michigan.
    They didn't have to do this. I recommend anyone in that area support this kind of place.

    Good to hear yours took less than a month. It's not going to do me any good though. My Women Face said she is taking mine when it gets back so we can send hers in. I love her, but she is a pain. :)
